Abstract Effects of erosion phenomenon on the performance of a given gun barrel have been analyzed throughout numerical and experimental studies. Mainly, qualitative observations were performed. Theoretical relations between the evolution of the inner barrel profile and the provided interior ballistics are limited. This paper focuses on the development of a numerical model to predict the engraving resistance evolution in terms of the inner barrel profile in the different weapon's life stages. Four test barrels "12.7x99mm NATO" with different chamber volumes were considered. First, a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) with a contact scanning probe was used to measure the inner dimension of the guns. Second, piezoelectric sensors with a special doppler radar were considered to measure the (i) pressure and (ii) the bullet velocity in the test weapons. Finally, based on the obtained experimental results, a Finite Element (FE) analysis using the commercial software LS-DYNA was developed and validated. The obtained numerical results were used as insights to quantify the relationship between the engraving resistance and the chamber volume of small caliber guns.

Abstract Objectives To compare the accuracy (trueness and precision) of direct digitization of four different dental gap situation with two IOS (intraoral scanner). Materials and methods Four partially edentulous polyurethane mandible models were used: (1) A (46, 45, 44 missing), (2) B (45, 44, 34, 35 missing), (3) C (42, 41, 31, 32 missing), and (4) D (full dentition). On each model, the same reference object was fixed between the second molars of both quadrants. A dataset (REF) of the reference object was generated by a coordinate measuring machine. Each model situation was scanned by (1) OMN (Cerec AC Omnicam) and (2) PRI (Cerec Primescan AC) (n = 30). Datasets of all 8 test groups (N = 240) were analyzed using inspection software to determine the linear aberrations in the X-, Y-, Z-axes and angular deviations. Mann–Whitney U and two-sample Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests were used to detect differences for trueness and precision. Results PRI revealed higher trueness and precision in most of the measured parameters ($${\overrightarrow{V}}_{E}$$ V → E  120.95 to 175.01 μm, $$\overrightarrow{V}_{E}$$ V → E (x) − 58.50 to − 9.40 μm, $$\overrightarrow{V}_{E}$$ V → E (z) − 70.35 to 63.50 μm), while OMN showed higher trueness for $$\overrightarrow{V}_{E}$$ V → E  (y) regardless of model situation (− 104.90 to 34.55 μm). Model D revealed the highest trueness and precision in most of the measured parameters regardless of IOS ($$\overrightarrow{V}_{E}$$ V → E  120.95 to 195.74 μm, $$\overrightarrow{V}_{E}$$ V → E (x) − 9.40 to 66.75 μm,$$\overrightarrow{V}_{E}$$ V → E (y) − 14.55 to 51.50 μm, $$\overrightarrow{V}_{E}$$ V → E (z) 63.50 to 120.75 μm). Conclusions PRI demonstrated higher accuracy in the X- and Z-axes, while OMN depicted higher trueness in the Y-axis. For PRI, Model A revealed the highest distortion, while for OMN, Model B produced the largest aberrations in most parameters. Clinical relevance Current results suggest that both investigated IOS are sufficiently accurate for the manufacturing of tooth-borne restorations and orthodontic appliances. However, both hardware specifications of IOS and the presence of edentulous gaps in the dental model have an influence on the accuracy of the virtual model dataset.

In recent years, the diffusion of additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing (3DP) techniques for polymers have been boosted by the expiration of earlier patents from the last century and the development of low-cost machines. Since these technologies become more widespread, there is a need to assess the capability and accuracy of low-cost machines in terms of dimensional and geometric tolerance. To this aim, this work proposes an innovative reference part for benchmarking layerwise processes that involve the curing of photopolymers. The geometry of the part is conceived to include several classical shapes that are easily measurable for defining the part accuracy in terms of ISO IT grades and GD&T values. Two replicas of the reference part were fabricated by stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) using two machines and related proprietary materials by Sharebot Company. The replicas were printed with a layer thickness of 50 μm for the DLP process and 100 μm for the SLA one. The results of dimensional measurements of the replicas, that were carried out using a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), show that the geometric accuracy of the time-consuming DLP process is slightly better than that of stereolithography.

Abstract A mobile multilateration measurement system developed at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) around 2010 has been thoroughly investigated and refined to gain better performance with smaller uncertainties even when applied to the calibration of large complex workpieces. The mathematical background of multilateration and the propagation of uncertainties for the algorithms involved is explained in detail. Using the example of simple 1D and 2D measuring tasks, the influence of certain parameters characterizing the setup of the measurement system on the overall uncertainty is quantified. A strategy is developed to incorporate multi-stylus measurements which are often inevitable when workpieces feature complex shapes. The findings are verified on a large involute gear which is 2 m in diameter. All measurements are performed on PTB's large coordinate measuring machine with a working range of 5 m x 4 m x 2 m.

AbstractAccurate and fast three-dimensional (3D) measurement for industrial products/components designed to possess 3D structured shapes is a key driver for improved productivity. However, challenges for current techniques are considerable to measure structured specular surfaces. A technique named segmentation phase measuring deflectometry (SPMD) is proposed in this paper, which enables structured specular surfaces to be measured with high accuracy in one setup. Concept of segmentation in topology is introduced into phase measuring deflectometry, which separates a surface with complex structures into continuous segments. Each segment can be reconstructed based on gradient information to achieve good form accuracy, and all reconstructed segments can be fused into a whole 3D strucutred form result based on their absolute spatial positioning data. Here, we propose and discuss the principle of SPMD, a segmentation technique to separate a strucured surface into segments, a spatial positioning technique to obtain absolute position of the segments, and a data fusion strategy to fuse all reconstructed segments. Experimental results show SPMD can achieve nanometer level accuracy for form measurement of continuous segments by comparing with stylus profilometer, which is significantly higher than the accuracy of direct phase measuring deflectometry. Meanwhile, SPMD has micron level spatial positioning accuracy for structures by measuring two specular steps and comparing with coordinate measuring machine, which differentiates this technique from gradient-based phase measuring deflectometry that extends measurement capability from continuous specular surfaces to complex structured specular surfaces. Compared with the existing measurement techniques, SPMD significantly improved the convenience and ability to measure freeform and structured specular surfaces with the advantages of high measurement accuracy, fast measurement, and potential application for embedded measurement.
