O presente artigo tem por objetivo realizar um estudo sobre as estratégias adaptativas empregadas no processo de remidiação do conto “In the tall grass” (2012), de Stephen King e Joe Hill, para a linguagem cinematográfica do streaming. Para tanto, nos propomos a realizar uma leitura imanente pautada nos aspectos formais e temáticos das duas obras: alterações e permanências de elementos narrativos, rupturas e continuidades formais e simbólicas, além das escolhas e recursos da linguagem cinematográfica empregados pelo adaptador Vincenzo Natali, bem como suas (possíveis) motivações. Para tanto, nos embasamos nas teorias acerca do processo de adaptação propostas por Stam (2000), Bolter e Grusin (2000), Ondaatje (2002) e Hutcheon (2013). A partir da análise, concluimos que, com a tarefa de não apenas reconfigurar uma obra literária para o modo de engajamento audiovisual mas, além disso, expandir uma narrativa curta para a duração de um filme longa-metragem, Natali lança mão de estratégias voltadas para a adaptabilidade do material-fonte e para a aceitabilidade mercadológica de seu filme, a saber: ampliação da participação dos personagens secundários e terciários; adição de um herói arquetípico como protagonista; ampliação dos cenários do conto, inserção de elementos sci-fi e do horror slasher. Ademais, muitos elementos da sintaxe cinematográfica são utilizados para transportar para a tela a tensão e a opressão do locus horribilis retratado no conto, tais como: tomadas aéreas do matagal; planos-detalhe em elementos da natureza; quadros abertos para estabelecer a localização dos personagens.

This present research undertakes the extensive study of horror fiction genre with reference to the select novels of one of the finest and celebrated horror fiction writers of all time, Stephen King. This paper is a substantial assessment of the select horror fiction of King. The research problem revolves extensively around the word fear. Stephen King has conjured up the images of most horrific creatures, monsters, places, and stories, and some of the most enduring villains in fiction. These unimaginable evil beings test the limits of the protagonist. Some of these villains have gone to the extent of becoming as famous (or infamous) as the writer himself. Many of Stephen King villains are monsters of the human variety such as serial killers, power hungry despots, nihilists, etc. His most memorable and monumental characters are the supernatural ones who use their dark powers to twist the orderly world around them into a special place of chaos and pain. It has been assumed that the horror elements in the fiction of Stephen King are the result of his strategic use of supernaturalist and non-supernaturalist elements. The techniques that he uses to evoke horror in reader have been treated as a site for research attention by the researcher.

AbstractPlant species that negatively affect their environment by encroachment require constant management and monitoring through field surveys. Drones have been suggested to support field surveyors allowing more accurate mapping with just-in-time aerial imagery. Furthermore, object-based image analysis tools could increase the accuracy of species maps. However, only few studies compare species distribution maps resulting from traditional field surveys and object-based image analysis using drone imagery. We acquired drone imagery for a saltmarsh area (18 ha) on the Hallig Nordstrandischmoor (Germany) with patches of Elymus athericus, a tall grass which encroaches higher parts of saltmarshes. A field survey was conducted afterwards using the drone orthoimagery as a baseline. We used object-based image analysis (OBIA) to segment CIR imagery into polygons which were classified into eight land cover classes. Finally, we compared polygons of the field-based and OBIA-based maps visually and for location, area, and overlap before and after post-processing. OBIA-based classification yielded good results (kappa = 0.937) and agreed in general with the field-based maps (field = 6.29 ha, drone = 6.22 ha with E. athericus dominance). Post-processing revealed 0.31 ha of misclassified polygons, which were often related to water runnels or shadows, leaving 5.91 ha of E. athericus cover. Overlap of both polygon maps was only 70% resulting from many small patches identified where E. athericus was absent. In sum, drones can greatly support field surveys in monitoring of plant species by allowing for accurate species maps and just-in-time captured very-high-resolution imagery.

Abstract This article investigates biblical reception in the works of two popular modern fantasy authors. It stages an intertextual dialogue between Genesis 22:1-19, “the binding of Isaac”, and two episodes, in Stephen King’s The Gunslinger and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Return of the King. After presenting the dynamics of what happens to the biblical text in these two authors and the perspectives that come out, a hermeneutical reversal is then suggested, in which the modern stories are used to probe the biblical text. One can return to the Bible with questions culled from its later reception, in this case King and Tolkien. This article argues that the themes touched upon by the two authors are important and hermeneutically relevant ones, sometimes novel and sometimes contributions to exegetical debates that have been going on for centuries.

On the Phil Donahue show in early December 1981, Janet Dailey, the most successful romance writer in America today, explained, in answer to a question, why actual parents are usually absent in romance fiction. The form is short, it places a premium on excitement – and parents are not “interesting.” For a moment, Ms. Dailey almost lost her largely middle-aged audience. No one present thought to remind Janet Dailey that a contemporary genre of popular “thrillers” (which, by definition, aim to excite the reader) centers on parenthood. “Thriller” authors include Ira Levin, Peter Blatty, Stephen King, Lawrence Sanders, Mary Higgins Clark, Lawrence Block, V. C. Andrews, John Saul, and hundreds of lesser-known and -talented figures. It is logical, in fact, that no one mentioned in Dailey's presence what I call “family horror.” Romances and family thrillers are widely dissimilar, yet closely connected; the proverbial opposite sides of the same coin.

Asan wetland is a man-made wetland located in Uttarakhand state. In the given study, efforts have been made to study the floristic diversity and species composition of the aquatic macrophyte in Asan wetland and provide a check list. Sixty seven species were recorded under 32 families being maximum in Cyperaceae followed by Poaceae and Asteraceae. Remaining families comprised either one or two species each. Among all the recorded species, monocots (54%) were dominated over dicots (42%) and remaining 4% comprised ferns. Herbaceous macrophytes were found growing abundantly (54%) which are followed in degree of prevalence by the grasses (21%), sedges (18%), shrubs (4%) and climbers (3%). In addition, this study also revealed that pollution resistant species like Bacopa monnieri, Hydrilla verticillata, Vallisneria spiralis and Eichhornia crassipes along with tall grass species which grow in shallow water are spreading considerably that indicates an increasing pollution in the wetland. The present study will provide an important set of informations to support research work like limnological studies, productivity, conservation and management programs of this wetland.

SummaryThe Aguapey river basin in the Pampas grasslands of Argentina is the last refuge for a complete assemblage of globally threatened and Near Threatened birds. We evaluated the influence of landscape characteristics on the occurrence and abundance of six globally threatened and Near Threatened passerines. We used point counts to census birds and vegetation and quantified landscape characteristics 1,000 m from the count centres using remote sensing tools. Strange-tailed Tyrants Alectrurus risora were associated with higher percentages of tall-grass Andropogon lateralis in lowland areas. Saffron-cowled Blackbirds Xanthopsar flavus and Black-and-white Monjitas Heteroxolmis dominicana were associated with rolling landscape with wet lowland grasslands and marshes linked with dry upland grasslands. Marsh Seedeater Sporophila palustris and Chestnut Seedeater S. cinnamomea were associated with tall grasslands and marshes. Rufous-throated Seedeater S. ruficollis was not clearly associated with any type of habitat. The Aguapey grasslands are used mainly for livestock grazing and afforestation. Since 1995, approximately 50% of the original grassland habitat has been planted with exotic trees. If this trend continues, Saffron-cowled Blackbirds are likely to become extinct in the Aguapey river basin which currently supports the largest population of this species in Argentina. We recommend guidelines for establishing future reserves and wildlife management actions based on the landscape responses detected in this study. Future action should consider: maintaining connectivity between the Aguapey grasslands and the Ibera Nature Reserve, creating a protected area, designing a land use plan for the basin, avoiding afforestation in large blocks, removal of government incentives for large afforestation projects, and studying the viability of threatened bird populations in extensive cattle ranching areas.
