GENDER DIFFERENCES AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS ACADEMICS IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA

Students’ poor Financial Accounting performance in senior secondary schools is worrisome and induces youths to engage in several social vices. An attempt to curb the menace and improve students’ performance led this study to assess the instructional resources and effective pedagogy of Financial Accounting in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Adopting the descriptive survey research design, the population of the study comprised 2,492 senior secondary schools 1 and 2 students and 10 teachers of Financial Accounting under Education District IV in Lagos State, Nigeria. 300 students and all the 10 teachers eventually emerged as samples using Checkmarket Sample Size Calculator at 5% margin and 95% confidence level. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire that obtained Cronbach’s Alpha=0.90, and analysed using descriptive analysis and t-test at α=0.05 level of significance. The results showed that the teachers of Financial Accounting were not using activity-based pedagogical strategies. Most of the instructional materials necessary for the effective pedagogy of Financial Accounting were inadequate and malfunctioning. Therefore, Financial Accounting teachers are strongly encouraged to apply innovative and experiential learning strategies in teaching and learning. Furthermore, adequate infrastructure and modern equipment in the schools will create better learning opportunities for students.

The increasing occurrences of youth unemployment and the associated vices led to the introduction of Marketing Trade subject, and other trade/entrepreneurship subjects, at senior secondary schools in Nigeria. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the instructional strategies and students’ entrepreneurship empowerment through the acquisition of competences in Marketing Trade subject. The study raised and answered two related research questions and also formulated and tested one relevant research on the null hypothesis (H0). The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised 1367 students of Marketing Trade subject in the randomly selected public senior secondary schools under Education District IV of Lagos State, Nigeria. Using Taro Yamane’s sample size calculation method, the sample size was 309 respondents, but 308 was returned eventually. The research instrument used was structured questionnaire. The Cronbach Alpha correlation coefficient used to determine the internal consistency of the research instrument yielded an average index of 0.88. The research questions and hypotheses data were analysed using mean and Pearson Product Moment of Correction statistical tools respectively. The findings show that recommended instructional strategies were not used appropriately, and as a result, the expected marketing competences were not acquired to the extent that they can empower students for entrepreneurship. It was therefore recommended that Government, Ministry of Education, teachers, and other relevant stakeholders should collaborate to ensure that Marketing Trade subject is ideally implemented to empower students with the requisite competences needed to achieve its goals and objectives in Nigeria.

This study was aimed to find out the attitude towards mathematics which were communicating gender difference among secondary level students. A quantitative research approach was used to explore gender difference in relation to the attitude towards mathematics among nine graders. Fifty seven public sector schools in Lahore were selected for this research. All nine graders in public sector secondary schools were target population of current study. Eleven hundred and eighty six students were selected through multistage random sampling for present research.  A questionnaire developed by the researcher was used for exploration of gender difference in relation to students’ attitude towards mathematics at secondary level in Pakistan. It was a Lekert Scale with five points on it. The questionnaire was pilot tested and validated by experts. It was found that overall gender difference in attitude towards mathematics did not significantly exists. Therefore, the reason of difficulty in mathematics is needed to be explored for both boys and girls.
