In order to obtain a good result in the laser welding process, the laser welding technology for manufacturing an automobile body is studied in this research. The monitoring of the welding quality and the seam tracking are studied to improve the productivity. The robot, the seam tracking system and CW Nd:YAG laser are used for the robot laser welding system. The laser system is 4kW Nd:YAG laser_(HL4006D) of Trumpf and the robot system is IRB6400R of ABB. The robot laser welding system is equipped with the seam tracker and plasma sensor. The seam tracking system is composed of SMART-20LS and RAPAL of Servo-Robot and MVS-5 sensor of MVS. The precise positioning of the laser beam on the joint to be assembled is obtained by seam tracker. The welding joints of steel plate are butt and lap joint. The three dimensional welding for non-linear tailored blank is performed after the fundamental experiments of bead-on-plate. Finally, the welding process for non-linear tailored blank and front side member is studied. The monitoring method of welding quality and seam tracking along the butt-joint are studied. The artificial defects in joint are well observed by the plasma intensity signal from the plasma sensor of UV and IR. The robot based laser welding system is developed for the precision seam tracking and the real-time monitoring of welding quality.

The symmetrical insulated mug is composed of two layers. The two ends of the two layers form the mouth and bottom seams of the insulated mug. The weld quality of the two seams is very important to keep the vacuum degree of the air between the two layers, which is vital for the heat-insulating property of the mug. Due to the narrow seam, laser welding is used. Since laser welding has high demand on the relative position of the seam and the laser torch, a vision-based seam tracking system is designed. Before welding is started, the vision sensor scans the seam and feature sample points are collected. A reconstruction algorithm is proposed to form the image containing the seam. Then, a least square fitting (LSF) method combined with random sample consensus (RANSAC) method is proposed to detect the smooth seam from the sample points. In the welding process, a seam tracking system with fuzzy logic control method is presented to keep the torch precisely on the seam. Finally, full experiments are conducted in the welding factory of the insulated mugs to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system and method.

Configuration of a molten pool is related to the laser welding quality. Analyzing the configuration of a molten pool is important to monitor the laser welding process. This paper proposes a method of segmentation of a molten pool and its shadow during high power disk laser welding, consequently provides the groundwork for reconstruction of the molten pool and analysis of welding quality. Subsection linear stretching histogram equalization was applied to enhance the contrast of the original images firstly, and then edge detection was used to highlight the edges. After that we used the morphology filtering method to produce the segmentation mask, and then combined the mask with the original images to get the final segmentation results. Also, the proposed method was compared with other traditional methods. The experimental results showed that our method not only could give better segmentation results and process large quantities images automatically, but also overcame the less-segmentation problems of traditional methods.

The demand for LNG-powered ships and related equipment is rapidly increasing among major domestic and foreign carriers due to the strengthened IMO regulations on the sulfur content of ship fuel oil. LNG operation in a cryogenic environment requires a storage tank and fuel supply system that uses steel with excellent brittleness and fatigue strength. A ship using LNG is very sensitive to explosion and fire. For this reason, 9% Ni is often used, because ships require high quality products with special materials and structural technologies that ensure operability at cryogenic temperatures. However, research to derive uniform welding quality is urgent because the deterioration of weld quality in the 9% Ni steel welding process is caused by high process difficulty and differences in welding quality depending on a welder’s skill set. This study proposes a method to guarantee a uniform quality of 9% Ni steel in a fiber laser welding process by categorizing weld joint hardness according to the dilution ratio of a base material and establishing a standard for quantitative evaluation.

Welding seam tracking precision is a key factor influencing welding quality for master-slave robot remote welding system. However, it does not satisfy the welding requirement due to significant noises. To eliminate the influence of noises upon the seam tracking precision and improve the seam tracking precision, a master-slave robot remote welding system was built and Kalman filtering (KF) was applied to the seam tracking process. The experimental results show that the KF eliminated the influence of noises upon the seam tracking precision and improved the seam tracking precision.

Many sensors, such as the vision sensor and the laser displacement sensor, have been developed to automate the arc welding process. However, these sensors have some problems due to the effects of arc light, fumes and spatter. An electromagnetic sensor, which utilizes the generation of an eddy current, was developed for detecting the weld line of a butt joint in which the root gap size was zero. An automatic seam tracking system designed for sheet metal arc welding was constructed with a sensor. Through experiments, it was revealed that the system had an excellent seam tracking accuracy of the order of ±0.2mm.

For the industrial adoption of laser welding technology, it is important that the yards achieve full control of the process and that they and the classification societies reach a level of confidence in the technology to permit a reduced level of quality controls after the welds have been performed. This would lead to a practicable and easier implementation of the technology in the industrial field. This is the approach that two EU yards, Odense Steel Shipyard and Fincantieri, had in mind while developing, with the partnership of important EU research institutes and classification societies, the EU-supported research project Shipbuilding Laser Welds: An Integrated System for Assurance and Control of Quality (SHILWACQ). The author, who was the coordinator of the project, explains, from the point of view of an end user shipyard, how this approach was implemented following two main research lines:the quality assurance line, focusing on the "defect avoidance" criterion and the "defect acceptance" (fitness for purpose) criterion;the quality control line, concentrating on the on-line process monitoring and automated not-destructive-test inspection systems. The CO2 laser welding technology for small/medium-thickness steel hull components is addressed. The article explains the activity development and the scientific results achieved by the two research lines, as well as how these results have been tested and validated in the industrial environment.
