Since the end of XIX century when for the very first time the archival principles of arrangement and description were outlined until ICA have published their first international standard commonly known as ISAD-G which defines its 26 elements of archival description and followed afterwards by series of archival standards (ISAAR- CPF, ISDIAH, and ISDF) in 1990’s and 2000’s. These elements of description are similar to metadata elements. As the metadata elements of Dublin Core, for example, that have been released in the mid of 1990’s and then later on was adopted by ISO 15836-1:2017 and ISO 15836-2:2019. This article describes the similarities among both elements, the elements of description and the elements of metadata, including the ICA’s latest archival standard (RiC) and by using paradigm of integration-interconnection and three model of discplinary cooperation (multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary) according to Amin Abdullah. Besides reading closely towards the literary sources including the published standards released by ICA and ISO, the writer also does the same things towards various archival standards published by several national archives. These are some of the contribution of archival science and archival standards in order to open the chance of having equal cooperation and seeing the possibilities of having cooperation among its three stages.

The paper aims to see if and how records systems have impact over archival description. If the answer would be positive, then it is a fair enterprise to check if the standards for archival description can accommodate the description of records system. Are these just tools for managing records, elements of the history of a records aggregation? Or are they, as presumed, a contiguous context, that must be highlighted? Is it enough to describe past records systems implicitly, from various descriptive attributes or it is worth to have defined a specific entity?

While archival description has been standardized in North America since the 1990s, the online environment has introduced new challenges in preserving the hierarchical nature of archival description. Many archival databases, in an attempt to mimic library discovery layers and web search engines, have collapsed the archival aggregation into item-level records, which can erase the context and structure of the content described. This article examines the communication breakdown that happens between the archivist and end user via online archival description and proposes solutions to improve multi-level description including the use of predicates in links, increased online instructional support, and the inclusion of digitized assets in archival description databases.

Despite sustained calls for a critical review of harmful content within archival descriptive records, there remains much to be explored by way of implications for Canadian academic archives. This article addresses the absence of Canadian archival practitioners in broader discussions about the revision and remediation of descriptive records by exploring how staff in Special Collections & Archives at the University of Waterloo Library are working to integrate equityand reconciliation-informed thinking into the department’s archival practice by revising their approach to language in archival descriptions. Beginning with an overview of the department and the landscape in which it operates, this article provides a brief review of guidance available in the Rules for Archival Description. It then provides the rationale behind the recent changes to descriptive practice before exploring a series of examples of how and where this work is newly underway. The article concludes with a consideration of current identified challenges and the related work ahead.

The material-turn in photographic studies reveals that photographs cannot be correctly understood without direct interpretation of their physicality; however, institutions with photograph collections are increasingly offering digital access to these physical objects. With the benefits of digital access being too great to ignore, this research determines how a public institution can best enhance access to a collection of material photographs through digital media, while maintaining the core needs of the institution, its users, and the meaning of the photographs themselves. Using the Charles Chusseau-Flaviens collection at George Eastman House as an example, this research reveals practical benefits of combining Web 2.0 technologies such as Flickr with Encoded Archival Description (EAD) into an effective and efficient collection-level finding aid. This thesis presents an approach to providing enhanced digital access to a large collection of photographs while considering their materiality. The resulting finding aid can be found at: http://www.ryanbuckley.ca/findingaid/chusseau-flaviens.xml.

Emotion, affect, archives and selection. The exciting paths of the new humanities This article attempts to introduce and popularize in Polish academia the theories and assumptions, which have so far been presented mainly in the Anglo-Saxon literature on the subject, of the affectivity (or emotional aspect) of archives. Through a qualitative analysis of existing research and theoretical texts, four thematic areas were identified that offer particularly interesting perspectives for researchers and archivists: affect and archival selection; affect and archival use; affect and archival description; and archives and trauma. Particular attention has been given to appraising documentation and positioning the archivist in this process. An attempt is also made to relate this type of research to the concept of new humanities.
