Service composition is a widely accepted method to build service-oriented applications. However, due to the uncertainty of infrastructure environments, service performance and user requests, service composition faces a great challenge to guarantee the dependability of the corresponding composite services. In this chapter, we provide an insightful analysis of the dependability issue of composite services. And we present a solution based on two-level redundancy: component service redundancy and structural redundancy. With component service redundancy, we study how to determine the number of backup services and how to guarantee consistent dependability of a composite service. In addition, structural redundancy aims at further improving dependability at business process level through setting up backup execution paths.

Service-Orientated Computing (SOC) has become a main trend in software engineering that promotes the construction of applications based on the notion of services. SOC has recently attracted the researchers' attention and has been adopted industry-wide. However, service composition that enables one to aggregate existing services into a new composite service is still a highly complex and critical task in service-oriented technology. To enhance availability of composite services, we propose a discovery-based service composition framework to better integrate component services in both static and dynamic manner, including (1) to devise a notion of service availability especially for composition; (2) to develop a dynamic service composition (DSC) pattern for addressing the issues of service availability; and (3) to extend Contract Net Protocol (ECNP) to coordinate service discovery, composition and invocation based on the composite pattern. The main benefit of the proposed approach is better availability through attaching multiple candidate services for future binding.

Industry 4.0 is the digitalization of the manufacturing systems based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for developing a manufacturing system to gain efficiency and improve productivity. Cloud Manufacturing (CM) is a paradigm of Industry 4.0. Cloud Manufacturing System (CMS) considers anything as a service. The end product is developed based on the service composition in the CMS according to consumers’ needs. Also, composite services are developed based on the interaction of MCS providers from different geographical locations. Therefore, the appropriate Manufacturing Cloud Service (MCS) composition is an important problem based on the real-world conditions in CMS. The game theory studies the mathematical model development based on interactions between MCS providers according to real-world conditions. This research develops an Equilibrial Service Composition Model in Cloud Manufacturing (ESCM) based on game theory. MCS providers and consumers get benefits mutually based on ESCM. MCS providers are players in the game. The payoff function is developed based on a profit function. Also, the game strategies are the levels of Quality of Service (QoS) based on consumers’ needs in ESCM. Firstly, the article develops a composite service based on a non-cooperative game. The Nash equilibrium point demonstrates the QoS value of composite service and the payoff value for the players. Secondly, the article develops a composite service based on a cooperative game. The players participate in coalitions to develop the composite service based on formal cooperation. The grand coalition demonstrates the QoS value of composite service and the payoff value for the players in the cooperative game. The research has compared the games’ results. The players’ payoff and the QoS value are better in the cooperative game than in the non-cooperative game. Therefore, the MCS providers and consumers are satisfied mutually in the cooperative game based on ESCM. Finally, the article has applied ESCM in a Healthcare Service to equip 24 hospitals in the best time.

A critical issue in the choreographed services development is the conciliation of interaction protocol mismatches that affect the cooperation among the services to be integrated in the composite service. This chapter attempts to answer such an issue by presenting a mediation framework that supports the development and management of choreographed services by offering a loosely-coupled integration model and a flexible management of protocol mismatches. Such features are obtained by introducing (i) an action-based representation of the functions offered by a Web service; (ii) an explicit management of the state of the choreographed service, which determines the operations to be carried out in order to contribute to the service completion; (iii) an event-driven Web service execution model, which makes it possible to abandon the direct invocation of Web service operations in favour of an autonomous execution of actions, based on the available context information.

The regional and dynamic characteristics of mobile clouds pose a great challenge on information flow security during service composition. Although secure verification approaches based on standard noninterference provide a solid assurance on information flow security of composite service, too strict constraints on service components may cause the failure of composition procedure. In order to ensure the availability of composite service, we specify the declassification policies based on cryptographic operations to allow data to be legally declassified. And we propose the improved distributed secure service composition framework and approach, which can realize different cloud platforms in multiple domains, cooperate with each other to complete the declassification, and secure composition procedure. Through the experiment and evaluation, it is indicated that our approach provides a more reliable and efficient way for secure service composition in mobile clouds.
