Green manufacturing has been recently viewed as a necessary part of green design which has drawn international attention in view of its close focus on sustainable development. This paper firstly analyzes the concept and idea of green manufacturing, proposing an idea of understanding green manufacturing from the point of resources, environment and product life cycle as a cross-cutting area, then probe the systematic structure and some problems in studying and implementing green manufacturing.

Green design is a key technology of green manufacturing. Compared with traditional design, green design requires taking into account the environment factors and pollution prevention measures in the product design during the designing phase. The basis to build an evaluation system of green design based on life cycle is a combination and integration of data and knowledge of different phases in product life cycle. Hence, this paper builts a hierarchy structure model of green design under influence of many factors according to the frame of ISO 14000, determines the weight of each factor based on experts’ opinion, and makes a systematic evaluation on the performance of green design based on fuzzy hierarchy evaluation principle.

The increasing growth of human population together with the material consumption of most industrialised nations taking place at an unsustainable rate have been causing the degradation of the planet. The implementation of sustainable methodologies can contribute to the implementation of more ecological practices. A computational tool integrating ecodesign principles was developed to support sustainable decisions. This tool allows designers and clients to investigate and compare different solutions for each product, taking into account the whole product life cycle, as well to incorporate the product’s physical data with the CAD model. In this work a decision computational tool was used combined with the additive manufacturing study case. This system can contribute to a more sustainable manufacturing product development, facilitating the evaluation of the environmental impact analysis, optimization and comparison of the product life cycle.

Nowadays economic activities and lifestyles must be green according to Sustainable Development, so Green Design must be taken at the whole process of product life cycle. Now 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) is well-known for sustainable envelopment, but for the sake of accelerating green development, It should follows the 10R principles in green design: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Renew, Recharge(or Refill), Repair(or Remedy), Re-manufacture(or Recover), Replace(or Replant), Re-clear(or Refine) and Remove. The 10R principles can make green design at the first time to start green development. It is also the historical responsibility and obligation of contemporary designers.
