Inoculating groundnut and cowpea with highly effective and competitive rhizobial strain improves nodulation. A field experiment was carried out at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture, University for Development Studies, Nyankpala, to evaluate the growth and yield responses of cowpea and groundnut to five rhizobial inoculant strains in the Guinea Savanna zone. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with eight (8) treatments replicated four (4) times. The treatments included five rhizobial inoculant strains (NC 92, KNUST 1002, KNUST 1003, KNUST 1006, and BR 3267), two N fertilizer levels (20 kg·N/ha and 40 kg·N/ha), and a control. The results showed that rhizobial inoculation and N fertilizer application increased nodulation, biomass yield, pod number, pod weight, hundred seed weight, nodule dry weight, and pod yield of groundnut compared with the control. Rhizobial inoculation averagely increased the nodulation and yield by 63 and 67%, respectively, compared with the control. Mineral N fertilizer (20 kg N/ha) on average increased the nodulation and yield by 24 and 25%, respectively, compared with the control plots. It can be recommended from this study that, in the absence of highly competitive rhizobial strains such as KNUST 1006 and NC 92 as biofertilizers for increasing the nodulation and yield of cowpea and groundnut, 20 kg·N/ha can be used for the purpose. Further research is recommended using these rhizobial strains in combination with lower rates of N fertilizers (<20 kg·ha−1).

Field experiment was conducted with the objective to determine the effect of inorganic fertilizer on soil properties, growth and yield of maize at the Teaching and Research Farm, Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Southern Guinea Savanna Zone of Nigeria, during 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons. The experimental treatments consisted of 0, 75, 150 and 300 kg ha-1 of NPK fertilizer laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated thrice. Soil samples were collected from a plough layer of 0-15 cm before and after the experiment for each cropping season according to the treatments and were analyzed for particle size distribution (PSD), soil pH, organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus, exchangeable cations and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Maize plant (growth and yield) data collected were subjected to analysis of variance after which significant means were separated using least significant difference (LSD) at P < 0.05. From the results, the effects of fertilizer treatments on soil properties investigated were significant. Application of fertilizer increased soil organic matter (SOM), TN and CEC in both cropping seasons. However, the SOM was low in all plots with no application of fertilizer. Exchangeable bases, base saturation and CEC reduced in 2017 in no fertilizer treatments but remarkably increased in 2018 due to application of 75, 150 and 300 kg ha-1. The 300 kgha-1 NPK fertilizer applications produced higher growth and yields of maize plant than remaining treatments. Similarly, soil properties (soil pH, SOM, TN and CEC) were also improved with application higher levels of mineral fertilizers for agricultural production.

Trials were conducted at Gangora in the northern Guinea Savanna ecological zone of Nigeria during the 1990 and 1991 rainy seasons. The effects of date of planting (4th,14th, 24th June and 4th  July) and levels of nitrogen fertilizer (0, 50,100, 150 and 200kg/ha) on growth components of Sorghum almum  were investigated. Planting in mid-June (14th June) in 1990 and early-July (4th July) in 1991 resulted in superior stand established and dry matter yields (p<0.05) than other dates. In mid-June and early-July planting 14 day post-planting, plant densities were 7.0 and 9.0 culms/m2 while plant heights were 20.4 and 11.3cm for the respective years. It had high tillering capacity and irrespective of date of planting (except for early-June planting) plant densities by 56 days post-planting (DPP) were greater than 100 culms/m2. Plant height at this stage were greater than 100 culms/m2 and were generally above 200cm. ninety DPP the pasture was at full bloom/hard dough stage. Dm yields then ranged from 8.0 to 11.4 tDM/ha in 1990 and 9.6 to 14.7 tDM/ha in 1991. Similarly seed yield for the respective years were 894.7 and 836.3 kg/ha. Fertilizer application (p<0.05) plant vigour, tillering and dry matter yield up to the highest N applied. In the first years trial, plant density at 35 days post-planting ranged from 12.0 to 29.0 culms/m2 while in the second year the ranged was 13.0 to 26.0 culms/m2. The corresponding values at 56 DPP (i.e 42 days following N application) were 32.0 to 81.0 and 45.0 to 101.0 culms/m2. Dry matter yields rose steadily from 6.5 to 12.5 tDM/ha in 1990 and from 8.9 to 13.6 tDM/ha in 1991 as fertilizer was increased 0 to 200 kgN/ha. Seed yield during the same period for the respective years varied from 416.0 to 753.0kg/ha. This study has shown that planting between mid-June and early-July with fertilize application of 100 to 200 khN/ha favour S. almum establishment and production in the northern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria

The farming enterprise AO Orbita annually cultivates linseed flax on an area of more than 8 thousand hectares. The areas under crop are located in the zone of temperate-ly arid steppe where resource-saving cropping technolo-gies with direct sowing and fertilization are used. The pre-vailing soils of the arable lands are leached chernozems with low nitrogen supply, increased phosphorus and high exchange potassium. To obtain a seed yield of 2.0 t ha or more, it is necessary to optimize flax nutrition during the first month of its growth. The best fertilizers for small-seeded flax are liquid nitrogen fertilizers and, first of all, urea-ammonia liquor KAS-32containing three forms of nitrogen. However, such experiments are rare in the Re-gion. This paper presents the results of the action of at sowing application of different KAS-32rates with ammoni-um sulfate dissolved init and compound NPK fertilizerDi-ammophoska by using a converted seeder. It was found that under arid conditions (the hydrothermal index over the growing season varied from 0 to 0.6 at 0.74-0.91 normal), fertilizer application contributed to greater crop density, boll formation and the formation of seed yield by 0.06-0.8 t ha above the control. The increase made 4.2-55.9%, the pro-tein content increased to 17.04-20.16% with a protein yield of 0.257-0.412 t ha as compared to 0.24 in the control; the oil content increased to 50.2-52.2% and oil yield –to 0.784-1.128 t ha as compared to 0.736 in the control. The highest indices of yield and seed quality were obtained when 50 kg ha of KAS-32 and ammonium sulfate were applied with 80 kg ha of Diammophoska compound NPK fertilizer.

Field trials were conducted in the wet seasons of 1997 and 1998 at Makurdi, Otukpo and Yandev in the Southern Guinea Savanna ecological zone of Nigeria to study the responses of ten soybean genotypes to intercropping. The experiment was laid out in a randomised complete block design. The genotypes TGX 1807-19F, NCRI-Soy2, Cameroon Late and TGX 1485-1D had the highest grain yield. All the Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) values were higher than unity, indicating that there is great advantage in intercropping maize with soybean. The yield of soybean was positively correlated with the days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, pods/plant and leaf area, indicating that an improvement in any of these traits will be reflected in an increase in seed yield. There was a significant genotype × yield × location interaction for all traits. This suggests that none of these factors acted independently. Similarly, the genotype × location interaction was more important than the genotype × year interaction for seed yield, indicating that the yield response of the ten soybean genotypes varied across locations rather than across years. Therefore, using more testing sites for evaluation may be more important than the number of years.

A field experiment was conducted for investigation of different phosphorus fertilizer sources and their importance in rapeseed farms on 2007 at Arak, Iran. Ammonium phosphate fertilizer with 50% P2O5 (APF) was as chemical phosphorus sources with 3 rates of application and Phosphor solublizing bacteria (PSB) was as biological phosphorus surcease in 4 levels. Experiment was factorial arrangement in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. APF levels were control (AP0), 125kg/ha APF (AP1) and 250kg/ha (AP2) application and PSB levels were, control (PSB0), PSB at sowing time only (PSB1), PSB as top dress fertilizer after over wintering only (PSB2) and PSB at dual fertilizing in sowing time and also after over wintering (PSB3). The statistical analyses were showed that the PSB3 treatment was a great treatment for increasing seed yield. The heist rate of seed yield was recorded at 9.9t/ha under dual fertilizing in sowing time and after rosette over wintering stage. The interaction effects of phosphorus solublizing bacteria and ammonium phosphate fertilizer application had not significant effect on plant height, biomass yield, number of silique per plant, seed oil percent and seed yield. Interaction effects of phosphorus solublizing bacteria and ammonium phosphate fertilizer application were significant for plant tissues phosphorus content.
