Effects of High-Energy Ball Milling Time on the Sintering Process of FeSe Superconductors

FeSe superconducting bulks were prepared with high energy ball milling (HEBM) aided sintering process, within which process, tetragonal β-FeSe superconducting phase could be formed directly with one step sintering process, and the formation of hexagonal δ-FeSe non-superconducting phase was effectively avoided. The influences of HEBM time on the sintering process of FeSe bulks were systematically investigated. With different HEBM time, the phase composition and morphology of precursor powders changed correspondingly, which thus influenced the final phase composition and superconducting properties of FeSe superconducting bulks. Due to the formation of FeSe bulks with larger tetragonal phase content and higher superconducting transition temperature, HEBM time of 6.0 h was recognized as the optimal parameter. Shorter HEBM time could lead to the insufficient decrease of particle size and low density. While longer HEBM time caused the formation of amorphous hexagonal δ-FeSe, which crystallized during sintering process. Thus no more tetragonal FeSe could be obtained. The FeSe superconducting bulk with the critical temperature Tc(onset) of 8.0 K was obtained with the HEBM time of 6 h, and sintering temperature of 700 oC for 12 h.

TiC-TiB2 composite ceramics were successfully fabricated via planetary ball milling of 72 mass% Ti and 28 mass % B4C powders, followed by low temperature sintering process at 1200°C. The microstructure of the ball-milled powder mixtures and composite ceramics were characterized by Differential thermal analysis equipment (DTA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the ball-milled powder mixtures (Ti and B4C powders) were completely transformed to TiC-TiB2 composite ceramics as the powders were milled for 60 h and sintered at 1200°C for 1 h. The formation mechanism of the TiC-TiB2 composite was discussed. The high energy ball milling and necessary sintering for the powder mixtures plays an important role in the formation of the composites.

The NiO and Fe2O3 powders were mixed by the high-energy ball-milling, followed by a sintering of the mixture at 1340°C for 0.5 h. XRD, SEM, DSC, and size measurements were preformed to study the microstructure evolution in the high-energy ball-milled mixture and the sintered ones, as well. It showed that the high-energy ball-milling processes resulted in a severe lattice distortion in the powder of Fe2O3, but only a slight lattice distortion in NiO. Meanwhile, a solid solution of iron atoms into the NiO lattice was also detected in the milling process. It was also found that the solubility of the iron atoms into the NiO lattice delayed the synthesizing reaction in the following sintering process.

Air plasma spray technique (APS) is widely used in the biomedical industry for the development of HA-based biocoatings. The present study focuses on the influence of powder homogenization treatment by high-energy ball milling (HEBM) in developing a novel hydroxyapatite-barium titanate (HA/BT) composite coating deposited by APS; in order to compare the impact of the milling process, powders were homogenized by mechanical stirring homogenization (MSH) too. For the two-homogenization process, three weight percent ratios were studied; 10%, 30%, and 50% w/w of BT in the HA matrix. The phase and crystallite size were analyzed by X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD); the BT-phase distribution in the coating was analyzed by backscattered electron image (BSE) with a scanning electron microscope (SEM); the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was used to determinate the Ca/P molar ratio of the coatings, the degree of adhesion (bonding strength) of coatings was determinate by pull-out test according to ASTM C633, and finally the nanomechanical properties was determinate by nanoindentation. In the results, the HEBM powder processing shows better efficiency in phase distribution, being the 30% (w/w) of BT in HA matrix that promotes the best bonding strength performance and failure type conduct (cohesive-type), on the other hand HEBM powder treatment promotes a slightly greater crystal phase stability and crystal shrank conduct against MSH; the HEBM promotes a better behavior in the nanomechanical properties of (i) adhesive strength, (ii) cohesive/adhesive failure-type, (iii) stiffness, (iv) elastic modulus, and (v) hardness properties.
