Leveraging XML Technology for Web Applications

As eBooks evolve into interactive applications, our vision at Electronic Publishing Group (EPT) is to empower authors to write and deploy not only documents and eBooks but whole Web applications using widely available tools without system lock-in. We envision XML technology as open, accessible, well supported technology to be leveraged for Web applications: Information is represented and manipulated with XML technology. Data and programs are deployed on a Web server, stored in an XML database, run by XML processors (XSLT, XQuery, XProc) and accessed from XML-aware Web clients (XForms) via the HTTP protocol. We document a calendar system, CalendarX, as a case study. We illustrate our use of XML technology and the methodology we employed, drawing on ideas from Domain-Driven Design and Abstract State Machines.

Abstract This paper demonstrates the use of a real time lock-in thermography (LIT) system to non-destructively characterize thermal events prior to the failing of an integrated circuit (IC) device. A case study using a packaged IC mounted on printed circuit board (PCB) is presented. The result validated the failing model by observing the thermal signature on the package. Subsequent analysis from the backside of the IC identified a hot spot in internal circuitry sensitive to varying value of external discrete component (inductor) on PCB.

: Substantial research has been conducted to compare web servers or to compare databases, but very limited research combines the two. Node.js and Golang (Go) are popular platforms for both web and mobile application back-ends, whereas MySQL and Go are among the best open source databases with different characters. Using MySQL and MongoDB as databases, this study aims to compare the performance of Go and Node.js as web applications back-end regarding response time, CPU utilization, and memory usage. To simulate the actual web server workload, the flow of data traffic on the server follows the Poisson distribution. The result shows that the combination of Go and MySQL is superior in CPU utilization and memory usage, while the Node.js and MySQL combination is superior in response time.

Sustainable mobility issues in rural areas, compared with urban mobility issues, have so far been poorly covered in the French and European public debate. However, local mobility issues are determining factors in territorial inequalities, regional development and ecological transition. This paper is based on preliminary findings of qualitative socio-anthropological fieldwork carried out in two rural departments of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region: Drôme and Ardèche. Our objective is to highlight how the question of sustainable local mobility is linked to governance issues and multiple overlapping institutions. We argue that analyzing stakeholders’ strategies and territorial governance is key to understanding the contemporary dynamics surrounding a transition towards a more sustainable mobility in rural areas. In order to do so, we show how the debates surrounding the adoption of a law allowing for the transfer of responsibility to local authorities for the organization of mobility services reveals the complexity of local mobility governance in rural areas and provides material for the analysis of the logics of stakeholder engagement, cooperation and conflict within the field of sustainable mobility. Through the case study of the organization of a local public transport service in a rural area, we shed light on the action of multiple stakeholders and their potentially antagonistic objectives.
