Effect of DC Pulse Patterns on Spark Plasma Sintering Process of [Fe0.8Co0.2B0.05Si0.2]96Nb4 Bulk Metallic Glass

The influence of direct current pulse on–off patterns on spark plasma sintering of [Fe0.8Co0.2B0.05Si0.2]96Nb4 on kinetics competition and coordination mechanism of the interface bonding and crystallization has been investigated systematically. No crystallization of metallic glassy matrix and good bonding state between the particles were responsible for good mechanical properties of the fabricated Fe-based bulk glassy alloy at 2:9 (on: off) pattern. The higher local micro area’s instantaneous power and larger cooling time caused by low pulse duty ratio played a vital role in consolidation of amorphous alloy powder and desired structural properties.

Spark plasma sintering (SPS), as a developed rapid sintering technique, has a great potential for producing larger metallic glassy alloy specimens in a variety of shapes than those fabricated by casting methods, and can readily produce composites by dispersing crystalline particles in the glassy matrix. In this study, the Ni52.5Nb10Zr15Ti15Pt7.5 bulk metallic glassy matrix composites dispersed homogeneously with ceramics ZrO2 particulates were fabricated by the SPS process. The plastic ductility of the Ni52.5Nb10Zr15Ti15Pt7.5 glassy matrix composites was improved by adding ZrO2 particulates into the glassy alloy. The matrix of the fabricated composites maintained a glassy phase after the SPS process.

Using the mixed powders containing gas-atomized powders of metallic glassy alloys (Cu50Zr45Al5, Fe73Si7B17Nb3, Ni52.5Nb10Zr15Ti15Pt7.5) blended with high-conductive Cu particulates, we produced bulk metallic glassy alloy composites with high strength and high electrical conductivity, as well as with enhanced plasticity and satisfying large size requirements by a spark plasma sintering process. In this paper we present and review our research results on the fabrication and properties of the bulk glassy alloy composites by the spark plasma sintering process.

The addition of Cu to near equiatomic NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) can provide some modifications of their shape memory properties by affecting their transformation behavior. The same effect was obtained in the case of Ni3Ti2 and Ni4Ti3 precipitates presence in the microstructure of NiTi. Also the substitution of Cu to NiTi alloys increases the hardness of the materials. This paper presents the microstructural and mechanical investigations of NiTi and NiTiCu alloys obtained by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process that represents a great potential for researchers as a new process for the fabrication of intermetallic compounds.

Tungsten carbide (WC) based composites are usually produced with cobalt, but this binder has the inconvenience of shortage, unstable price and potential carcinogenicity. The objective of this study was to develop WC composite with intermetallic Fe3Al matrix. Powders of WC, iron and aluminum, with composition WC-10 wt% Fe3Al, and 0.5 wt% zinc stearate were milled in a vibration mill for 6 h and sintered in a SPS (spark plasma sintering) furnace at 1150 °C for 8 min under pressure of 30 MPa. Measured density and microstructure analysis showed that the composite had significant densification during the (low-temperature, short time) sintering, and X-ray diffraction analysis showed the formation of intermetallic Fe3Al. Analysis by Vickers indentation resulted in hardness of 11.2 GPa and fracture toughness of 24.6 MPa.m1/2, showing the feasibility of producing dense WC-Fe3Al composite with high mechanical properties using the SPS technique.
