SUMMARY Objectives: The case report describes a minimally invasive, multidisciplinary approach to a single discolored anterior tooth, with internal bleaching using traditional Japanese paper (Washi), a gingivoplasty with a three-dimensional (3D) printed surgical guide, and ultrathin feldspathic porcelain veneers. Clinical consideration: The patient’s primary concern was improving her smile. After clinical evaluation, internal tooth bleaching for the discolored tooth and gingivoplasty with restoration of the maxillary anterior six teeth and first premolars was recommended. The internal tooth whitening was accomplished with sodium perborate mixed with 30% hydrogen peroxide impregnated in Washi and sealed in the root canal with glass ionomer. Once the tooth bleaching was completed, the 3D printed surgical guide was placed in the patient’s maxillary anterior region and used to guide soft tissue recontouring. After 6 months, ultrathin feldspathic porcelain veneers were placed. Conclusion: Well-planned restorative procedures combining internal tooth bleaching using Washi, gingivoplasty performed with electrosurgery using a 3D printed surgical guide, and ultrathin feldspathic porcelain veneers can achieve the desired results in the esthetic zone and remain successful for 4 years.

Abstract Background The accuracy of computer-assisted biopsies at the lower jaw was compared to the accuracy of freehand biopsies. Methods Patients with a bony lesion of the lower jaw with an indication for biopsy were prospectively enrolled. Two customized bone models per patient were produced using a 3D printer. The models of the lower jaw were fitted into a phantom head model to simulate operation room conditions. Biopsies for the study group were taken by means of surgical guides and freehand biopsies were performed for the control group. Results The deviation of the biopsy axes from the planning was significantly less when using templates. It turned out to be 1.3 ± 0.6 mm for the biopsies with a surgical guide and 3.9 ± 1.1 mm for the freehand biopsies. Conclusions Surgical guides allow significantly higher accuracy of biopsies. The preliminary results are promising, but clinical evaluation is necessary.

Abstract Postoperative adhesions are scar tissue that form between internal organs after surgery, leading to devastating life-long complications. Current adhesion barriers used clinically are solid sheets which can only be applied in open surgeries through large incisions. We have developed a material which can be applied as a liquid in minimally invasive surgeries which transitions into a solid thin film barrier upon contact with warm tissue. However, to be effective, it must be sprayed, and spraying a viscous liquid consistently is challenging. We proposed using a gas dispersant to facilitate aerosolization. In this study, we compared a commercially available nozzle without gas dispersant to a custom 3D printed nozzle with gas dispersant. For comparison, we measured both spray pattern and stiffness of the resulting gel. We found that when sprayed with gas dispersant, the spray pattern covered a larger area, and the resulting gel was stiffer than when sprayed without gas dispersant.
