An attempt has been made to increase the corrosion resistance properties of medium steel substrate by using silica sol.The results show that: sol-gel method can increase corrosion resistance of phosphating coating. PS(silicon sol coated after phosphating )’s corrosion potential reduced more than P(phosphating sample)’s and its corrosion density also reduced.Polarizationg resistance of PS can improved many times.R2 of PS more reduced than P,but R3 improved more than ten times and R4 improved over sixty times by using equivalent circuit to fit EIS measurement. Corrosion resistance of PS was higher than that of P.

The composites of Fe/Al2O3 gradient coatings on steel substrate were prepared by spraying and sol-gel method, and the microstructure and performances of the composites were analyzed. The results show that the adhesion strength of Fe/Al2O3 gradient coatings with FeAlNi transitional layers reaches 25.3MPa when the sintering temperature is 1220°C, and the surface hardness of coatings is four times higher than that of steel substrate. The coatings are mainly composed of α-Al2O3, AlFeO3 and NiFe2O4. There is no obvious hole or macro-interface, while some organization similar to the branch appears in the coatings. The bonding of Fe/Al2O3 gradient coatings and steel substrate mainly depends on adsorption, diffusion and chemical combination.

Abstract The objective of the present paper is to demonstrate the effect of sol-gel derived scratch resistant coatings on different metal surfaces for anticorrosive applications. However, practical applications are limited by problems intrinsic to sol-gel processing or specific of coating/metal systems. Coatings aimed to improve oxidation and wet corrosion resistance have been studied the most. The results published in the literature show that sol-gel coatings may offer good protection against oxidation. More difficult is to achieve a protection against wet corrosion. An important aspect of the application of the sol-gel method for coating metallic objects is also the deposition technique.

In this paper, Y2O3-Al2O3-ZrO2 nano-ceramic coatings were prepared on 316L stainless steel substrate at 600°C for 0.5 hour by sol-gel method, using Y(NO3)3•6H2O, ZrO(NO3)•2H2O and Al(NO3)3•9H2O as raw materials, hexamethylenetetramine as catalyst. Phases and morphology of these coatings were characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS. Effect of heat treatment temperature on microstructure of the coatings was studied. Y2O3-Al2O3-ZrO2 coatings with grain size about 50nm tightly integrated with metal substrate after densely sintering at 600°C. The grain sizes have grown up with increasing temperature.
