This paper investigates how to use shape memory alloy (SMA, Ni-Ti alloy) as a method of chucking parts. It is because tool holder can be simplified and miniaturized. SMA cannot be utilized as chucking tool because it is one-way direction, but it is possible to shrink and release a tool by changing temperature in case SMA is made of combing cylinder with alloy tool steel (SKD61 in JIS). In this report, prototype shrinking tool holder that used combing cylinder with SMA was developed and tried milling processes. As a result, it is clear that combing cylinder with SMA can endure cutting force.

Various heat treatment conditions with temperature scans of 300-700 °C, and annealing time scans of 1-4 hours were adopted in the annealing of Ti-49.5at.%-Ni shape memory alloy ultra thin wires. The mechanical hysteretic curves and the crystal morphology were obtained by the tensile-recovery testing and scan electric microscopes (SEM). The result shows that the shape memory effect of Ni-Ti alloy first decline after rising with the heat treatment temperature increases. Alloy with heat treatment effect in 500°C, presents the best. Time is not a significant factor for heat treatment.

The analysis of methods for assessing the properties of contact pairs "hard alloy tool - steel workpiece" with the aim of improving the reliability of the choice of turning modes in generations of CNC systems equipped with technical intelligence. The models for calculating the cutting speed, the cutting force, the value of roughness Ra, have been corrected by introducing into their structure an additional informative value about the properties of each contact pair - the thermoEMF of the trial cut.
