International audience A tropical curve $\Gamma$ is a metric graph with possibly unbounded edges, and tropical rational functions are continuous piecewise linear functions with integer slopes. We define the complete linear system $|D|$ of a divisor $D$ on a tropical curve $\Gamma$ analogously to the classical counterpart. We investigate the structure of $|D|$ as a cell complex and show that linear systems are quotients of tropical modules, finitely generated by vertices of the cell complex. Using a finite set of generators, $|D|$ defines a map from $\Gamma$ to a tropical projective space, and the image can be modified to a tropical curve of degree equal to $\mathrm{deg}(D)$. The tropical convex hull of the image realizes the linear system $|D|$ as a polyhedral complex.

Abstract Poincaré half-maps can be used to characterize the behavior of recurrent dynamical systems. Their usefulness is demonstrated for a linear three-dimensional single-loop feedback system. In this example everything can be calculated analytically. The resulting half-maps are "benign" endomorphic maps with a complicated topological structure. This is surprising since the combination of two such half-maps (yielding an ordinary Poincaré map) always implies simple behavior in a linear system. The method has a direct bearing on the theory of piecewise linear systems -like the well-known Danziger-Elmergreen system of hormonal regulation.

In this paper, we consider the realization of configuration of limit cycles of piecewise linear systems on the plane. We show that any configuration of finite number of Jordan curves can be realized by a discontinuous piecewise linear system with two zones separated by a continuous curve.

We investigate Newton-type optimization methods for solving piecewise linear systems (PLSs) with nondegenerate coefficient matrix. Such systems arise, for example, from the numerical solution of linear complementarity problem, which is useful to model several learning and optimization problems. In this letter, we propose an effective damped Newton method, PLS-DN, to find the exact (up to machine precision) solution of nondegenerate PLSs. PLS-DN exhibits provable semiiterative property, that is, the algorithm converges globally to the exact solution in a finite number of iterations. The rate of convergence is shown to be at least linear before termination. We emphasize the applications of our method in modeling, from a novel perspective of PLSs, some statistical learning problems such as box-constrained least squares, elitist Lasso (Kowalski & Torreesani, 2008 ), and support vector machines (Cortes & Vapnik, 1995 ). Numerical results on synthetic and benchmark data sets are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of PLS-DN on these problems.
