In oto-rhino-laryngology, cases of submandibuillar sialolithiasis are common. Submandibular sialoadentis with sialolith may cause severe complications such as deep neck abscess and sepsis. We introduce a rare case of a cervical fistula with abscess caused by submandibular sialolith. The patient had diabetes. We performed drainage of the left submandibular gland that included a Wharton duct stone and abscess by an external skin incision approach. Submandibular sialoadentis due to sialolith would likely progress to neck abscess and the formation of a neck skin fistula; moreover, the condition can be worsen by the coexistence of diabetes. This neck abscess with skin fistula could have caused potentially fatal complications such a carotid artery rupture or sepsis. In such cases the infected source should be carefully removed as soon as possible.

Schwannomas are neurogenic benign tumors originating from the myelin sheath of peripheral nerves, and hypoglossal Schwannomas account for 5% of nonvestibular ones. Extracranial localizations are substantially rare, especially those affecting exclusively the parapharyngeal space; for this reason, the retrostyloid neoformations could initially masquerade as a carotid tumor or deep organized neck abscess. The purpose of this report is to highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the correct management of differential diagnosis.

AbstractA case of a deep neck abscess caused by Salmonella enteritidis in a 29-year-old previously undiagnosed diabetic patient is reported. Review of relevant literature has shown 11 cases of Salmonella neck abscess. Predisposing conditions include immunosuppression due to any cause. Salmonella sp. should be included in the differential diagnosis of head and neck abscesses in predisposed individuals and treated accordingly.

This report aims to present a rare case of a common carotid artery (CCA) pseudoaneurysm with a concomitant internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis that were treated with a hybrid technique. This strategy included the retrograde placement of a CCA covered stent under ICA clamping followed by standardized carotid endarterectomy. The technique will be discussed and compared with other possible treatments.

The technical factors and surgical methods employed in carotid endarterectomy are controversial. In particular, whether or not to use an indwelling arterial shunt during carotid endarterectomy remains a source of conflict. We describe a rare case in which uncomplicated carotid endarterectomy was followed by distal internal carotid artery dissection and suggest that this devastating complication was due to intimal damage produced by the use of an indwelling arterial shunt.
