Most of the miniaturized electromagnetic vibrational energy harvesters (EVEHs) are based on oscillating proof mass suspended by several springs or a cantilever structure. Such structural feature limits the miniaturization of the device’s footprint. This paper presents an EVEH device based on a torsional vibrating magnet over a stack of flexible planar coils. The torsional movement of the magnet is enabled by microfabricated silicon torsional springs, which effectively reduce the footprint of the device. With a size of 1 cm × 1 cm × 1.08 cm, the proposed EVEH is capable of generating an open-circuit peak-to-peak voltage of 169 mV and a power of 6.9 μW, under a sinusoidal excitation of ±0.5 g (g = 9.8 m/s2) and frequency of 96 Hz. At elevated acceleration levels, the maximum peak-to-peak output voltage is 222 mV under the acceleration of 7 g (±3.5 g).

Existing piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting circuits require auxiliary power for the switch control module and are difficult to adapt to broadband piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters. This paper proposes a self-powered and low-power enhanced double synchronized switch harvesting (EDSSH) circuit. The proposed circuit consists of a low-power follow-up switch control circuit, reverse feedback blocking-up circuit, synchronous electric charge extraction circuit and buck-boost circuit. The EDSSH circuit can automatically adapt to the sinusoidal voltage signal with the frequency of 1 to 312.5 Hz that is output by the piezoelectric vibration energy harvester. The switch control circuit of the EDSSH circuit works intermittently for a very short time near the power extreme point and consumes a low amount of electric energy. The reverse feedback blocking-up circuit of the EDSSH circuit can keep the transmission efficiency at the optimal value. By using a charging capacitor of 1 mF, the charging efficiency of the proposed EDSSH circuit is 1.51 times that of the DSSH circuit.

Vibration energy harvester, which can convert mechanical energy to electrical energy so as to achieve self-powered micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), has received extensive attention. In order to improve the efficiency of vibration energy harvesters, many approaches, including the use of advanced materials and stochastic loading, have been adopted. As the viscoelastic property of advanced materials can be well described by fractional calculus, it is necessary to further discuss the dynamical behavior of the fractional-order vibration energy harvester. In this paper, the stochastic P-bifurcation of a fractional-order vibration energy harvester subjected to colored noise is investigated. Variable transformation is utilized to obtain the approximate equivalent system. Probability density function for the amplitude of the system response is derived via the stochastic averaging method. Numerical results are presented to verify the proposed method. Critical conditions for stochastic P-bifurcation are provided according to the change of the peak number for the probability density function. Then bifurcation diagrams in the parameter planes are analyzed. The influences of parameters in the system on the mean harvested power are discussed. It is found that the mean harvested power increases with the enhancement of the noise intensity, while it decreases with the increase of the fractional order and the correlation time.

This paper presents an electromagnetic vibration energy harvester utilizing 3D MEMS coils and multi-mode structure to improve the output power and broaden the frequency band. We fabricated and assembled the prototype, with a pair of 3D coils fabricated by lithography, silicon etching, silicon direct bonding and copper electroplating, et al., which are compatible with CMOS processes. The numerical simulation was conducted to analysis the vibration modes of the spring-mass system, which revealed the multi-mode mechanism of serpentine springs. We also tested the output power-frequency curves for different load and excitation acceleration to investigate the optimal load resistance and the influence of excitation. The test results showed that the proposed prototype can generate 1.2μW power under 992Hz for 1g acceleration with a half-power bandwidth of 65Hz, which are higher than some recent published data, proving the superiority of proposed structure.

Abstract A broadband vibration energy harvester based on nonlinear magnetic force and rotary pendulums is proposed in this paper. The harvester is mainly composed of a magnetoelectric transducer and a rotary pendulum fixed with four permanent magnets. In order to improve the working bandwidth of the harvester, two pairs of permanent magnets are added in the middle of the rotary pendulum by using magnetic nonlinearity. The mechanical - magnetic - electrical analytical model of the harvester is established, and the theoretical value obtained by the model is basically consistent with the experimental value. The results show that the harvester has a strong nonlinearity through the magnetic force. When the acceleration is 0.4 g, some typical testing results are as follows: the resonant frequency is 19 Hz, maximum peak-peak voltage is 94.1 V, half power bandwidth is 15.8 Hz, center frequency is 26.9 Hz, and the ratio of half power bandwidth to the center frequency is 58.73 %.
