Abstract The aim of this work is to carry out the design of experiments that determine the influence of the welding parameters using Taguchi’s method on the grain size, HAZ, and the degree of dilution in 6063-T5 alloy. The welding process used is GMAW and the welding parameters are power, welding speed and bevel spacing. The study of the influence of the welding parameters on the measurements made in the welding (which are the size of heat affected zone, the degree of dilution, and the grain size) allows one to determine the quality of the joint . In addition, the welding parameter most influential in minimising the three measurements will be determined.

The appearance of cracks in brittle materials in general and in marble, in particular, is a problem in the hydro-abrasive jet cutting process. In this paper is presented a method to reduce the appearance of cracks when cutting with a hydro-abrasive jet of marble by using statistical analysis. The Taguchi method was used, establishing the main parameters that influence the process. Research design was based on performing experiments by modifying the parameters that influence the process. In this way, it has been shown that the stochastic effects resulting from the marble structure can be reduced. A careful study was made of the behavior of marble under the action of the hydro-abrasive jet, and of the behavior of the whole process in the processing of brittle materials. Results of experiments confirmed the hypothesis that statistical analysis is a procedure that can lead to a decrease in the number of cracks in processing. The measurement was performed with precise instruments and analyzed with recognized software and according to the results obtained, the reduction of the number of cracks is achieved through use of low pressure, a minimum stand-off distance and a small tube diameter. In this way, the paper presents a new and effective tool for optimizing the cutting with a hydro-abrasive jet of marble.

Abstract The surface integrity and machining accuracy of thin-walled micro parts are significantly affected by micro-milling parameters mostly because of their weak stiffness. Furthermore, there is still a lack of studies focusing on parameters optimization for the fabrication of thin-walled microscale parts. In this paper, an innovative approach is proposed for the optimization of machining parameters with the objectives of surface quality and dimension accuracy, which integrates the Taguchi method, principal component analysis method (PCA) and the Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). In the study, surface arithmetic average height Sa, surface root mean square height Sq, and 3-D fractal dimension Ds are selected to evaluate surface quality. Then micro-milling experiments are conducted based on the Taguchi method. According to the experimental results, the significance of machining parameters can be determined by range analysis. Besides, regression models for the responses are developed comparatively, and the PCA method is employed for dimension reduction of the optimization objective space. Finally, two combinations of machining parameters with the highest satisfaction are obtained through NSGA-II, and verification experiments are carried out. The results show that the surface quality and dimension accuracy of the thin-walled microscale parts can be simultaneously improved by using the proposed approach.
