In this paper the implementation procedure of Human Head curve reconstitution has been investigated and the curve reconstitution model has been built based on reverse engineering and pre-processing theory of data-points. The data acquisition of head curve was implemented by means of the laser scan system. The data-points were disposed, and the head curve was reconstructed, and the error and smoothness were analyzed by means of high-end CAD / CAE / CAM software CATIA V5. Those laid the foundation for late further research surface reconstruction.

This thesis proposes a new simple genetic algorithm, an artificial intelligence method, to optimize triangular mesh generation which reduces the number of data points required to depict an object without sacrificing the details and accuracy.

The Reverse Engineering Technology (RET) is extensively employed in the realm of product designing. In this paper, a Three-coordinate Measuring Machine is utilized first to measure the data points of the rearview mirror of a motorcycle, then under UG modeling environment, surface reconstruction is conducted, and lastly procedures like mold splitting and mold core machining are finished upon exercising the Moldwizard Module of UG software. In short, the application of the RET greatly shortened the period of product designing and manufacturing.

Globular indexing CAM mechanism is a good indexing mechanism. As the working curve of CAM contour surface is no extending curved surface, there is certain difficulty to design processing. It is new kinds of design method that reverse engineering apply in rapid modeling of curved CAM. In this way, designer can complete curve of CAM reverse modeling, and the rationality of the model is verified. At the same time, it also can reverse modeling and the subsequent development of other products to provide a reference.

In the field of reverse engineering, data quality assessment is a very important work in the detection, the result of data quality assessment will directly or indirectly affect the detection and the following manufacturing process quality. Data quality assessment can be used in the camera calibration, the model and model reconstruction comparison, and so on. In this paper, on the basis of the existing method of calculating each point error, and multipurpose use of average and standard error and some other concepts of mathematical statistics, and then improve a novel and simple calculating error method. This method is applicable to many groups of one-to-one ideal data and the measured data comparison, and it can be more intuitive to reflect the error of overall data, as well as the error distribution, and it can be more efficient to determine the measured data is reasonable or not. In this paper, the data point quality which is collected in the reverse engineering is assessed, and it can see that the method which is proposed in this article has some advantages in the data point quality assessment field.

This work introduces the workings of reverse engineering, its characteristics and application methods and proposes a data acquisition system applicable to industrial design, namely, three dimensional sensing system (3DSS). This work also gives a detailed account of 3DSS data acquisition methods and issues that deserve special attention in operation. A car model reconstruction case is provided as an example to study the performance of 3DSS in reverse engineering. Results have confirmed the significant role of this data acquisition method in reverse engineering.
