International audience A Weyl arrangement is the arrangement defined by the root system of a finite Weyl group. When a set of positive roots is an ideal in the root poset, we call the corresponding arrangement an ideal subarrangement. Our main theorem asserts that any ideal subarrangement is a free arrangement and that its exponents are given by the dual partition of the height distribution, which was conjectured by Sommers-Tymoczko. In particular, when an ideal subarrangement is equal to the entire Weyl arrangement, our main theorem yields the celebrated formula by Shapiro, Steinberg, Kostant, and Macdonald. The proof of the main theorem is classification-free. It heavily depends on the theory of free arrangements and thus greatly differs from the earlier proofs of the formula. Un arrangement de Weyl est défini par l’arrangement d’hyperplans du système de racines d’un groupe de Weyl fini. Quand un ensemble de racines positives est un idéal dans le poset de racines, nous appelons l’arrangement correspondant un sous-arrangement idéal. Notre théorème principal affirme que tout sous-arrangement idéal est un arrangement libre et que ses exposants sont donnés par la partition duale de la distribution des hauteurs, ce qui avait été conjecturé par Sommers-Tymoczko. En particulier, quand le sous-arrangement idéal est égal à l’arrangement de Weyl, notre théorème principal donne la célèbre formule par Shapiro, Steinberg, Kostant et Macdonald. La démonstration du théorème principal n’utilise pas de classification. Elle dépend fortement de la théorie des arrangements libres et diffère ainsi grandement des démonstrations précédentes de la formule.

Abstract For a Weyl group W of rank r, the W-Catalan number is the number of antichains of the poset of positive roots, and the W-Narayana numbers refine the W-Catalan number by keeping track of the cardinalities of these antichains. The W-Narayana numbers are symmetric – that is, the number of antichains of cardinality k is the same as the number of cardinality $r-k$ . However, this symmetry is far from obvious. Panyushev posed the problem of defining an involution on root poset antichains that exhibits the symmetry of the W-Narayana numbers. Rowmotion and rowvacuation are two related operators, defined as compositions of toggles, that give a dihedral action on the set of antichains of any ranked poset. Rowmotion acting on root posets has been the subject of a significant amount of research in the recent past. We prove that for the root posets of classical types, rowvacuation is Panyushev’s desired involution.

AbstractLet $$\varGamma $$ Γ be the graph on the roots of the $$E_8$$ E 8 root system, where any two distinct vertices e and f are connected by an edge with color equal to the inner product of e and f. For any set c of colors, let $$\varGamma _c$$ Γ c be the subgraph of $$\varGamma $$ Γ consisting of all the 240 vertices, and all the edges whose color lies in c. We consider cliques, i.e., complete subgraphs, of $$\varGamma $$ Γ that are either monochromatic, or of size at most 3, or a maximal clique in $$\varGamma _c$$ Γ c for some color set c, or whose vertices are the vertices of a face of the $$E_8$$ E 8 root polytope. We prove that, apart from two exceptions, two such cliques are conjugate under the automorphism group of $$\varGamma $$ Γ if and only if they are isomorphic as colored graphs. Moreover, for an isomorphism f from one such clique K to another, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for f to extend to an automorphism of $$\varGamma $$ Γ , in terms of the restrictions of f to certain special subgraphs of K of size at most 7.

AbstractLet R be a root system (in the sense of Bourbaki) in a finite dimensional real inner product space V. A subset P ⊂ R is closed if α, β ∊ P and α + β ∊ R imply that α + β ∊ P. In this paper we shall classify, up to conjugacy by the Weyl group W of R, all closed sets P ⊂ R such that R\P is also closed. We also show that if θ:R —> R′ is a bijection between two root systems such that both θ and θ-1 preserve closed sets, and if R has at most one irreducible component of type A1, then θ is an isomorphism of root systems.

International audience We present a family of simplicial complexes called \emphmulti-cluster complexes. These complexes generalize the concept of cluster complexes, and extend the notion of multi-associahedra of types ${A}$ and ${B}$ to general finite Coxeter groups. We study combinatorial and geometric properties of these objects and, in particular, provide a simple combinatorial description of the compatibility relation among the set of almost positive roots in the cluster complex. Nous présentons une famille de complexes simpliciaux appelés \emphcomplexes des multi-amas. Ces complexes généralisent le concept de complexes des amas et étendent la notion de multi-associaèdre de type ${A}$ et ${B}$ aux groupes de Coxeter finis. Nous étudions des propriétés combinatoires et géométriques de ces objets et, en particulier nous fournissons une description combinatoire simple de la relation de compatibilité sur l'ensemble des racines presque positives du complexe des amas.

A main emphasis is placed on the height and maximum degree of several kinds of random trees. We also provide exponential tail estimates for the height distribution of scale-free trees.

We construct a linear representation of the CGW algebra of type Dn. This representation has degree n2 - n, the number of positive roots of a root system of type Dn. We show that the representation is generically irreducible, but that when the parameters of the algebra are related in a certain way, it becomes reducible. As a representation of the Artin group of type Dn, this representation is equivalent to the faithful linear representation of Cohen–Wales. We give a reducibility criterion for this representation as well as a conjecture on the semisimplicity of the CGW algebra of type Dn. Our proof is computer-assisted using Mathematica.

We study intersection numbers of invariant divisors in the toric manifold associated with the fan determined by the collection of Weyl chambers for each root system of classical type and of exceptional type $G_2$. We give a combinatorial formula for intersection numbers of certain subvarieties which are naturally indexed by elements of the Weyl group. These numbers describe the ring structure of the cohomology of the toric manifold.

International audience Let $W \ltimes L$ be an irreducible affine Weyl group with Coxeter complex $\Sigma$, where $W$ denotes the associated finite Weyl group and $L$ the translation subgroup. The Steinberg torus is the Boolean cell complex obtained by taking the quotient of $\Sigma$ by the lattice $L$. We show that the ordinary and flag $h$-polynomials of the Steinberg torus (with the empty face deleted) are generating functions over $W$ for a descent-like statistic first studied by Cellini. We also show that the ordinary $h$-polynomial has a nonnegative $\gamma$-vector, and hence, symmetric and unimodal coefficients. In the classical cases, we also provide expansions, identities, and generating functions for the $h$-polynomials of Steinberg tori. Nous considérons un groupe de Weyl affine irréductible $W \ltimes L$ avec complexe de Coxeter $\Sigma$, où $W$ désigne le groupe de Weyl fini associé et $L$ le sous-groupe des translations. Le tore de Steinberg est le complexe cellulaire Booléen obtenu comme le quotient de $\Sigma$ par $L$. Nous montrons que les $h$-polynômes, ordinaires et de drapeaux, du tore de Steinberg (sans la face vide) sont des fonctions génératrices sur $W$ pour une statistique de type descente, étudiée en premier lieu par Cellini. Nous montrons également qu'un $h$-polynôme ordinaire possède un $\gamma$-vecteur positif, et par conséquent, a des coefficients symétriques et unimodaux. International audience With a crystallographic root system $\Phi$ , there are associated two Catalan objects, the set of nonnesting partitions $NN(\Phi)$, and the cluster complex $\Delta (\Phi)$. These possess a number of enumerative coincidences, many of which are captured in a surprising identity, first conjectured by Chapoton. We prove this conjecture, and indicate its generalisation for the Fuß-Catalan objects $NN^{(k)}(\Phi)$ and $\Delta^{(k)}(\Phi)$, conjectured by Armstrong. A un système de racines cristallographique, on associe deux objets de Catalan: l’ensemble des partitions non-emboîtées $NN(\Phi)$, et le complexe d’amas$\Delta (\Phi)$. Ils possèdent de nombreuses coïncidences énumératives, plusieurs d’entre elles étant capturées dans une identité surprenante, conjecturée par Chapoton. Nous démontrons cette conjecture, et indiquons sa généralisation pour les objets de Fuß-Catalan $NN^{(k)}(\Phi)$ et $\Delta^{(k)}(\Phi)$, conjecturée par Armstrong.
