Teachers who continually engage in cycles of research may be characterized as having a stance of inquiry: They continually reflect on their past teaching, ask themselves questions to problematize their current practices, and collect and analyze data to inform future teaching practices. We guided 154 mathematics teachers, distributed across 6 cohorts, in conducting classroom research projects. Our purposes and expectations as teacher educators have become more clearly defined and articulated based on our reflections on 6 iterations of teacher research. Repeatedly, we have adjusted how we facilitated the design and implementation of the projects to improve the quality of teachers' research. Over time, we have come to understand teacher research as a way of helping teachers develop a stance of inquiry toward mathematical content, students' mathematical understandings, and productive mathematical teaching practices rather than as merely a culminating project for a master's degree.

The culminating project in completing a doctorate in education is the preparation and final defense of the dissertation. Specifically in educational administration and leadership, the student will have exerted hours of energy participating in course work, internships as well as in written and oral comprehensive examinations.By the time a student begins to prepare a dissertation proposal, hundreds of hours have been invested in academic endeavors. The student is well-versed in a variety of theoretical constructs that include leadership, organization, management, experimental design, statistics, law, finance, evaluation, and many other areas. The task remains to utilize the accumulated knowledge to successfully develop and complete the proposal and dissertation.Academic knowledge is not sufficient to prepare the dissertation. A number of other factors must be included and considered in the development and successful completion of the dissertation. The formula for success includes both internal and external factors. The internal factors include goal setting, listening, writing strategy, benchmarking, confidence, flexibility, a positive disposition, discipline, adaptability, resiliency, humor, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. The external factors include time, family support, supervisor/institutional consideration, and advisor motivation.

Geomezoo. “If ever you visit a Geomezoo, you'll find it Jots of fun to do; because all the animals you will see, have come from the land of geometry.” This poem is the creation of sixth-grade students who were involved in a geometry unit at the Clifton Middle School in Houston, Texas. The purpose of the Geomezoo unit is to introduce geometric concepts so students are aware of geometric shapes and figures in everyday life. After geometric shapes and figures are defined and introduced, the students identify them in everyday objects. For the culminating project, students design an animal using geometric figures. The animals are 3-D with all parts labeled as to the geometric figures used.
