This article is based at the diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma, which is characterized as a benign simple hyperplastic tumor and has an inflammatory reactive component that increases in size as a connective tissue reaction, forming a repair tissue as a protective mechanism. Clinically, pyogenic granuloma is seen as a red or purplish lesion (similar to the adjacent mucosa), too vascular, with a sessile or pedunculated base, with slow growth, reaching a size that rarely exceeds 2,5 cm, the surface of which can be rough or smooth. It occurs more frequently in adulthood, with a predominance in females (mainly during pregnancy), between the second and seventh life's decades. This aim of this paper is to report a case of pyogenic granuloma on the upper lip of a patient at the FAESA's Dental Clinic.

AbstractSoft-tissue reaction to ceramic ossicular replacement prostheses (CORP) has been evaluated histologically in rabbits and humans. One week after implantation, severe inflammatory and foreign body reaction was observed in the fibrous connective tissue surrounding the prosthesis. Though some inflammatory response was seen after one month, after three months the CORP was surrounded by a layer of fibrous connective tissue without any foreigh body giant cell, histiocyte or inflammatory cell infiltration. Our satisfactory clinical results in humans without placing a cartilage between the CORP and the fascia graft may be due to the excellent softtissue compatibility of CORP, as demonstrated in this study.

Onchocerca armillata was found in 284 (28%) of 1,016 aortas, and O. gutturosa in 82 (28.87%) of 284 nuchal ligaments and in 11 (7.85%) of 140 rumenosplenic areas in specimens from cattle slaughtered during a 12-month period. Adult parasites were not found in 600 hides. Gross lesions included parasitic tunnels, nodules, roughening and calcification in the aortic walls. The connective tissue of nuchal ligaments and rumenosplenic areas was increased in amount, was gelatinous and brown and had a few nodules. Microscopically there were acute changes with oedema, haemorrhages and cellular infiltrations predominantly by eosinophils. There were chronic granulomatous reactions characterized by accumulation of macrophages, lymphocytes, plasma cells, giant cells, calcification and fibrosis around degenerate and dead parasites. Neutral fat was in parasites and surrounding cells. Both changes often occurred in the same specimen and many samples had parasites but no tissue reaction. Hypersensitivity, foreign-body reactions and parasitic toxins apparently were involved in the genesis of these lesions.

Abstract Aspirin prolongs the bleeding time in normal subjects and inhibits platelet release and aggregation with connective tissue and other biological agents. We have investigated one of the possible mechanisms by which aspirin prolongs the bleeding time by comparing the effects of aspirin and placebo on the bleeding time and platelet aggregation with connective tissue in normal volunteers. Two separate studies were performed. Both showed prolongation of the bleeding time and inhibition of the platelet connective tissue reaction after aspirin, but only the second study showed a significant correlation between these changes. Both studies are reported in detail because the discrepancy between them illustrates some important principles that require consideration when relating the effects of drugs on platelet function in vitro to their effects in vivo. The findings suggest that when particular care is taken to standardize the measurement of the platelet connective tissue reaction in terms of the stimulus used, subject variability, and analysis of results, the prolonged bleeding time after aspirin can be shown to be related to the defect produced in the platelet connective tissue reaction.
