A novel way producing magnesium billets, LFEC (low frequency electromagnetic casting processing), was developed in Northeastern University in China. The high-quality magnesium billets with less macrosegregation, refined microstructure, and better surface quality were achieved because the temperature field and the flow pattern of magnesium DC casting were improved significantly after applying low frequency electromagnetic field. Extrusion is an important plastic deformation process for magnesium alloys. In this research, the magnesium billets from LFEC were extruded through a special designed die into sheets. The results of investigation on AZ31B indicated that the extrusion velocity has obvious effects on their microstructures and mechanical properties and the sheets from LFEC had finer microstructure and higher mechanical properties than that from conventional DC casting.

One of the main ways to improve product quality, obtained by forging, is implementing shear and alternating deformation (severe plastic deformation) during deformation process, which allows manufacturing products with required mechanical properties and less forging reduction. In practice, it is possible to implement shear and alternating deformation by improving the design of the ingots or the billets, forging tools, heating modes and forging method. In this paper newly designed forging die, which allows implementation of shear and alternating deformation without sufficient changes of the billet sizes, is proposed. By the research results of the new forging technology influence in the proposed tools on the microstructure evolution, it was found, that the use of the newly designed step-wedge dies has more potential for manufacturing high-quality forgings with required level of mechanical properties.

Abstract The object of this study was to develop parameters of plastic deformation process of magnesium alloy - ZK60A. The tests have showed that for this alloy it is possible to use the temperature of the plastic deformation process ranging from 350°C to 450°C. Samples were characterized by mechanical properties and structure in different heat treatment tempers. This magnesium alloy obtained in the T5 temper higher mechanical properties then T6 temper. The paper also presents research results of investigation of conversion coating on ZK60A magnesium alloy by anodic oxidation method in non-chromium solutions. It was found that the coating produced in non-chromium solutions show considerable increase of corrosion resistance of tested alloy.
