Purpose Technology makes knowledge management easier. Knowledge sharing is essential for organizational development. Job satisfaction fosters knowledge sharing. Hence, this study aims to develop an understanding of the mutual relationship between knowledge sharing and job satisfaction when both are predicted by information technology (IT)-competency dimensions such as IT-operations, IT-knowledge and IT-infrastructure in the context of company performance. Design/methodology/approach The results were achieved based on the examination of 910 Polish knowledge workers with different roles and experiences across various sectors. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling method. Findings The findings suggest that the company’s IT-competency drives job satisfaction and knowledge sharing more strongly for IT industry knowledge workers than for other industries. Also, a stronger mediation function of knowledge sharing and job satisfaction is observed for IT-operations when the IT industry is controlled. Originality/value The main value of the study is the empirical evidence that the influence of a particular IT-competency dimension varies for industries when it comes to job satisfaction and knowledge sharing processes.

The information technology (IT) industry has come to the forefront for economic development of several cities in developing countries such as India and China. Looking at the success of the IT industry in these countries, an argument has emerged that development of such industry in South African cities can revitalize their economy. Therefore, the study examined the potential of development of the IT industry in a South African city by using the case study of a largely service-oriented city—Bloemfontein. A survey research method and system dynamics modeling approach were used. Findings suggest that the city has the potential to emerge as an IT industrial city, however, there exist challenges with regards to infrastructure such as housing, built up space, energy, and attracting the knowledge workers to the city. Appropriate policy interventions to reinforce these infrastructures, which can assist to attract the knowledge workers, will enable enhancement in the earning from the IT industry. Also, the development of the IT industry will strengthen the housing and built up infrastructure for the IT industry as well as enhance the number of knowledge workers in the city.

Be it industry or academia, Internet of the Things (IoT) has become buzzword today. Everyone is expecting a system of gadgets controlled by web without human intervention. The concept has opened many possibilities and a fear of failure too. All over the world the research is going on and few organizations have already started implementing the concept at a small level. But the available research is still immature and undirectional. The area is very young, the research too. Hence there is a need to develop an IoT architecture which is universally acceptable by various IoT objects as well as server.  To facilitate with the need, the paper presents a novel IOT architecture. In addition, the interaction of IoTobjects with each other has been discussed alongwith connection of a server’s infrastructure with another server’s infrastructure through API gateway.
