Abstract The need to modify conventional pavement rises due to high maintenance cost of the highway systems. With the continuously increased consumption, a large amount of waste glass materials is generated annually in the world. This paper aims to study the performance of pavement asphalt in which a fractional aggregate is replaced with crushed glass. In this paper, some important properties of asphalt mix, including stability, flow, specific gravity and air voids are investigated. The original sample is prepared without adding glass for different percentages of bitumen. Other samples are prepared by adding crushed glass to the mix with 5%, 10%, and 15% by aggregate weight. The results show that the properties of glass-asphalt mixture are improved in comparison with normal asphalt pavement. It is concluded that the use of waste glass in asphalt pavement is desirable.

Porous asphalts pavement arouses the attentions of the world by its good performance such as reduce the potential for hydroplaning, reduce splash and spray, improve visibility, decline traffic noise, and improve driving safety. But the void clogging lessens its durable function. So in this paper appropriate clogging agent was choose, and seepage coefficients were tested by using asphalt mixture pavement surface permeameter to simulation multi-cycle drainage clogging test. The influence of asphalt mixture design parameter such as the porosity, the maximum sizes of the aggregate, gradation and asphalt on the drainage and counter-clogging ability of porous asphalts was researched. The tests indicated that the porosity has an obvious influence on both porous asphalts’ permeable ability and counter-clogging ability. Comparing the specimen of 21% void to the ones of 16% void, the drain ability is improved 49.8%, the counter-clogging ability is improved 55.0%. The maximum sizes of the aggregate has an obvious influence on porous asphalts’ counter-clogging ability, but no an obvious influence on the drain ability. Comparing the specimen of 16mm to the 13mm, the counterclogging ability is proved 48%. PAC with the coarser graduation has a better performance on drain and counter-clogging ability. TPS modifier changes PAC little on drain and counter-clogging ability.

The effect of substitution of recycled aggregate by natural aggregate on related properties of blended aggregate (without asphalt and mineral filler) and asphalt mixture was investigated in this paper. Demolition waste obtained from Wenchuan earthquake-damaged buildings was used as recycled aggregate in AC-25 asphalt mixture. The absorption, specific gravity and strength of both blended aggregate and asphalt mixture were tested. Results indicate that fine recycled aggregate is not suitable to be used in asphalt mixture because of its high absorption. The substitution of recycled aggregate by natural limestone aggregate can decrease the asphalt absorption and increase the effective specific gravity and indirect tensile strength of asphalt mixture. The quantitative relationship between related properties of blended aggregate and asphalt mixture was obtained. It was concluded that the substitution of recycled aggregate by natural aggregate is a feasible way to use recycled aggregate in asphalt mixture.

Based on the Novachip ultra-thin layer project in the expressway, the material characteristics, mixture design and road performance of Novachip asphalt mixture are introduced. The application effect of Novachip ultra-thin layer was observed. The results show that Novachip ultra-thin layer has no obvious effect on improving the smoothness of the original road surface. Novachip ultra-thin layer has obvious effect on improving the rutting, and has a good anti-skid performance.
