Linear layout is the commonly major preferred arrangement of the flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The proposed enhanced sheep flock heredity algorithm to solving the unequal area linear layout problem through the real case study problem. The proposed model is to minimize the transportation cost with non-overlapping. Computational results show that proposed sheep flock heredity algorithm (SFHA) can obtain better than particle swarm optimization (PSO) and existing method.

This paper introduces an analytical method for evaluating the performance of closed loop manufacturing systems with unreliable machines and finite buffers. The method involves transforming an arbitrary loop into one without thresholds and then evaluating the transformed loop using a new set of decomposition equations. It is more accurate than existing methods and is effective for a wider range of cases. The convergence reliability, and speed of the method are also discussed. In addition, observations are made on the behavior of closed loop production systems under various conditions. Finally, the method is used in a case study to design a flexible manufacturing system for production of aerospace parts.

A common way of dynamically scheduling jobs in a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is by means of dispatching rules. The problem of this method is that the performance of these rules depends on the state the system is in at each moment, and no single rule exists that is better than the rest in all the possible states that the system may be in. It would therefore be interesting to use the most appropriate dispatching rule at each moment. To achieve this goal, a scheduling approach which uses machine learning can be used. Analyzing the previous performance of the system (training examples) by means of this technique, knowledge is obtained that can be used to decide which is the most appropriate dispatching rule at each moment in time. In this paper, a review of the main machine learning-based scheduling approaches described in the literature is presented.

In this paper, case-study evidence of the composition of four robot production systems is provided to reveal the linkages between local, regional, and national social divisions of labour. The relation-specific skill epitomizes the sophisticated procedures used to compose production systems, and the four case studies provide evidence of the communalities and varieties of these procedures. The geography of the interrelationships of the vertical divisions of labour of design-supplied suppliers and of the horizontal division of labour of design-approved suppliers is discussed. The cooperation and competition within this social division of labour allows Japan to function as a flexible manufacturing system.

The Taguchi method is widely used in the field of manufacturing systems performance simulation and improvement. On the other hand, Arena/OptQuest is one of the most efficient contemporary simulation/optimization software tools. The objective of this paper is to evaluate and compare these two tools applied to a flexible manufacturing system performance optimization context, based on simulation. The principal purpose of this comparison is to determine their performances based on the quality of the obtained results and the gain in the simulation effort. The results of the comparison, applied to a flexible manufacturing system mean flow time optimization, show that the Arena/OptQuest optimization platform outperforms the Taguchi optimization method. Indeed, the Arena/OptQuest permits one, through the lowest experimental effort, to reliably minimize the mean flow time of the studied flexible manufacturing system more than the Taguchi method.
