Voorgaand onderzoek naar de rol van partnerkeuze in relatieontbinding toont aan dat partners die afkomstig zijn uit verschillende herkomstgroepen doorgaans een hogere kans hebben om uit elkaar te gaan. Deze onderzoeken focussen zich echter voornamelijk op huwelijken en het blijft daarom onduidelijk of dezelfde dynamieken zich ook aftekenen binnen ongehuwd samenwonende koppels en wat de rol is van voorhuwelijks samenwonen. Dit artikel bestudeert de samenhang tussen partnerkeuze en relatieontbinding voor een steekproef van koppels die voor de eerste keer huwden of ongehuwd gingen samenwonen tussen 1999 en 2001. De data zijn afkomstig uit de Belgische Kruispuntbank voor Sociale Zekerheid en geven informatie over de ontbindingskansen van gehuwd en ongehuwd samenwonende koppels met minstens één partner van Belgische, Zuid‐Europese, Turkse, Marokkaanse, Congolese, Burundese of Rwandese afkomst. Aan de hand van survival analyse en multivariate event history modellen gaat dit onderzoek na of ontbindingskansen verschillen tussen endogame en gemengde koppels en of deze dynamieken gelijkaardig zijn over de verschillende relatietypes heen. De resultaten geven aan dat endogame koppels de laagste ontbindingskansen hebben als het gaat om een huwelijk zonder substantiële periode van voorhuwelijks samenwonen. Voor koppels die ongehuwd samenwonen of huwden na een periode van ongehuwd samenwonen zien we dit patroon echter niet terugkomen en zijn verschillen naar partnerkeuze beperkter of zijn het net de gemengde koppels die lagere ontbindingskansen hebben. Na controle voor relevante achtergrondkenmerken blijkt vooral voor gemengde koppels de kans op relatieontbinding sterk te verschillen naar relatietype. Abstract :  Previous studies on the role of partner choice in relationship dissolution have shown that partners who come from different ethnic groups usually have a higher chance of separating. However, these studies focus on marriages and it therefore remains unclear whether the same dynamics can be seen in unmarried cohabiting couples or what the exact role of this period of premarital cohabitation is. This article examines the relationship between partner choice and relationship dissolution in a sample of couples who married for the first time or started living together without being married between 1999 and 2001. The data comes from the Belgian Crossroads Bank of Social Security and give information on union dissolution among married and unmarried cohabiting couples with at least one partner of Belgian, Southern European, Turkish, Moroccan, Congolese, Burundian or Rwandan descent. Based on survival analysis and multivariate event history models, this study examines whether dissolution chances differ between endogamous and mixed couples and whether or not these dynamics are different across relationship types. The results indicated that endogamous couples have the lowest chance of dissolution when it comes to marriages without a substantial period of premarital cohabitation. For couples who were unmarried cohabiting or married after a period of unmarried cohabitation, we did not find this pattern and differences in partner choice are more limited or we observe the mixed couples to have elevated dissolution chances. After checking for relevant background characteristics it turns out that especially for mixed couples, the chance of relationship dissolution appears to differ strongly according to relationship type.

Abstract Global investments in girls’ education have been motivated, in part, by an expectation that more-educated women will have smaller and healthier families. However, in many low- and middle-income countries, the timing of school dropout and first birth coincide, resulting in a rapid transition from the role of student to the role of mother for adolescent girls. Despite growing interest in the effects of pregnancy on levels of school dropout, researchers have largely overlooked the potential effect of adolescent childbearing on literacy and numeracy. We hypothesize that becoming a mother soon after leaving school may cause the deterioration of skills gained in school. Using longitudinal data from Bangladesh, Malawi, and Zambia, we test our hypothesis by estimating fixed-effects linear regression models to address the endogeneity in the relationship between childbearing and academic skills. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the effects of adolescent childbearing on academic skills in low- and middle-income countries. Our results indicate that among those with low levels of grade attainment, first birth has a negative effect on English literacy and numeracy. Among those with higher levels of grade attainment, we find little evidence of effects of childbearing on academic skills. Childbearing also has little effect on local language literacy. Beyond the immediate loss of English literacy and numeracy, if these skills lead to better health and more economic productivity, then adolescent childbearing may have longer-term repercussions than previously understood. In addition to ongoing efforts to increase educational attainment and school quality in low- and middle-income countries, investments are needed to strengthen the academic skills of adolescent mothers to secure the demographic and economic promise of expanded education for girls and women.

Explanations for the risks associated with premarital and nonmarital cohabitation (e.g., higher rates of breakup and divorce, lower relationship satisfaction, and greater risk for violent interaction) have focused on levels of conventionality, including attitudes about commitment to the institution of marriage. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the role of interpersonal, not institutional, commitment. In a national random sample (United States), premarital and nonmarital cohabitation were associated with lower levels of interpersonal commitment to partners, suggesting links to further understanding of risk in these relationships. Premarital cohabitation was particularly associated with less committed and less religious males. Prior findings associating cohabitation with lower levels of happiness and religiosity, and higher levels of negative interaction (for men) were replicated.

SummaryAnalysis of data from the Guyana Fertility Survey on the trends and covariates of age at first birth among various birth cohorts of women ever in union indicates that an early entry into union is associated with young age at first birth and higher number of children born. Multivariate analysis showed that women with highér education, urban residence, and entry into union at age 20 or older among younger cohorts experienced lower risks for first birth compared to others, and that young women are delaying their first birth for longer durations than older women. Work status of women before first birth and the starting age of union seem to be the two major contributory factors for age at first birth. Noticeably, the role of education has changed and is now more significant among younger cohorts than among older ones for first birth timing.

This study presents a multivariate behavioural genetic analysis of the relationship between education, intelligence and age of first birth. Analyses investigated the mediational role of education in explaining the relationship between intelligence and age of first birth at both the phenotypic and behavioural genetic level. The data come from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY), a nationally representative survey that included genetically informative full- and half-sibling pairs (n=1423 pairs). Respondents were aged 14 to 22 when contacted in 1979. Heritability estimates were 0·32, 0·50 and 0·06 for IQ, education and age of first birth, respectively. Shared environment estimates were 0·35, 0·23 and 0·20 respectively. Common genetic and shared environmental factors were substantial in explaining the relationship between intelligence and education, and also education and age of first birth. Education partially mediated the relationship between intelligence and age of first birth only in the phenotypic analyses. After considering the genetic and shared environmental factors that influence all three variables, evidence for mediation was less convincing. This pattern of results suggests that the apparent mediational role of education at the phenotypic level is in fact the result of underlying genetic and shared environmental influences that affect education, IQ and age of first birth in common.

Abstract Although a growing literature explores the relationship between migration and fertility, far less scholarship has examined how migrant childbearing varies over time, including across migrant cohorts. I extend previous research by exploring migrant-cohort differences in fertility and the role of changing composition by education and type of family migration. Using 1984–2016 German Socio-Economic Panel data, I investigate the transition into first, second, and third birth among foreign-born women in West Germany. Results from an event-history analysis reveal that education and type of family migration—including marriage migration and family reunions—contribute to differences in first birth across migrant cohorts. Specifically, more rapid entry into first birth among recent migrants from Turkey stems from a greater representation of marriage migrants across arrival cohorts, while increasing education is associated with reduced first birth propensities among recent migrants from Southern Europe. I also find variation in the risk of higher parity transitions across migrant cohorts, particularly lower third birth risks among recent arrivals from Turkey, likely a result of changing exposures within origin and destination contexts. These findings suggest that as political and socioeconomic circumstances vary within origin and destination contexts, selection, adaptation, and socialization processes jointly shape childbearing behavior.
