The rapid consumption of content on the web and the creation of online businesses and educational platforms require improved usability for the user. It also calls for concerted effort to understand users' interactions with these digital products and services. This study was carried out to investigate the search and scan patterns employed by users interacting with the selected web interface from the e-commerce and education domains and also to establish the possibility of a localized interface design patterns in Nigeria. Usability evaluation was conducted using OGAMA software as an eye-tracking tool, to record as well as to analyze eye and mouse tracking data from slideshow eye-tracking experiments concurrently. During the evaluation period, fixation count, fixation length and saccade length of each website were taken into the consideration. Findings revealed that educational based site delivers users’ need than that of e-commerce due to less level of distraction as a result of fewer images and pictures. The study recommends that interface designs should be void of the display of excessive ad contents and include proper formatting of navigation items to contribute towards an enhanced user experience.

Currently, many powerful applications designed to combat social deviations are available, like the web-filtering systems, which measure the content of a website before submitting it to the user, notifying whether the content of the website presents (or not) information related to pornography, violence, racism, among others, and prompting the user to not accessing the site, or even blocking access to the website. Nevertheless, frequently the feedback of these systems is not well-designed, which may confuse users and lead to mistakes, disappointments, and misunderstandings. In order to reduce this concern, a method is provided to developers with guidance in designing usable security notifications to be incorporated in web-filtering systems. The method is structured through a library of user interface design patterns which integrates essential concepts of security and usability. The authors show the effectiveness of the patterns by using an illustrative example as a proof-of-concept together with a preliminary study.

The use of color is of great significance to the appearance and usability of web interfaces. However, visually impaired people have always been ignored in web interface design in terms of color scheme. Therefore, it is necessary to study their difficulties while browsing web pages and accessing to information. By means of enumerating the color barriers, this paper summarizes the principles of how to use color in the web interface design for visually impaired people. It is expected that the proposed principles would benefit such people who conduct web interface design while being aware of the needs of visually impaired people.

The development of technology and internet has contributed to more people viewing on-screen content and an increase the amount of material that can be read directly from a Web-based platform. The transformation from paper-based materials to digital materials on the Web, more or less has affected the readability of the materials in which information presented on the printed and web-based documents is dissimilar. However, only few studies have been carried out on the presentation of information specifically, the readability of the text in web-based platform. Meanwhile, readability is one of the crucial aspect of Web usability and could affect the success of a website. The speed of reading is regarded as a good measure of readability. Therefore, this study aims to measure the readers reading speed for web interfaces. This study followed a quantitative analysis method that used experiments to collect data and involved university students as the test subjects. A Web-based Reading Speed Test System (RSTS) was developed for data collection and analysis purpose. The findings of this study found that the web interface with the combination of blue font color, yellow background color and Arial font type have the highest reading speed. In contrary, web interface that consists of combination black font color, white background color and Arial font type have the lowest reading speed. In addition, the reading speed of male participants was slightly higher than the female participants. To conclude, the results of this study signify that the interface design had a significant impact on the students reading speed for web pages.

Social media services make it possible for an increasing number of people to express their opinion publicly. In this context, large amounts of hateful comments are published daily. The PHARM project aims at monitoring and modeling hate speech against refugees and migrants in Greece, Italy, and Spain. In this direction, a web interface for the creation and the query of a multi-source database containing hate speech-related content is implemented and evaluated. The selected sources include Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook comments and posts, as well as comments and articles from a selected list of websites. The interface allows users to search in the existing database, scrape social media using keywords, annotate records through a dedicated platform and contribute new content to the database. Furthermore, the functionality for hate speech detection and sentiment analysis of texts is provided, making use of novel methods and machine learning models. The interface can be accessed online with a graphical user interface compatible with modern internet browsers. For the evaluation of the interface, a multifactor questionnaire was formulated, targeting to record the users’ opinions about the web interface and the corresponding functionality.

Viewing its use in language teaching mainly as a text corpus, this article examines the problem of the assessment of suitability of this material for use in the Greek language course in Cyprus schooling. The suitability of texts for use in language teaching is defined by four parameters, which are described in detail in this article: text readability, content, genre, and grammatical information. The literature review shows the research gap as to the ways of finding on the Web a suitable text for use in language teaching according to specific characteristics. The tool diaKeimenou, which is presented in this article, aims to fill this gap and help the teacher choose the most suitable texts for teaching with reasonable effort and time. The results of the usability evaluation of diaKeimenou are also presented in this article.
