This study aimed to provide information about the population structure and somatic index of Hypostomus cf. ancistroides collected from the Bonito river, located in the Ivaí river basin. The length-weight relationship was isometric for both the sexes. The length structure analysis showed that the larger individuals (from 18.1cm to 27.0cm in length) predominated, and the lowest abundances occurred at the size extremes (9.1-12cm and 27.1-30.0cm). The reproduction period occured between October and January for the females and between November and January for the males. The liver somatic index cannot be used as an indicator of the reproduction period in either of the sexes, due to no correlation between the liver somatic index and the gonad somatic index. The gonad weight exerted no influence on the monthly mean condition factor and the correlation between the condition factor and gonad somatic index was high. The condition factor could be an indicator of the reproduction period of this species.

In this study, length-weight relationship (LWR), length- length relationship (LLR) and condition factor (K) of Angora loach, Oxynoemacheilus angorae were determined. A total of 103 specimens were sampled from Kılıçözü Stream in 2014. The length and weight of specimens were ranged 3.5-9.8 cm and 0.38-6.58 g, respectively. Length-weight relationships for female, male and all samples were found as W= 0.01056.TL2.896 (r²= 0.923), W= 0.00963.TL2.940 (r²= 0.978) and W= 0.00987.TL2.929 (r²= 0.963), respectively. LWRs indicated an isometric growth in female, male and all samples. The values of Fulton’s condition factor (K) ranged from 0.699 to 1.246 for females and from 0.654 to 1.072 for males. All length-length relationships were statistically significant.

The prevalence of lip neoplasms in populations of white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) was compared among five locations in the St. Lawrence River basin, Quebec, Canada. One site in the St. Lawrence River was monitored from May 15 to October 30 for two consecutive years (1994-1995) to study the seasonal variations in the prevalence of lip neoplasms. Other sites were sampled within a few days in October 1995 or May 1996. Lesions were found in fish from four of the five sites. The prevalence at each site varied from 0 to 41.6% and, as found in the Great Lakes, was highest in fish populations from urbanized/industrialized sites. Lip neoplams were detected almost only in fish >350 mm (total length). The prevalence was slightly higher in fish captured in the spring, but the low sample size did not permit statistical detection of this seasonal variation. There was a significant positive correlation (Spearman rs = 0.83) between fish length and the prevalence and size of lesions. The prevalence was similar between sexes, and the condition factor was significantly lower in fish with papillomas from one site only. In future studies, fish size and season of capture should be taken into account to compare the prevalence of lip neoplasms of white sucker from different sites.

Four biological aspects of Schizodon nasutus in the low Sorocaba river basin, São Paulo, Brazil were analysed. These were accomplished during the year seasons. The fish diet and the feeding activity were investigated by studying the repletion index, which showed no significant differences between seasons. The food items analysed by frequency of occurrence and dominance showed a predominance of vegetable items in the diet. The reproduction, analysed by using the gonadosomatic index, indicated that the reproductive period occurs during the summer period when temperatures are higher and rainfalls are more intense. The amount of accumulated fat and condition factor varied according to reproduction, especially for females.

Este estudo objetiva avaliar o fator de condição (K) de cinco espécies de peixes (Serrasalmus rhombeus, Psectrogaster amazonica, Loricaria cataphracta, Panaque nigrolineatus e Squaliforma emarginata). As coletas foram realizadas utilizando-se quatro jogos de redes de malhar e cinco armadilhas, os quais foram colocados ao longo de um trecho de 1000 m das 17:00 às 7:00. Os peixes coletados foram identificados taxonomicamente, pesados (g) e medidos (comprimento standard; mm). A condição física dos peixes foi calculada pelo fator de condição (K=W/L³) e comparada por grupo de cursos de água utilizando um teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Das cinco espécies consideradas S. emarginata e P. amazonica mostraram diferenças na condição física por grupo de cursos de água. Os maiores valores de K de ambas as espécies correspondem aos espécimes localizados em cursos de água de cabeceira, enquanto que baixos valores são encontrados em peixes dos cursos de água na planície.

Abstract Aim Determine the length-weight relationship (LWR), the period of reproduction, and evaluate the variation of the condition factor (K) of Hypostomus affinis from two coastal drainages in southeastern Brazil, assessing the influence of the rainfall on these biological aspects. Methods fish were sampled quarterly between April 2008 and April 2010 in tributaries of the Doce River basin (DRB) and the Paraíba do Sul River basin (PSRB). Specimens were caught using gillnets. LWR parameters were assessed by location and sex through a t-test. We used the frequency of mature specimens (FM) to evaluate the breeding period. Both FM and K values were assessed by a sinusoidal equation. Results A total of 492 specimens was captured, of which 128 were from the Doce River basin (DRB) and 364 from the Paraíba do Sul River basin (PSRB). In both areas, specimens showed a negative allometric growth type. We collected mature specimens along the studied period in both drainages, with the highest frequency observed at the beginning of the rainy season. We found a positive correlation between the rate of matures and the local rainfall variation. The condition factor (K) was lower for specimens from DRB and did not show a cyclic trend. On the other hand, we observed a cyclic chance of the K values for the individual from the PSRB, peaking in the transitional dry-rainy period. However, it was not possible to correlate it to the rainfall variation. Conclusions LWR parameters of H. affinis were consistent with data already available in the literature. The rainfall may influence the FM but not the K values. In this case, biological characteristics such as reproduction and (or) feeding may be jointly driving a discrete variation of K values. The reduction in K values in the rainy periods suggests a remarkable energetic cost for the reproductive process. In short, our results help us to understand the life cycle of a fish species within a highly modified environment, especially by dams.

In this study, 446 fishes were analyzed: 190 Pygocentrus nattereri, 193 Serrasalmus maculatus, and 63 S. marginatus.They were captured in two bays, upper and lower Caiçara, in the upper Paraguay River basin, during one hydrological cycle from May 2008 to April 2009. Six species of Branchiura were found: Dolops bidentata, D. longicauda, Dolops sp., Argulus multicolor, A. chicomendesi, and Dipteropeltis hirundo. All fish species were infested by more than one species of Branchiura and the overall prevalence was 33.4%. The following prevalences were observed: 52.6% in P. nattereri; 20.3% in S. maculatus, and 15.8% in S. marginatus. The relative condition factor (Kn) differed significantly between parasitized and non parasitized individuals only in P. nattereri and S. maculatus. There was no correlation between Kn and abundance of parasites nor between body length (Ls) and intensity of infestation, in all three host species.

Studies on length-weight relationships are of great importance in fishery assessments. These studies are substantial to evaluate fish population dynamics, and in communion with the relative condition factor, could provide an estimation of potential acting environmental conditions. In this paper, we evaluated the length weight relationship and relative condition factor of small sized fish species. Fish were sampled quarterly between the years 2012-2013 and 2018-2020 in lagoons and tributaries of Rosana and Taquaruçu reservoirs, located at the lower Paranapanema River basin, Brazil. The standard length (SL) in millimeters and weight (W) in grams were measured, and the length-weight relationship was calculated using linear regression analysis (W = log (a) + b log (SL)). After, the relative condition factor (Kn) was calculated from the expression We = a.SLb. Thus, the length-weight relationships of 31 species were calculated in each environment considered, giving rise to 74 population allometric coefficients (b) and relative condition factors (Kn). As result, 24 b coefficients were concentrated between 2.5 and 3.5 and seven were out of the confidence interval, while the 74 Kn values demonstrated close to the central mean and not statistical different. Our results are relevant to the conservation of fish fauna, improving knowledge regarding small-sized fish and those living environment.
