While archival description has been standardized in North America since the 1990s, the online environment has introduced new challenges in preserving the hierarchical nature of archival description. Many archival databases, in an attempt to mimic library discovery layers and web search engines, have collapsed the archival aggregation into item-level records, which can erase the context and structure of the content described. This article examines the communication breakdown that happens between the archivist and end user via online archival description and proposes solutions to improve multi-level description including the use of predicates in links, increased online instructional support, and the inclusion of digitized assets in archival description databases.

Big data has great commercial importance to major businesses, but security and privacy challenges are also daunting this storage, processing, and communication. Big data encapsulate organizations' most important and sensitive data with multi-level complex implementation. The challenge for any organization is securing access to the data while allowing end user to extract valuable insights. Unregulated access privileges to the big data leads to loss or theft of valuable and sensitive. Privilege escalation leads to insider threats. Also, the computing architecture of big data is not focusing on session recording; therefore, it is becoming a challenge to identify potential security issues and to take remedial and mitigation mechanisms. Therefore, various big data security issues and their defense mechanisms are discussed in this chapter.

The performance of web applications is of paramount importance as it can impact end-user experience and the business revenue. Web Performance Optimization (WPO) deals with front-end performance engineering. Web performance would impact customer loyalty, SEO, web search ranking, SEO, site traffic, repeat visitors and overall online revenue. In this paper we have conducted the survey of state of the art tools, techniques, methodologies of various aspects of web performance optimization. We have identified key web performance patterns and proposed novel web performance driven development framework. We have elaborated on various techniques related to different phases of web performance driven development framework.

Web services have become popular as a vehicle for the design, integration, composition, reuse, and deployment of distributed and heterogeneous software. However, although industry standards for the description, composition, and orchestration of Web services have been under development, their conceptual underpinnings are not fully understood. Conceptual models for service specification are rare, as are investigations based on them. This paper presents and studies a multi-level service composition model that perceives service specification as going through several levels of abstraction. It starts from transactional operations at the lowest level and abstracts into activities at higher levels that are close to the service provider or end user. The authors treat service composition from a specification and execution point of view, where the former is about composition logic and the latter about transactional guarantees. Consequently, the model allows for the specification of a number of transactional properties, such as atomicity and guaranteed termination, at all levels. Different ways of achieving the composition properties and implications of the model are presented. The authors also discuss how the model subsumes practical proposals like the OASIS Business Transaction Protocol, Sun’s WS-TXM, and execution aspects of the BPEL4WS standard.

Multi-level adaptation in end-user development (EUD) is an effective way to enable non-technical end users such as educators to gradually introduce more functionality with increasing complexity to 3D virtual learning environments developed by themselves using EUD approaches. Parameterization, integration, and extension are three levels of adaptation ranging from straightforward to complex in terms of what end users have to understand in order to develop functional software applications, all within reach of end users without special training on programming. A 3D educational application EUD system prototype, iVirtualWorld, has been expanded to support 3D virtual chemistry experiments generation using these three levels of EUD adaptation. An evaluation has been conducted on 18 participants from the education domain, and the results confirmed ease-of-learn, ease-of-use, and usefulness of this solution. Contributions of this paper are 1) a paradigm for applying EUD technologies in 3D virtual learning environment creation; 2) an easy-to-use tool for educators to build customized virtual chemistry experiments; and 3) empirical assessment data for the multi-level adaptation solution.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide the empirical evidence supporting the existence of a multi-level hierarchical TQM model showing the structural inter-relationships among a total of 16 TQM variables (i.e. drivers, enablers and outcomes). Design/methodology/approach The set of identified TQM variables is the product of an in-depth review of the literature, and a robust reiterative process of verification and validation. Inter-relationships among the TQM variables were subjected to the scrutiny of a panel of experts, and were used as a basis for developing a web-based survey to explore the existence as well as strength of the structural relationship between each and every pair of the identified variables using interpretive structural modelling and MICMAC (Impact Matrix Cross-Reference Multiplication Applied to a Classification). Findings TQM variables were classified and clustered based on their influence and dependence on each other. Variables such as commitment by top management and customer satisfaction appear to have a strong chance to affect change, whereas variables such suppliers and competitors are very dependent on, and sensitive to, the evolution of the influent variables. Originality/value The paper demonstrates a multi-level TQM model encompassing all identified TQM drivers, enablers, and outcomes. The paper not only addresses a gap in the relevant literature (reduces the evidence scarcity about the hierarchical nature of TQM variables), but also gives insights into the variables with most driving power needing greater management attention.

Discovery service is very important in an automated and digital library system. There are different types of this services are available in an online environment such as google scholar, research gateway, ebsco, summon, exlibris primo, worldcat and etc. This is very popular service and enable customization in different fields such as end user accounts, branding, embedding your chat service, turning off and on certain resources, custom search boxes, embedded widgets, facets modifications, language choices, and content and underlying technology infrastructure philosophies may vary, but the results are largely the same. Altmetrics is a part of discovery services to developing any online based institutional digital repository for enhancing the library and information services among the research scholars, users, students, and teachers also. The objective of this paper is to explore and access the altmetrics enabled services from the DSpace user interface for fulfilling the discovery services in an integrated digital library system. Apart from this it also describe some well-known altmetrics enabled tools available in an online environment. Now, this integrated framework is very helpful for each and every sphere of institutional digital repository for designing and developing the altmetrics enabled discovery services through an open source software DSpace.
