AbstractLet G be a locally compact second countable group, let X be a locally compact second countable Hausdorff space, and view C(X, T) as a trivial G-module. For G countable discrete abelian, we construct an isomorphism between the Moore cohomology group Hn(G, C(X, T)) and the direct sum Ext(Hn-1(G), Ȟl(βX, Ζ)) ⊕ C(X, Hn(G, T)); here Ȟ1 (βX, Ζ) denotes the first Čech cohomology group of the Stone-Čech compactification of X, βX, with integer coefficients. For more general locally compact second countable groups G, we discuss the relationship between the Moore group H2(G, C(X, T)), the set of exterior equivalence classes of element-wise inner actions of G on the stable continuous trace C*-algebra C0(X) ⊗ 𝒦, and the equivariant Brauer group BrG(X) of Crocker, Kumjian, Raeburn, and Williams. For countable discrete abelian G acting trivially on X, we construct an isomorphism is the group of equivalence classes of principal Ĝ bundles over X first considered by Raeburn and Williams.

There are various generalizations of Hopf’s brilliant theorem, which may be stated, as newly formulated by Alexandroff; all the homotopy classes of the mappings of a compact Hausdorff space X with dim X≦n into an n-sphere Sn are in a (1-1) -correspondence with the elements of the n-dimensional Čech cohomology group Hn(X) with integer coefficients.

Abstract For a locally compact Hausdorff space X and a C*-algebra A with only finitely many closed ideals, we discuss a characterization of closed ideals of C0(X,A) in terms of closed ideals of A and a class of closed subspaces of X. We further use this result to prove that a closed ideal of C0(X)⊗minA is a finite sum of product ideals. We also establish that for a unital C*-algebra A, C0(X,A) has the centre-quotient property if and only if A has the centre-quotient property. As an application, we characterize the closed Lie ideals of C0(X,A) and identify all the closed Lie ideals of HC0(X)⊗minB(H), H being a separable Hilbert space.

AbstractIn this paper, we extend the definition of property T and strong property T to general C*-algebras (not necessarily unital). We show that if an inclusion pair of locally compact groups (G,H) has property T, then (C*(G), C*(H)) has property T. As a partial converse, if T is abelian and C*(G) has property T, then T is compact. We also show that if Ω is a first countable locally compact Hausdorff space, then C0(Ω) has (strong) property T if and only if Ω is discrete. Furthermore, the non-unital C*-algebra $c_0(\mathbb{Z}^n)\rtimes SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ has strong property T when n ≥ 3. We also give some equivalent forms of strong property T, which are new even in the unital case.

We study adjointable, bounded operators on the direct sum of two copies of the standard Hilbert C*-module over a unital C*-algebra A that are given by upper triangular 2 by 2 operator matrices. Using the definition of A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operators given in [3], [4], we obtain conditions relating semi-A-Fredholmness of these operators and that of their diagonal entries, thus generalizing the results in [1], [2]. Moreover, we generalize the notion of the spectra of operators by replacing scalars by the elements in the C*-algebra A: Considering these new spectra in A of bounded, adjointable operators on Hilbert C*-modules over A related to the classes of A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operators, we prove an analogue or a generalized version of the results in [1] concerning the relationship between the spectra of 2 by 2 upper triangular operator matrices and the spectra of their diagonal entries.

The present work is a sequel to our previous article (10) with the same title. The major theme remains the study of the relationship between tensor products of spaces of functions and vector-valued measures on a space S. In (10) S was a compact Hausdorff space. Here we extend our considerations to locally compact Hausdorff spaces. B(S) still stands for the Borel class of S.Three types of vector-valued measures m : B(5) → E, E a Banach space, are considered here (§3), namely, weak*, weak, and strong vector measures, but the concepts of weak and strong measures coincide. This result is due to Bartle, Dunford, and Schwartz (1) for abstract vector measures, i.e. defined on an abstract σ-algebra of sets.

Let G be a separable locally compact group which admits a non-trivial compact normal subgroup. It is shown that the group C*-algebra C*(G) of G may be decomposed as a direct sum of ideals whose structure is determined up to *-isomorphism. Applications are given to Type 1, [FD]− groups; in particular it is shown that the group C*-algebra of such a group is a direct sum of homogeneous C*-algebras.

Many commutative semisimple Banach algebras B including B = C (X), X compact, and B = L1 (G), G locally compact, have the property that every homomorphism from B into C1[0, 1] is compact. In this paper we consider this property for uniform algebras. Several examples of homomorphisms from somewhat complicated algebras of analytic functions to C1[0, 1] are shown to be compact. This, together with the fact that every homomorphism from the disc algebra and from the algebra H∞ (∆), ∆ = unit disc, to C1[0, 1] is compact, led to the conjecture that perhaps every homomorphism from a uniform algebra into C1[0, 1] is compact. The main result to which we devote the second half of this paper, is to construct a compact Hausdorff space X, a uniformly closed subalgebra [Formula: see text] of C (X), and an arc ϕ: [0, 1] → X such that the transformation T defined by Tf = f ◦ ϕ is a (bounded) homomorphism of [Formula: see text] into C1[0, 1] which is not compact.

We discuss some recent developments that illustrate the interplay between the theory of crossed products of continuous trace C*-algebras and algebraic topology, summarizing results relating topological invariants coming from the theory of fiber bundles to continuous trace C*-algebras and their automorphism groups and the structure of the associated crossed product C*-algebras. This survey article starts from the classical theory of Dixmier, Douady, and Fell, and discusses the more recent work of Echterhoff, Phillips, Raeburn, Rosenberg, and Williams, among others. The topological invariants involved are Čech cohomology, the cohomology of locally compact groups with Borel cochains of C. Moore, and the recently introduced equivariant cohomology theory of Crocker, Kumjian, Raeburn and Williams.

AbstractLet A be a C*-algebra and K the C*-algebra of all compact operators on a countably infinite dimensional Hilbert space. In this note, we shall show that there is an isomorphism of a semigroup of equivalence classes of certain partial automorphisms of A ⊗ K onto a semigroup of equivalence classes of certain countably generated A-A-Hilbert bimodules.

Let X be a metric space. Assume either that X is locally compact or that X has no more than countably many isolated points. It is proved that if F is a nowhere dense subset of X, then it is regularly nowhere dense (in the sense of Katětov) and hence is contained in the topological boundary of some regular-closed subset of X. This result is used to obtain new properties of the remote points of the Stone-Čech compactification of a metric space without isolated points.Let βX denote the Stone-Čech compactification of the completely regular Hausdorff space X. Fine and Gillman [3] define a point p of βX to be remote if p is not in the βX-closure of a discrete subset of X.
