Internationally educated nurses (IEN) are a group who reflect Canada’s diverse population as a result of rising immigration trends. There is increasing diversity of the general population in Canada and health service disparities exist. Reducing these disparities among the healthcare workforce and the patients they care for is important to meet language and other cultural needs of patients from different ethnic backgrounds. This article describes a study that examined internationally educated nurses’ transition experiences in the field of nursing with the objective of describing their unique contributions to the patient care experience. A review of the literature provides background information, followed by the study methods, findings, and discussion. Descriptive phenomenology guided this qualitative study that included 11 participants. Findings from this study illustrate how IENs perceive themselves as an asset to nursing and patient care. Implications for the future of nursing education, practice, research, and administration are offered. Healthcare providers that reflect the diversity of Canada’s population and can offer unique cultural perspective have potential to improve the patient experience during a hospital stay.

The nursing process is regarded as a systematic approach in which professional nurses use problem-solving to identify, plan and implement nursing interventions to enhance quality patient care. The steps of the nursing process include assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. However, nurses’ effective and efficient use of the nursing process steps in public hospitals still poses a challenge due to several factors. The current study is significant to nursing practice as the nursing process remains a standard of nursing practice for hospitals to provide quality patient care. The purpose of the study was to explore professional nurses’ use of the assessment and implementation steps of the nursing process at selected public hospitals in the Vhembe District, Limpopo, South Africa. A qualitative, phenomenological, descriptive, explorative and contextual research design was used. Non-probability purposive sampling was used to select professional nurses who were using the nursing process in the nursing care units until data saturation was reached with 13 participants. The data was collected using semi-structured one-on-one interviews using an interview guide, and then analysed using Tesch’s open-coding method where themes and sub-themes emerged. The study found that the participants’ initial assessment of patients during admission is an achievable performance, while implementation of the set nursing intervention is still a challenge on different levels. It is recommended that a problem-based learning approach be made a compulsory practical teaching method in order to equip nurses with the knowledge of the nursing process at all nursing education institutions.

ABSTRACT Objective – The study aims to formulate a policy direction (through a model) among Philippine level 3 local government hospitals based on the predictors of Quality Patient Care (QPC). The predictors are cost-effectiveness, utilization of materials, services by human resources, accessibility, leadership and management and ethical standards as independent variables in relation to the dependent variable which is QPC. Methodology/Technique – Survey questionnaires and interviews were conducted to patients, hospital directors, doctors, nurses, administrative and ancillary officers. The study used descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential (ordinary least squares and multiple regression analysis) statistics. Findings – The study revealed that the utilization of materials has the most influence/effect on QPC wherein an increase in 1% of materials brought about an increase of 0.55 % in QPC. Likewise, accessibility brought about an increase in QPC by 0.42 %; and services rendered by human resources brought about an increase in QPC by 0.05 %. Novelty – This is the first study of Philippine Level 3 local government hospitals which aims to formulate a policy direction (through a model) based on the predictors of QPC. This can be used by the national and local governments in devising policies to improve healthcare, particularly in the hospital industry. BACKGROUND In nursing education and practice, we prepare nurses on topics such as patient care, pathophysiology, pharmacology, nursing leadership, and nursing competencies. Unfortunately, we may be missing the mark when it comes to integrating these topics and applying them to situations that arise in health care such as medication misuse. Nurses work intimately with patients and can recognize potential medication misuse by reviewing medication regimens and assessing necessity of PRN patient requests. In cases where nurses suspect misuse, they may or may not feel comfortable addressing these concerns with other members of the health care team. AIMS Study aims were to assess the baseline of whether nurses are comfortable with their level of skill to recognize potential patient medication misuse and to assess nurses’ comfortability with communicating these concerns with other nurses, providers, and patients. METHODS This survey study was designed to obtain practical information about nurses understanding of misused and diverted prescription medications and level of comfort with expressing concerns about the use of central nervous system depressants to inform education, practice, and research. Three-hundred and fifty nurses at one hospital were invited to participate in an anonymous REDCap survey. RESULTS Thirty-five percent of the surveyed nurses returned the survey. Responding nurses were more comfortable sharing their own knowledge and the need for more education on the topic than they were discussing interdisciplinary communication. CONCLUSIONS Empowering nurses to communicate this knowledge with others on the health care team has major public health implications to reduce the negative outcomes of misused medications.

Ken Wilber's integral metatheory is an interpretive framework that can that be applied to the clinical practice of medicine and medical and nursing education. It offers a comprehensive view of the patient illness experience superior to current models of patient care and may provide a valuable guide for nursing and medical practice and teaching. This article seeks to explain some of the basic concepts of integral metatheory and show their potential application to practice and teaching using the current COVID-19 pandemic as an illustrative model.
