A process of CAST, designing parameters and characteristics in the water treatment technology was introduced in this paper. The CAST was adopted to treat a scale of 3300m3/d of municipal wastewater and industrial effluent coming from a small town of Huojia county in Henan province. It is an innovative attempt to applied the CAST to a rural sewage treatment in the traditional water treatment field. What is more , after the chemical phosphorus removal and a sufficient reaction in the CAST tank, the effluent quality would ultimately meet level A while others could only meet level B in the state standard discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant (GB 18919-2002).

Land treatment process was chosen as the first-stage project in Xingtai Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Xingtai city, Hebei Province, PR China. UNITANK was chosen as the treatment technology in the secondary project in order to ameliorate the drawbacks of large land occupation and inconvenient management. In this paper, the operation modes of sewage treatment system, flush water system and sludge discharging system of UNITANK were discussed in detail on the basis of introduction of the basic structure and the technological process. According to the analysis of the project, it is suggested that UNITANK is more suitable for small or middle wastewater treatment plants with the advantages of simple structure, less land occupation, cost-efficient and reliable operation.

Washing clothing is a known pathway for microfibers to reach the environment. Previous research has investigated microfiber capture close to the source (i.e., the washing machine), and demonstrated washing machine filters as a potential mitigation strategy. Widespread deployment into homes may be an effective solution to prevent microfiber emissions. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of washing machine filters at the level of a community. We installed filters in 97 homes in a small town, representing approximately 10% of households connected to the municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). We evaluated treated final effluent and found a significant reduction in microfibers after filter installation. Furthermore, lint samples from filters revealed an average weekly lint capture of 6.4 g, equivalent to 179,200–2,707,200 microfibers. This research shows that microfiber filters on washing machines are effective at scale, and this result can help inform policy decisions to reduce microfiber emissions from laundering textiles.

In the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Gdansk a biological treatment technology allowing removing of nutrients was launched recently. This will result in increasing of the volume of sludge from 27.3 t d.m./d now to about 45 t d.m./d in the near future. The analysis of various possibilities of sludge utilization was made. It was concluded that incineration of the sludge seems to be the most promising method, while the possibilities of application of sludge in agriculture, forestry or to land reclamation are limited. Therefore it is suggested that 90% of sludge should be incinerated and the remaining 10% - stabilized with lime and applicated to land reclamation. The ahses generated during the incineration of sludge should be deposited at the municipal waste dump, with possible phosphorus extraction in the future.

The upgrading of an existing mechanical wastewater treatment plant to meet the new standards for effluent quality in the Municipality of Fredericia, Denmark, are presented. The Municipality has a lot of very big organic and inorganic industries, which leaves several different possibilities for treatment strategies. In 1987 pilot-scale tests were carried out to study the effects of various combinations of wastewater types on the treatment efficiency, and the tests resulted in two main solutions for the wastewater treatment system. The pilot-scale tests were run in a two - stage biology plant. The first stage was either a BIOSORPTION unit or a PRE-DENITRIFICATION unit. The second stage was a biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal unit (a BIO-DENIPHO unit).

An easily installed wastewater treatment plant was developed using an MBR process. The plant consists of inlet pumps, automatic fine screen, a main reactor in which aerator-mixer and MF membrane separators are installed and a control board. The main reactor is a sheeted pond which is easily constructed on-site by an excavation. As a result, the installation of this plant is easy and inexpensive, operation is easy, yet the effluent quality is high. The 50 m3/d pilot plant was constructed in our experimental facility in Ibaraki Pref., and operated from January 1997 to April 1998 to evaluate performance, stability and the ease of separation and installation of each unit. The results were satisfactory in all areas, except the durability of membrane permeability in the latter half of the experiment. For both hollow fibre type and plate type, membrane permeability immediately decreased due to the deposit of concentrated sludge cake on the surface, even though continuous bubble washing had been made. Hence,drastic improvement is needed in the way of sludge deposit control on the membrane surface. This is the key for the developed system to become a practical one.

In view of the well recognized need of reject water treatment in MWWTP (municipal wastewater treatment plant), this paper outlines two strategies for P removal from reject water using alum sludge, which is produced as by-product in drinking water treatment plant when aluminium sulphate is used for flocculating raw waters. One strategy is the use of the alum sludge in liquid form for co-conditioning and dewatering with the anaerobically digested activated sludge in MWWTP. The other strategy involves the use of the dewatered alum sludge cakes in a fixed bed for P immobilization from the reject water that refers to the mixture of the supernatant of the sludge thickening process and the supernatant of the anaerobically digested sludge. Experimental trials have demonstrated that the alum sludge can efficiently reduce P level in reject water. The co-conditioning strategy could reduce P from 597–675 mg P/L to 0.14–3.20 mg P/L in the supernatant of the sewage sludge while the organic polymer dosage for the conditioning of the mixed sludges would also be significantly reduced. The second strategy of reject water filtration with alum sludge bed has shown a good performance of P reduction. The alum sludge has P-adsorption capacity of 31 mg-P/g-sludge, which was tested under filtration velocity of 1.0 m/h. The two strategies highlight the beneficial utilization of alum sludge in wastewater treatment process in MWWTP, thus converting the alum sludge as a useful material, rather than a waste for landfill.

Abstract Wastewater treatment is the process used to remove contaminants from wastewater to produce an effluent suitable for discharge to the environment. Several kinds of wastewater are treated based on the concentration of various parameters. Domestic Wastewater/Municipal Wastewater is treated in Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), which involve various types of processes like physical, chemical and biological to treat the wastewater better. The treatment plant involves five steps of the process – preliminary treatment, primary treatment, secondary treatment, tertiary treatment and sludge treatment to meet the safe disposal guidelines of the department of the environment. In this paper, a municipal wastewater treatment plant for Uttara City is designed and modeled with GPS-X. GPS-X is a wastewater treatment plant modeling software package that is used for verify the treatment process. The design calculation of all unit operations is shown with a specification table. The Process Flow Diagram (PFD), Process Block Diagram (PBD) and mass balance of the process are expressed in the article. The design calculation of the STP is performed with a steady-state process. After each unit operation, the concentration of various parameters – TSS, BOD, VSS, TN is analyzed and the removal efficiency for different equipment is calculated. The STP is designed to maintain the guidelines of the Department of Environment, Bangladesh. At the end of the paper, the designing and modeling steps of a sewage treatment plant will be pursued. Finally, some recommendations are done in the conclusion section.

The objective of this work was to investigate the occurrence and fate of five heavy metals in water, sludge, and sediments from a conventional municipal wastewater treatment facility in Kisumu City, Kenya. The effluent quality was compared with the effluent quality parameters stipulated by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to assess the efficiency of the plant and potential effect of the discharged effluent on the recipient river. The levels of the heavy metals recorded in the sludge samples were significantly higher than those in the corresponding water samples. The order of the metal percentage removal efficiency (%R) from the treatment plant was Mg>Cu>Mn>Fe>Zn. It is concluded that the plant is a point source for Zn loading into the recipient waters which poses potential risk to end users downstream. The heavy metal-laden sludge was within permissible limits for utilization in agricultural lands.
