A nonsteroidal drug, flufenamic acid (FA) was successfully intercalated into magnesium-aluminium-layered double hydroxide, MAL for the formation of magnesium-aluminium-flufenamate-layered double hydroxide, MAF by self-assembly technique. As a result of the successful intercalation, basal spacing increased from 9.8 Å in the MAL to 23.5 Å in the MAF hybrid nanocomposite. The FTIR spectra of the MAF hybrid nanocomposite show resemblance peaks of the MAL and FA suggesting the inclusion of the organic compound into the MAL interlamellae. The percentage loading of FA was found to be 74.4 % (w/w) calculated from the percentage of carbon in the resulting material, MAF.

An organo-mineral nanohybrid material in which the organic moiety is interleaved inside the inorganic lamella was prepared by using phenoxyacetate anions as a guest in the Mg-Al-layered double hydroxide lamella (as an inorganic host) by the self-assembly technique, anion exchange and the reconstruction methods. The powder XRD patterns of the resulted materials show that the basal spacing of the Mg-AI-layered double hydroxide with carbonate as the counter anions expanded from 7.7 ? to around 16.6 ? in the nanohybrid materials. IR studies show that the absorption bands of the resulting materials correspond to the characteristic functional groups of the host and the guest structures. When the two results are taken together, the expansion can be attributed to the intercalation of the phenoxyacetic acid in the inorganic interlamella for the formation of the nanohybrid material. The intercalation of phenoxyacetate anions was also confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TG).

Synthesis of a new hybrid nanocomposite materials, zinc-aluminium-fenoprofen, ZAF was successfully accomplished by self-assembly method with molar ratio of Zn to Al; R=2 at concentration of fenoprofen=0.3 M. As a result of the successful intercalation, the interlayer spacing expanded from 9.8 Å in the zinc-aluminium-layered double hydroxide, ZAL to 20.1 Å in the ZAF hybrid nanocomposite. The FTIR spectra of the ZAF show resemblance peaks of ZAL and fenoprofen indicating the inclusion of the organic compound into the LDH interlamellae. The percentage loading of the guest anion, fenoprofen in ZAL was estimated to be about 63.4% (w/w) calculated from the carbon content.

A new magnetic Fe3O4/MO-intercalated-LDH composite has been synthesized by combination of Fe3O4, layered double hydroxide (LDH) and methyl orange (MO). Fe3O4/Zn2CrLDH and Fe3O4/MO-intercalated-LDH were obtained via two-step microwave hydrothermal and anion exchange method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were conducted to characterize the as-prepared samples. The latter exhibited that basal spacing of Zn2Cr-LDH is 1.18 nm. The value of saturation magnetization (Ms) is 20.5 emu/g. In addition, the amounts of adsorbed MO reached 1.54 mmol/g. Therefore, the material shows several advantages for the removal of pollutants.

Zn-Al-9-hydroxy-9-flourenecarboxylate-layered double hydroxide, ZAF nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by direct self-assembly method with Zn to Al molar ratio, R = 4 and 0.4 M 9-hydroxy-9-flourenecarboxylate, 9H9F. Due to the inclusion of a new anion, 9H9F basal spacing expanded from 8.9 Å in the Zn-Al-layered double hydroxide, ZAL to 13.2 Å in the ZAF. The FTIR spectra of the hybrid nanocomposite show resemblance peaks of the ZAL and 9H9F indicating the inclusion of the organic compound into the LDH interlamellae. The percentage loading of 9H9F was found to be 75.9 % (w/w). Sustained release of 9H9F from ZAF into various aqueous solutions was found to be dependent on the incoming anion, with the percentage saturated release of 94%, 72%, and 15% in sodium phosphate, sodium sulfate and sodium chloride aqueous solution 0.0005 M, respectively. This study indicates that ZAL can be used as a host carrier for plant growth regulator, 9H9F with sustained release capability.

A new layered-double hydroxide-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate (LDH-HPP) has been synthesized by intercalation of 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (HPP) into Zn-Al-layered double hydroxide (LDH) by ion-exchange method. PXRD, FTIR, TGA/DTG, compositional studies and FESEM were used to characterize the synthesized nanocomposite. The intercalation of HPP into the interlayer gallery space of LDH was characterized by x-ray diffractogram showed expanded basal spacing of the value of 17.1 Å. The FTIR spectra of LDH-HPP nanocomposite synthesis by 0.025M HPP resembled a mixture of both FTIR spectra of HPP and LDH. Thermal analysis of LDH-HPP nanocomposite shows a better thermal stability as compared to the pure HPP, which proved that the intercalation of HPP into LDH interlayer enhanced the thermal stability of the HPP.

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) hybrid materials of Zn-Al-layered double hydroxide-3,4-dichlorophenoxy acetate acidnanocomposites (ZADs) were prepared by direct self-assembly method. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 7.5 using 2M NaOH. Various Zn2+ to Al3+ molar ratios, R ranging from 1 to 6 were used with a fixed concentration of 3,4-D at 0.3 M. The Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns showed the formation of well-ordered nanocomposite with the expansion of basal spacing from 8.9 Å in the Zinc-Aluminium-Layered Double Hydroxide (ZAL) to 18.7 - 22.1 Å in the resulting nanocomposites. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)spectra for the nanocomposites showed features for both ZAL and ZAD, showing the successful intercalation of the organic moiety into the LDH interlayer. The percentage loading of 3,4-dichlorophenoxy acetati acid(3,4-D) in LDH was found to be increased from 34.7-48.1 % (w/w), as the mole fraction of Al decreased from 0.44-0.15. This study shows that the mole fraction of zinc ion was replaced by aluminium ion in the LDH plays an important role in controlling the physic-chemical properties of the resulting material.

Cinnamic acid (CA) is known to lose its definite function by forming into radicals that able to penetrate into the skin and lead to health issues. Incorporating CA into zinc/aluminum-layered double hydroxides (Zn/Al-LDH) able to reduce photodegradation and eliminate close contact between skin and CA. Co-precipitation or direct method used by using zinc nitrate hexahydrate and aluminium nitrate nonahydrate as starting precursors with addition of various concentration of CA. The pH were kept constant at 7 ± 0.5. Fourier Transform Infrared-Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) shows the presence of nanocomposites peak 3381 cm–1 for OH group, 1641 cm–1 for C=O group, 1543 cm–1 for C=C group and 1206 cm–1 for C–O group  and disappearance of  N–O peak at 1352 cm–1 indicates that cinnamic acid were intercalated in between the layered structures. Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD) analysis for Zn/Al-LDH show the basal spacing of 9.0 Ǻ indicates the presence of nitrate and increases to 18.0 Ǻ in basal spacing in 0.4M Zn/Al-LDH-CA. CHNS analysis stated that 40 % of cinnamic acid were being found and intercalated in between the interlayer region of the Zn/Al-LDH with higher thermal stability. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) images of 0.4 M Zn/Al-LDH-CA shows that the nanocomposites are in more compact, flaky non porous, large agglomerates with smooth the surfaces of the intercalated compound. Controlled release was successful with 80 % release in phosphite anion and 70 % release carbonate anion. The cinnamic acid was successfully inserted between the interlayer regions of Zn/Al-LDH with slow release formulation. Copyright © 2019 BCREC Group. We fabricated new magnetic material CuFe2O4/Zn2Cr-LDH by the combination of CuFe2O4 and layered double hydroxide (LDH) through two steps. CuFe2O4 was prepared by sol-gel method with the assistant of citric acid, which was used in synthesis of the composite via microwave hydrothermal method subsequently. The physicochemical properties of the composite was characterized by several techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). The magnetic composite reveals several advantage of LDH structure and spinel ferrite oxide and is potential for the application of heterogeneous catalysis.
