Vehicle suspension system with hysteretic nonlinearity has obvious nonlinear characteristics, which directly cause the system to the possibility of existence of bifurcation and chaos. Two degrees of freedom for the 1/4 body suspension model is established and the behavior of the system under road multi-frequency excitations is analyzed. In the paper, it reveals the existence of chaos in the system with the Poincaré map, phase diagram, time history graph, and its chaotic behavior is controlled by nonlinear feedback. Numerical simulation shows the effectiveness and feasibility of the control method with improved ride comfort. The results may supply theoretical bases for the analysis and optimal design of the vehicle suspension system.

Vehicle suspension system is the key part in vehicle chassis, which has influence on the vehicle ride comfort, handling stability, and security. The extension control, which is not constrained by common control method, could further improve the suspension system performance. The 7 degree-of-freedom suspension model is built. The extension controller is designed according to the function differences. In different extension set domains according to the correlation function, the corresponding control strategy is designed to ensure the suspension system obtains optimal performance in the classical domain and expands the controllable range outside the classical domain as large as possible. By adopting game theory, the domain is optimally divided, and the domain boundary control jump is smoothed by introducing Takagi–Sugeno–Kang fuzzy control into the extension control. Through the simulation and results comparison, it is demonstrated that the extension control could further improve the vehicle ride comfort than the optimal control and the extension control ability can be further promoted through domain game and Takagi–Sugeno–Kang fuzzy control. The analysis of the influence of the extension controller parameter varieties on suspension system performance shows that the error-weighted coefficient and control coefficient have significant effect to the suspension system performance.

To improve the vehicle comfort, Magnetorheological damper is installed on the vehicle suspension system. So the system with hysteretic nonlinearity is a typical nonlinear system. First, the behavior of system under the periodic excitation force is analyzed, and the possibility of chaos is proved in the paper. Then, with piecewise-quadric function employed, the nonlinear feedback controller can be used to control the chaos. At the same time, Melnikov’s method is used to gain coefficient of controller. Numerical simulation shows that this method can the effectively guide chaotic motions toward regular motions. This control method is quite simple and effective without affecting the system properties. The results may supply theoretical bases for analysis and optimal design of vehicle suspension systems.

This paper focuses on the influence of various vehicle suspension systems on ride comfort. A vehicle model with eight degrees of freedom is introduced. With this model, various types of non-linear suspensions such as active and semi-active suspensions are investigated. From this investigation, we draw the conclusion that the active and semi-active suspensions models are beneficial for ride comfort.

AbstractIn this paper, an adaptive critic-based neurofuzzy controller is presented for a 2 DOF active vehicle suspension system with a servo hydraulic actuator. Fuzzy critic-based learning is a reinforcement learning method based on dynamic programming. The only information available for the critic agent is the system feedback, which is interpreted as the last action performed by the controller in the previous state. The signal produced by the critic agent is used alongside the algorithm of error back propagation to tune online conclusion parts of the fuzzy inference rules of the adaptive controller. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of this control method in terms of well disturbance rejection, improved ride comfort, robustness to model uncertainty and lower controller cost.

This paper deals with the two degrees of freedom response-type mechanism (2 DOF RTM) designed at Iran University Science and Technology. The applications of the 2 DOF RTM are to measure the longitudinal road profile and assess the vehicle suspension system. When the 2 DOF RTM is connected to a vehicle, it is able to measure the longitudinal road profile and it is capable of assessing the vehicle suspension system while it is perched upon the exciting device. The most important part of the 2 DOF RTM is its hub planned for decreasing the vehicle movement effects on the measurement. Moreover, this paper develops a novel procedure in order to convert the measured profile from the variable speed to the constant speed. To examine the 2 DOF RTM, a profile of a road is measured by the mechanism in the time-domain, and then the highly significant roughness indices such as power spectral density (PSD) of the road unevenness, international roughness index (IRI) and present serviceability index (PSI) are estimated using the measured profile.

In this paper, an optimal Fractional Order Proportional Integral Derivative (FOPID) controller is applied in vehicle active suspension system to improve the ride comfort and vehicle stability without consideration of the actuator. The optimal values of the five gains of FOPID controller to minimize the objective function are tuned using a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA). A half vehicle suspension system is modelled mathematically as 6 degrees-of-freedom mechanical system and then simulated using Matlab/Simulink software. The performance of the active suspension with FOPID controller is compared with passive suspension system under bump road excitation to show the efficiency of the proposed controller. The simulation results show that the active suspension system using the FOPID controller can offer a significant enhancement of ride comfort and vehicle stability.

The present article introduces an approach that combines passive and active elements to improve the ride and passenger comfort. The main aim of vehicle suspension system should isolate the vehicle body from road unevenness for maintaining ride and passenger comfort. The ride and passenger comfort is improved by reducing the car body acceleration caused by the irregular road surface. The vehicle body along with the wheel system is modelled as two degrees of freedom one fourth of car model. The model is tested on road bump with severe peak amplitude excitations. In the conclusion, a comparison of active, semi-active and passive suspension is shown using MATLAB simulations.
