While shape memory alloys (SMAs) and shape memory polymers (SMPs) can already be found in diverse applications, shape memory textiles are less often used. Nevertheless, they are regularly investigated. Typical ways to produce shape memory textiles (SMTs) are introducing shape memory wires, printing shape memory polymers on them (“4D printing”), or using textile materials such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) which show shape memory properties on their own. This review gives a brief overview of these technological possibilities and possible applications of shape memory textiles.

A novel, environmentally friendly, fast, and flexible polishing process for Nitinol parts is presented in this study. Nitinol samples with both superelastic and shape memory properties at room temperature were investigated. The chemical contamination and surface roughness of superelastic Nitinol plates were examined before and after plasma electrolytic polishing. The shift in phase transformation temperature and tensile strength before and after the polishing process were analysed using Nitinol wire with shape memory properties. The obtained experimental results were compared to the data obtained on reference samples examined in the as-received condition. It was found that plasma electrolytic polishing, when the right process parameters are applied, is capable of delivering Nitinol parts with extremely high surface quality. Moreover, it was experimentally proven that plasma electrolytic polishing does not have a negative impact on functionality or mechanical properties of polished parts.

The shape memory properties and microstructure of Fe41Ni28Co17Al11.5(Ti+Nb)2.5 (at.%) cold-rolled alloys were studied at the first time using the values reported in constant stress thermal cycling experiments in a three-point bending test. Thermo-magnetization curves of 97% cold-rolled and solution-treated sample aged at 600 °C for 24, 48 and 72 h showed evidence of the martensitic transformation, and the transformation temperatures increased their values from 24 to 72 h. The alloy cold-rolled to 97% and then solution-treated at 1277 °C for 1 h showed that most grains were aligned near <100> in the rolling direction in the recrystallization texture. The intensity of texture was 13.54, and an average grain size was around 400 μm. The sample aged at 600 °C for 48 h showed fully recoverable strain up to 1.6% at 200 MPa stress level in the three-point bending test. However, the experimental recoverable strain values were lower than the theoretical values, possibly due to the small volume fraction of low angle grain boundary, the formation of brittle grain boundary precipitates, and a grain boundary constraint lower than the expected intensity of texture in the samples.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) belongs to the 3D printable materials which show shape-memory properties, i.e., which can recover their original shape after a deformation if they are heated above the glass transition temperature. This makes PLA quite an interesting material for diverse applications, such as bumpers, safety equipment for sports, etc. After investigating the influence of the infill design and degree, as well as the pressure orientation on the recovery properties of 3D printed PLA cubes in previous studies, here we report on differences between different PLA materials as well as on the impact of post-treatments after 3D printing by solvents or by heat. Our results show not only large differences between materials from different producers, but also a material-dependent impact of the post treatments. Generally, it is possible to tailor the mechanical and recovery properties of 3D printed PLA parts by choosing the proper material in combination with a chemical or temperature post-treatment.
