In the flow of contemporary world history, the interactions between modern and postmodern values continue to be more bold, influenced by the leading person of information technology and communication. In the “most developed social situation”, many postmodern theorists seek to overcome traditional philosophy, including Marx’s philosophy. Human ideas will have another turn called “postmodernity”, but in the end, new forms of this way are still stuck. Moreover, Marx philosophy remains a preeminent legacy in at least two aspects posed by postmodernism: epistemology and the question of truth. It was realized, once again, that returning to Marx was an effective means of the ideological ailments of the new age.

Performing Brains on Screen deals with film enactments and representations of the belief that human beings are essentially their brains, a belief that embodies one of the most influential modern ways of understanding the human. Films have performed brains in two chief ways: by turning physical brains into protagonists, as in the “brain movies” of the 1950, which show terrestrial or extra-terrestrial disembodied brains carrying out their evil intentions; or by giving brains that remain unseen inside someone’s head an explicitly major role, as in brain transplantation films or their successors since the 1980s, in which brain contents are transferred and manipulated by means of information technology. Through an analysis of filmic genres and particular movies, Performing Brains on Screen documents this neglected filmic universe, and demonstrates how the cinema has functioned as a cultural space where a core notion of the contemporary world has been rehearsed and problematized.

This chapter examines the early insular history of Bede's Chronica Maiora in a universal context. It considers Bede's treatment of salvation history in the Chronica Maiora's account of the archipelago in the era of the Roman conquest and the barbarian invasions, viewed within the context of contemporary world history. The chapter explains that the Chronica Maiora is located in Bede's magisterial survey of divine and human time and traces the providential unfolding of universal history through the six ages of this world.
