In this paper, we restudy the morphology of A.subarctica low-frustule forms from the Volga reservoirs (Ivankovo, Gorky and Kuibyshev) using scanning electron microscopy. These forms occur as short colonies and one of them, by quantitative (colony size, valve diameter and mantle height, valve height/diameter ratio, number of areola rows and areolae in 10 µm) and qualitative (shape of spines, areolae arrangement of valve face and mantle) characteristics, corresponds to A.pusilla. The latter is a cosmopolitan species, new for the flora of Volga. A. Pusilla is very similar to A.subarctica by morphology and these two species are often found together that may cause problems with their identification.

Hantzschia species are uncommon in Xinjiang Province, usually found in small populations and found only in a few samples. However, the diversity in the region is relatively high, with 13 species and 1 variety being identified. Except for the cosmopolitan species H. amphioxys, H. abundans, H. virgata and H. distinctepunctata, most of the taxa in Hantzschia observed in this region have limited distributions, including H. vivacior, H. nitzschioides, H. compacta, H. barckhausenii, H. longa and H. vivax, as well as the species described herein as new. Four new species of Hantzschia are described: H. pseudobardii, H. sinensis, H. yili and H. subrobusta, a further two interesting species, H. vivacior and H. nitzschioides are documented with light and scanning electron microscopy. All species described are compared with other similar Hantzschia taxa from other localities or compared to holotype specimens. These data show a higher diversity of diatoms in Xinjiang Province than previously understood and provide additional information for understanding their biogeography.

A new species of Cribraria, described herein as C. bicolor, appeared in moist chamber cultures on samples of the bark of Eucalyptus sp. collected at two localities in Australia. The morphology of representative specimens was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy, and micrographs of relevant morphological details of sporocarps and spores are provided. The species has a number of distinct and unique morphological features, including a glossy bright-violet globose sporotheca and a two-colored long stalk which is bright-red over the lower one-third and light yellow or lemon-yellow over the upper two-thirds. The combination of these characteristics as well as a shallow calyculus which is dark-violet when viewed under a dissecting microscope and bright red in transmitted light when mounted in lactophenol makes C. bicolor a well-defined morphospecies when compared to all other species of Cribraria. The stability of the taxonomic characters of the species was confirmed by an examination of a number of specimens.

A new species, Encyonema oblonga Liu & Xie, is collected during a survey of the freshwater diatom flora of Manghe River, Shanxi, China. The valves of this new species are oblong with rounded apices and have the features typical of Encyonema, including complex areolae. We compare the new species with the most similar taxa, E. leei, E. leei var. sinensis and E. appalachianum and consider that  E. leei var. sinensis is the valid name.  The morphology of E. oblonga is documented with light and scanning electron microscopy.

Lowland intermittent ponds, although biologically important, are poorly studied water habitats. During the analyses of the material taken from lowland pond in Pelagonia Valley, and Vitachevo, Republic of North Macedonia, the diatom Sellaphora pelagonica sp. nov. was recorded and described based on light and scanning electron microscopy. The species is characterized by a strictly linear valve outline with parallel to slightly concave margins and broadly rounded ends, 15.0–40.0 µm long and 5.0–7.0 µm wide. These features, together with raphe structure and areolar shape are compared with several similar taxa currently ascribed to Sellaphora.

This is the first detailed taxonomic study of the genus Navicula in the Krasnodar Territory of the Caucasus region, Russia. During the study of the genus in waterbodies of the Adegoy River valley 15 taxa were recorded. Two species, N. adegoyensis sp. nov. and N. pseudocryptofallax sp. nov., are described as new to science. Their morphology is studied by light and scanning electron microscopy, and comparisons with morphologically similar species are provided. The use of the name N. avenacea for N. lanceolata sensu auct. is discussed. Navicula diversity was higher in the Adegoy River than in pools elsewhere in the river valley.

During a survey of the diatom flora of the Adegoy River (Krasnodar Territory, Russia), an unknown Fragilaria species (Bacillariophyta) was found that could not be identified using the currently available literature and here we describe it as a new species. The morphology of Fragilaria irregularis sp. nov. was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy and compared to similar species including Fragilaria deformis, F. rinoi, F. septentrionalis and Fragilariforma bicapitata. It differed from these taxa in several characters. Most observed valves showed an irregular striation pattern, a feature not observed in other species. Other important differences include valve outline (linear with parallel margins) and stria density (7–14 in 10 µm, lower compared to all other species). The new taxon has a linear valve outline with parallel to weakly convex margins, subcapitate apices and a very irregular, coarse striation pattern.

Sexually dimorphic traits are widespread in animals, and include sex-specific weapons, ornamentation and, although less noticed, glands and associated structures. In arachnids, certain lineages of the order Opiliones exhibit diverse forms of dimorphism in the armature and length of appendages (common in Laniatores), as well as in the presence of sexually dimorphic glands (mostly investigated in Cyphophthalmi), positing harvestmen as promising models to study sexual dimorphism. Whereas the evolution and ecological significance of armature have been the focus of recent attention, sexually dimorphic glands remain understudied in groups other than Cyphophthalmi, despite being widespread in Opiliones. We therefore selected the amphi-Pacific family Zalmoxidae as an ideal taxon to investigate the evolutionary dynamics of this trait. We first describe four new species of Palaeotropical Zalmoxis, including a species with sexually dimorphic glands, and describe the morphology of zalmoxid species with sexually dimorphic glands using scanning electron microscopy. Using a previously assembled six-locus dataset supplemented with new terminals, and applying stochastic character mapping, we infer that sexually dimorphic glands evolved once in the Neotropics and at least four times in the Palaeotropic zalmoxids, revealing the evolutionary lability of this trait.

A new diatom species, Neidiomorpha dianshaniana sp. nov., found in Dianshan Lake in Shanghai, China, is described herein. The morphology of N. dianshaniana has been documented by light and scanning electron microscopy. Neidiomorpha dianshaniana valves are elliptical in outline with rostrate apices. Raphe is almost straight and filiform. The axial area is narrow and linear. The central area is small, round to transversely elliptical or irregular. Striae are slightly radiate and almost parallel near the apices. Puncta are arranged in undulating longitudinal rows. Neidiomorpha dianshaniana’s most visible feature is its lack of central constriction, in which respect it differs from the three other species in the genus Neidiomorpha.

Abstract In the historical Grunow collection in Vienna, a piece of a broken slide covered with mica contained diatom material from Porto Subzanski, a coastal environment in Croatia. This material was examined in scanning electron microscopy. Several poorly documented or improperly assigned taxa within the Achnanthales, namely in Amphicocconeis and Cocconeis, were re-examined. A new combination of Amphicocconeis and a new species of Cocconeis are proposed. The new species, Cocconeis subzanskiensis, is closely related to Cocconeis placentula, except for the lack of a characteristic hyaline sub-marginal rim on the raphe valve, and is compared with other marine taxa pertaining to the same group. Recently described in tropical environments, Cocconeis coronatoides has been found in the Grunow material.

AbstractThe hispidus species group is formed for four new species from East Asia of the genus Plagiophorus Motschulsky: P. hispidussp. nov., P. hlavacisp. nov., P. serratussp. nov., and P. grandoculatussp. nov. Uncoated specimens were examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and micrographs of the holotypes are presented. Keys to the species groups of the genus occurring in East Asia and to the species of the hispidus group are given. The hispidus group is probably monophyletic, having peculiar spinous setae on the male metasternum. The chaetotaxy of the labrum and clypeus is useful for distinguishing species of Plagiophorus.
