Let Σ represent the class of analytic functions(1)which are regular, except for a simple pole at infinity, and univalent in |z| > 1 and map |z| > 1 onto a domain whose complement is starlike with respect to the origin. Further let Σ- 1 be the class of inverse functions of Σ which at w = ∞ have the expansion(2).In this paper we develop variational formulas for functions of the classes Σ and Σ- 1 and obtain certain properties of functions that extremalize some rather general functionals pertaining to these classes. In particular, we obtain precise upper bounds for |b2| and |b3|. Precise upper bounds for |b1|, |b2| and |b3| are given by Springer (8) for the general univalent case, provided b0 =0.

Letbe a function regular for | z | < 1. With the hypotheses f(0) = 0 andfor some positive constant α, Cartwright(1) has deduced upper bounds for |f(z) | in the unit circle. Three cases have arisen and according as (1) holds with α < 1, α = 1 or α > 1, the bounds on each circle | z | = r are given respectively byK(α) being a constant which depends only on the corresponding value of α which occurs in (1). We shall always use the symbols K and A to represent constants dependent on certain parameters such as α, not necessarily having the same value at each occurrence.

This paper considers the radial and nontangential growth of a function f given bywhere α>0 and μ is a complex-valued Borel measure on the unit circle. The main theorem shows how certain local conditions on μ near eiθ affect the growth of f(z) as z→eiθ in Stolz angles. This result leads to estimates on the nontangential growth of f where exceptional sets occur having zero β-capacity.

Given a polynomially bounded multisequence {fm}, where m = (m1, …, mk) ∈ ℤk, we will consider 2k power series in exp(iz1), …, exp(izk), each representing a holomorphic function within its domain of convergence. We will consider this same multisequence as a linear functional on a class of functions defined on the k-dimensional torus by a Fourier series, , with the proper convergence criteria. We shall discuss the relationships that exist between the linear functional properties of the multisequence and the analytic continuation of the holomorphic functions. With this approach we show that a necessary and sufficient condition that the multisequence be given by a polynomial is that each of the power series represents, up to a unit factor, the same function that is entire in the variables

AbstractIn this paper we determine the lower bound on |z| = r < 1 for the functional Re{αp(z) + β zp′(z)/p(z)}, α ≧0, β ≧ 0, over the class Pk (A, B). By means of this result, sharp bounds for |F(z)|, |F',(z)| in the family and the radius of convexity for are obtained. Furthermore, we establish the radius of starlikness of order β, 0 ≦ β < 1, for the functions F(z) = λf(Z) + (1-λ) zf′ (Z), |z| < 1, where ∞ < λ <1, and .

Let f be a continuous real valued function defined on [−1, 1] and let En(f) denote the degree of best uniform approximation to f by algebraic polynomial of degree at most n. The supremum norm on [a, b] is denoted by ∥.∥[a, b] and the polynomial of degree n of best uniform approximation is denoted by Pn. We find a class of functions f such that there exists a fixed a ∈(−1, 1) with the following propertyfor some positive constants C and N independent of n. Moreover the sequence is optimal in the sense that if is replaced by then the above inequality need not hold no matter how small C > 0 is chosen.We also find another, more general class a functions f for whichinfinitely often.

The author has proved that an outer function in the Hardy space H1 can be factored into a product in which one factor is strongly outer and the other is the sum of two inner functions. In an endeavor to understand better the latter factor, we introduce a class of functions containing sums of inner functions as a special case. Using it, we describe the solutions of extremal problems in the Hardy spaces Hp for 1≦p<∞.
