Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics of (Na0.8K0.2)0.5Bi0.5TiO3+x wt.% Mn (abbreviated as NBKT-x% Mn, x=0~0.5) were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The grain growth of the ceramics was restrained by Mn-doping at a certain extent. The mechanical quality factor Qm increases and the dielectric loss tanδ decreases with the increase of Mn-doping. Best piezoelectric properties were obtained for the composition of NKBT-0.2%Mn: d33=158 pC·N-1, tanδ=2.9% at 1 kHz, Qm=110 and kp=30%. The P-E loops show that remnant polarization Pr and coercive field Ec decrease slightly with the amount of the Mn2+ increasing up to 0.2wt.% and then increase as the content of Mn2+ increases further. NKBT-0.5wt. % Mn exhibits strong ferroelectricity with remnant polarization Pr = 38μC/cm2.

The roles of additives (MnO2, SiO2, and CdO) in controlling microstructural development and piezoelectric properties of Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3– PbTiO3–PbZrO3(PNN–PT–PZ) ceramics were systematically examined. The addition of SiO2 (<1 wt. %) to the pseudoternary PNN–PT-PZ system enhances densification, but suppresses grain growth significantly. On the other hand, the presence of MnO2 expedites the rate of grain growth without increasing the rate of densification appreciably. The observed difference in the grain-growth behavior was discussed in terms of the viscosity of liquid phase formed during sintering and the diffusion-controlled process for the solute-atoms transport. The rapid increase in the mechanical quality factor (Qm) and the decrease in the relative dielectric permittivity (∊r) and d33 for the MnO2-doped specimens indicate the formation of oxygen vacancies by the dissolution of Mn-atoms into the B-sites of perovskite structure. On the contrary, the presence of CdO (2 mol %) remarkably increases ∊r and d33 of PNN–PT–PZ ceramics.

In order to clarify the Na/K ratios dependence of piezoelectric properties, ( K 1-x Na x) NbO 3 ceramics were prepared by conventional solid-state sintering at x = 0.4–0.6 with a smaller compositional interval (0.02 mol). The results demonstrate that the Na/K ratios have obvious effect on piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of ( K 1-x Na x) NbO 3 ceramics. Piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties show the maximum (d33 = 147 pC/N, kp = 0.40, and Pr = 24 μC/cm2) at x = 0.54, which is not consistent with conventional viewpoint. The reasons should be attributed to the existence of a phase boundary at x = 0.54 mol, which is similar to the morphotropic phase boundary in Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ceramics.

Extending the investigations on (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-based solid solution for lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, this paper consider the complex solid-solution system (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3–(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3[BNT-BKT]. (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3with 7~ 30 mol% (Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3ceramics have been prepared following the conventional mixed oxide process. A morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between rhombohedral (R) and tetragonal (T) was found at the composition 0.82BNT-0.18BKT with correspondingly enhanced piezoelectric properties. The electromechanical planar coupling factor is higher for compositions near the MPB. The mechanical quality factor (Qm), planar coupling coefficient (kp) and thickness coupling coefficient (kt) of 0.82BNT-0.18BKT ceramics were 125, 28.8% and 47.4%, respectively.

Li+ and Ta5+ modified lead-free piezoelectric ceramics [(K0.5Na0.5)1-xLix](Nb1-yTay)O3 have been prepared by an ordinary sintering technique. Effect of Li+ and Ta5+ on microstructure and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics was systematically studied. A morphotropic phase boundary between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases is identified in the composition range of (0.02≤x≤0.04, 0.15≤y≤0.25), which can enhance electrical properties of [(K0.5Na0.5)1-xLix](Nb1-yTay)O3 ceramics. The Curie temperature TC of these ceramics is lower than that of pure (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 ceramics, but the temperature of orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition TO-T of the former is higher than that of the latter. TC and TO-T both decrease as the content of Ta5+ increases. With the addition of Li+ increasing, TC increases. The optimal piezoelectric properties are obtained at (x, y)=(0.03, 0.20): piezoelectric constant d33 is 192pC/N; the electromechanical coefficient of the planar mode kp is 44%; room temperature dielectric constant εr is 1049, and the corresponding mechanical quality factor Qm is 49.

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics Sr2Bi4-xGdxTi5O18 were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method. Pure bismuth layered structural ceramics with uniform gain size were obtained in all samples. The effect of Gd-doping on the dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of Sr2Bi4Ti5O18 ceramics were also investigated. It was found that that Gd3+ dopant gradually decreased the Curie temperature (Tc) with the lower dielectric loss (tand) of SBTi ceramics. In addition, Gd-doping with appropriate content improved the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the SBTi ceramics. The piezoelectric constant (d33) of the Sr2Bi3.9Gd0.1Ti5O18 ceramic reached the maximum value, which is 22 pC/N. The results showed that the Sr2Bi4-xGdxTi5O18 ceramic was a promising lead-free piezoelectric material.

Lead-free piezoelectric 0.95(Na0.49K0.49Li0.02)(Nb0.8Ta0.2)O3–0.05CaZrO3 with 2 wt % MnO2 addition was prepared using mechanochemically-assisted solid-state synthesis. Upon mechanochemical activation of the mixture of reagents partial amorphization occurs which contributes to a significantly lower temperature of completion of the solid-state reaction, ~600 °C as opposed to ~700 °C for the conventional solid-state synthesis as determined by thermal analysis. The ceramic specimens prepared by the mechanochemically-assisted route exhibit improved compositional homogeneity and slightly enhanced piezoelectric properties, achieved in a considerably shorter processing time compared to the conventional solid-state synthesis route, which was studied as a reference.

Lead-free (1-x-y)Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-xBaTiO3-yBiFeO3 ceramics were synthesized by ordinary sintering technique. The compositional dependence of phase structure and electrical properties of the ceramics was systematically investigated. All samples possessed pure perovskite structure. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of ceramics were investigated with the amount of different BiFeO3 substitutions. The addition of BiFeO3 can not only decrease Ec and Pr but also lead to a significant degradation of the dielectric loss tanδ.
