The genus Trichodesma (Boraginaceae: Boraginoideae) in southern Africa

Trichodesma R.Br. is a genus of about 45 species known from tropical and subtropical regions of Africa. Asia and Australia. The group comprises predominantly perennial herbs, the flowers characterized by anthers with prolonged connectives, often twisting above the thecae. and a prominent accrescent calyx. Five species and three subspecies of 7rii hodesma are currently recognized in southern Africa, with  T. angustifolium Harv. subsp. argenteum Relief A.E.van Wyk newly described. These taxa are widespread in southern Africa, occurring in various vegetation types. A key to the species, descriptions, distribution maps and illustrations of various micro- and macromorphological as well as palvnological features are provided.

The tribe Sisyphini sensu stricto Mulsant, 1842 comprises only three genera, the widespread Sisyphus Latreille, 1807 and Neosisyphus Müller, 1942, and the Mauritius endemic, Nesosisyphus Vinson, 1946. In southern Africa, Sisyphus and Neosisyphus are represented by five species groups in each genus. Together, they comprise a total of 33 valid species, of which six are new: Sisyphus auricomus sp. n; Sisyphus australis sp. n ; Sisyphus bicuariensis sp. n; Sisyphus inconspicuus sp. n; Sisyphus swazi sp. n; and Neosisyphus tembyi sp. n. A further Southern African species, Sisyphus crispatus Gory, 1833, is proposed as a nomen dubium. Sisyphus natalensis Balthasar, 1968 (syn. n), and Sisyphus bornemisszanus Endrödi, 1983 (pars) (syn. n) are made synonyms of Sisyphus sordidus Boheman, 1857. Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for Sisyphus costatus (Thunberg, 1818); Sisyphus seminulum Gerstaecker, 1871; Sisyphus nanniscus Péringuey, 1901; Sisyphus transvaalensis Péringuey 1901; Neosisyphus spinipes (Thunberg, 1818) and Neosisyphus barbarossa (Wiedemann, 1823). Diagnoses, photographs of habitus and male genitalia, lists of examined material and distribution maps are presented for all species. An identification key to the southern African sisyphine species is provided.

Trisetopsis, a genus of temperate C3 grasses, extends from the Arabian Peninsula southwards along the African mountains (temperate Afromontane Region) to sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar, with a centre of diversity in southern Africa. A taxonomic treatment of Trisetopsis in the Flora of southern Africa (FSA) region is presented. The proposed classification is based on existing and comparative evidence derived from macromorphology, micromorphology, leaf anatomy, DNA sequences and geographical distribution. Fourteen species of Trisetopsis are recognized in the FSA region, all of them endemic to the region. Five of the species are rare; based on IUCN Red List categories and criteria, three species are considered “Vulnerable”, one as “Endangered, and one as “Critically Endangered” and probably “Extinct”. Improved and emended species descriptions, a key to the species, updated distribution maps and illustrations, especially of the spikelets, are provided. Lectotypes are designated for the names Avenastrum longum var. grande and Avena longa (basionym of Trisetopsis longa).

This paper demonstrates the flora, plant communities and substrates of an old solvay process spoil tip in Upper Silesia, Poland. In an area of 15 000 m<sup>2</sup> there are growing 136 vascular plant species. The flora is characterised by the preponderance of Asteraceae - species and long-lived perennial herbs, many of them coming from meadows and grasslands. Ninety-five percent of species are apophytes despite the anthropogenic origin of the site. A majority of species are associated with moderately dry, base-rich soils with low or moderate levels of nitrogen. The site is shown to be an important refuge for some protected species, montane species and other elements uncommon in the local flora. An analysis of a series of samples used a methodology based on the assessment of percentage cover of particular species and multivariate analysis based on TWINSPAN. Both suggested a relatively high overall similarity between the samples with minor variations associated with moister substrates.Elemental analysis and pH determinations of soil samples associated with the relevés revealed a narrow range of pH and an absence of any strong concentrations of heavy metals. A redundancy analysis of the soil-plant relationships suggested that the strongest trend of differentiation was most closely associated with a phosphate gradient, and the next strongest was pH and possibly waterlogging. The most species-rich vegetation was associated with low phosphate and high pH levels. The results could be interpreted to suggest that processes of soil development and plant succession are slow but nevertheless perceptible, with implications for future loss of diversity. The vegetation constitutes an assemblage essentially of one type showing only weak relationships with described vegetation types such as <em>Molinio-Arrhenatheretea</em> meadow, <em>Festuco-Brometea</em> grassland and <em>Caricetalia davallianae</em> mire. The results also suggest that the vegetation of the site is of considerable value for nature conservation. The site should be protected and be the subject of further research.

Recently Brenan. in Kew Bull. 21 : 477-480 (1968). upheld  Acacia brevispica Harms and A. schweinfurthii Brenan Exell as distinct species and recognized two subspecies within A. brevispica. These conclusions differ from earlier results published by Ross Gordon- Gray in Brittonia 18: 44-63 (1966). Consequently it was considered necessary to re-examine these species in preparation for the account of  Acacia for the Flora of Southern Africa. Distribution maps of the two species are provided and the differences between the species tabulated and discussed. Despite certain difficulties in Natal. Brenan's taxonomic conclusions are adopted. A map showing the distribution of  A. schweinfurthii and  A. brevispica subsp. dregeana in Natal is provided and a selection of Natal specimens cited.

Family Tecophilaeaceae subfam. Tecophilaeoideae is revised for the Flora of southern Africa region, with the inclusion of the tropical Walleria mackenzii J.Kirk for completeness. The genera Cyanella Royen ex L. (9 spp.), Eremiolirion J.C.Manning F.Forest (1 sp.) and Walleria J.Kirk (3 spp.) are treated, with keys to the genera, species and subspecies; and full descriptions and distribution maps. A formal infrageneric classification is proposed for Cyanella, in which sect. Trigella (Salisb.) Pax K.Hoffm. is revived for the species with a 3 + 3 arrangement of stamens. The new species, C. marlothii J.C.Manning Goldblatt, is described from the Richtersveld; and C. pentheri Zahlbr. is resuscitated from the synonomy of C. hyacinthioides Royen ex L. Pink-flowered plants of normally yellow-flowered C. lutea have a separate geographical distribution and are recognized as subsp. rosea (Eckl. ex Baker) J.C.Manning Goldblatt.

Kanakomyrtus (Myrtaceae) is a newly described genus endemic to New Caledonia. Kanakomyrtus myrtopsidoides, the generic type, is transferred from Eugenia. Five new species are described: K. mcphersonii, K. revoluta, K. dawsoniana, K. prominens, and K. longipetiolata. The genus occurs in forests at elevations between 500–1,600 m on the relatively mesic windward side of the Grande Terre. It is distinct from other baccate genera of Myrtaceae by a combination of linear stylar lobes, densely glandular stamens and stigmas, and a short but densely hoary indumentum that is brownish when dry. The thinly membranous partitions that partially extend between the seeds of some species suggest a close relationship to Archirhodomyrtus and some species traditionally placed in Rhodomyrtus and Octamyrtus. Four of the six species have unisexual flowers, but much additional field work is needed to assess the reproductive biology of the genus. Following IUCN guidelines, four species are proposed as either Endangered or Critically Endangered, whereas the remaining species are considered Vulnerable and of Low Concern. Species descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps, and keys to species of the genus and related taxa of baccate Myrtaceae from New Caledonia are included.

There are 171 species of robber flies recorded for Wyoming, USA, including three newly described species (Cyrtopogon hollandi sp. nov., C. martini sp. nov., and Stenopogon graminis sp. nov.) in this paper, in 10 of the 14 recognized subfamilies. The largest numbers of species belong to the Asilinae (61) followed by Brachyrhopalinae (35), Laphriinae (23), Stenopogoninae (19), Dasypogoninae (9), Stichopogoninae (9), Leptogastrinae (8), Dioctriinae (3), Willistonininae (3), and Trigonomiminae (1). The most species (136) occur in one or more of the shrub/grassland vegetation types, with fewer species occurring in the grassland vegetation types (130), the forest (78 species) and in the shrub (24 species) vegetation types. Keys to subfamilies, genera and species with brief species descriptions are provided; the ecology and ethology of individual species are discussed.

The genus Synaxis is synonymized with Tetracis. The thirteen North American species in genus Tetracis (some formerly in Synaxis) are discussed, including descriptions of three new species from western North America: Tetracis australis, T. montanaria, T. pallidata. Two additional species, “Synaxis” triangulata and “S.” brunneilinearia are excluded. A key to species, descriptions, check list, illustrations of adults and genitalia, and distribution maps are included. The formerly presumed lost types of the taxa aurantiacaria, cervinaria, and jubararia were located and are illustrated.

 The genus Seriphium, previously treated as an informal group within Stoebe, is resurrected on the grounds of flower morphology, pollen morphology, and basal resin cavities in the leaves, as well as geographical distribution. The generic circumscriptions of Stoebe (with 18 accepted species) and Seriphium (with 9 accepted species) are revised in southern Africa and neighbouring islands, and five new combinations are proposed in Seriphium. Elytropappus ruscianus, Stoebe burchellii and St. vulgaris are listed as new synonyms in Seriphium, whilst Stoebe copholepis, St. ensori, St. sphaerocephala, St. humilis, St. salteri and St. bruniades are new synonyms in Stoebe. Keys, descriptions and distribution maps are provided for all species.

The complexity of the evolutionary history of Senecio is reflected in its conflicted taxonomy. Within this genus, Senecio section Crociseris (Compositae, Senecioneae), a group of perennial herbs distributed in Europe, western and Central Asia, and northwestern Africa, was not fully revised. A worldwide revision of this section recognizing 28 species and eight subspecies is presented here. The main morphological characters revealed as useful for distinguishing between species are the number and shape of supplementary and involucral bracts, synflorescence architecture, indumentum, and the shape and size of leaves and achenes. In this new taxonomic treatment S. provincialis and S. lagascanus have been segregated from S. doronicum, within which three subspecies are recognized (S. doronicum subsp. orientalis is validly published herein). On the other hand, S. ruthenensis from France and S. lusitanicus from Portugal have been synonymized to S. lagascanus, as well as S. ovatifolius, S. pisidicus, and S. tmoleus from Anatolia to S. kolenatianus, S. olympicus, and S. castagneanus respectively, S. bertramii from Lebanon to S. cilicius, and S. delbesianus from Syria to S. racemosus subsp. racemosus. Sixty eight names are lectotypified, the names S. barrelieri, S. pyrenaicus, and S. scopolii are neotypified, and one epitype is designated for the name S. perralderianus. Descriptions and distribution maps are provided for all the species included, as well as an identification key. Nine species are illustrated for the first time.
