An integrated framework for online news quality assurance

This paper introduced a synthesized theoretical framework of online news quality assurance. The framework includes conceptual models of quality evaluation, value assessment, and intervention. The framework also provides typologies of user activities, information agents, and the relationships among them. The framework is grounded in prior frameworks of information quality and the analysis of two cases of large-scale online news aggregators: Google News and Facebook News. The framework can be used as a knowledge source to guide the design and evaluation of quality assurance processes of online news providers and aggregator ecosystems.

AbstractPublic trust is paramount for the well functioning of data driven healthcare activities such as digital health interventions, contact tracing or the build-up of electronic health records. As the use of personal data is the common denominator for these healthcare activities, healthcare actors have an interest to ensure privacy and anonymity of the personal data they depend on. Maintaining privacy and anonymity of personal data contribute to the trustworthiness of these healthcare activities and are associated with the public willingness to trust these activities with their personal data. An analysis of online news readership comments about the failed care.data programme in England revealed that parts of the public have a false understanding of anonymity in the context of privacy protection of personal data as used for healthcare management and medical research. Some of those commenting demanded complete anonymity of their data to be willing to trust the process of data collection and analysis. As this demand is impossible to fulfil and trust is built on a false understanding of anonymity, the inability to meet this demand risks undermining public trust. Since public concerns about anonymity and privacy of personal data appear to be increasing, a large-scale information campaign about the limits and possibilities of anonymity with respect to the various uses of personal health data is urgently needed to help the public to make better informed choices about providing personal data.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a scalable conceptual framework for governance of supply chain (SC) information flows by re-contextualizing the organizational concept of information governance as an SC concept. Design/methodology/approach This study leverages the strategy-structure-process-performance (SSPP) theory base to explain how effective SC information governance relates to improved internal SC performance. Via an in-depth literature review followed by conceptual theory building, the key features of organizational-level information governance are cast into a theoretical framework. Findings This study presents the theoretical framework that explains how SC information governance should contribute to improved internal SC performance. The proposed framework provides a theoretical basis for future research on SC information governance and would become a useful first step to extend the concept of SC information governance at the SC level. Practical implications SC managers should be aware that information governance mechanisms, rather than the management of basic, information flow-directed processes, to yield the best performance outcomes. Because of the numerous touch points information has in complex SCs, managing the quality of SC information through broader, higher-level governance standards is more important than maximizing connectivity and information flows, and information governance structures/policies across organizations should be designed accordingly. Originality/value This study theoretically links SC information governance and internal SC performance via information quality. It also advances the understanding of SC information flow by challenging the implicit but flawed assumption that uniformity of information quality within the supply chain to create the best outcomes.

Public-private collaborations can easily be disrupted when nascent conflicts are not addressed. These intersectoral conflicts may be associated with the resource exchanges necessary to achieve a shared objective, may be the result of goal divergence, or may involve both. This research utilizes a complementary theoretical approach to examine conflict management in two large-scale event collaborations, motorcycle rallies, that have been in operation for nineteen years. Framed by resource dependence, goal congruence, and conflict management theories the research examines the patterns of conflict and conflict management perceived by participants in these collaborations. The theoretical framework allowed us to address the complexities of aligning collaboration goals around the resource dependencies that lead to the formation of the collaborations. Our findings, which support quasi-formal conflict management, link this body of theories to the management of conflicts between collaborating organizations in a manner that, to our knowledge, has not been previously attempted.

In 2016, a historically large gathering of Indigenous peoples, tribal nations, and allies took place at the Standing Rock reservation, North Dakota, in response to the proposed construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Under the assertion of Mni Wičoni (Water Is Life), a social movement emerged with the purpose of protecting clean drinking water and Indigenous lands. Drawing on Gerald Vizenor’s theoretical framework that emphasizes storytelling and active presence over settler resistance, this study argues that Indigenous water protectors’ collective action in the movement, as well as their stories and remembrance of Standing Rock, are acts of survivance, in which they are able to denounce othering and challenge the colonizer’s gaze. While water is often described as a first medicine by Indigenous peoples, the water protectors’ stories in this essay suggest that the movement itself represented another remedy as well. Specifically, this movement represents a pivotal moment of cultural revitalization and community across what participants refer to as “Indian country,” in which individuals are able to engage in large scale grassroots decolonizing praxis rooted in spirituality and ceremony, and suspend genocidal traps of victimry that they have long battled.

Abstract The applications for metal additive manufacturing (AM) are expanding. Powder-bed, powder-fed, and wire-fed AM are the different kinds of AM technologies based on the feeding material. Wire-Arc AM (WAAM) is a wire-fed technique that has the potential to fabricate large-scale three-dimensional objects. In WAAM, a metallic wire is continuously fed to the deposition location and is melted by an arc-welding power source. As the applications for WAAM expands, the quality assurance of the parts becomes a major concern. Nondestructive testing (NDT) of AM parts is necessary for quality assurance and inspection of these materials. The conventional method of inspection is to perform testing on the finished parts. There are several limitations encountered when using conventional methods of NDT for as-built AM parts due to surface conditions and complex structure. In-situ process monitoring based on the ultrasound technology is proposed for WAAM material inspection during the manufacturing process. Ultrasonic inline monitoring techniques have the advantages of providing valuable information about the process and parts quality. Ultrasonic technique was used to detect the process condition deviations from the normal. A fixture developed by the authors holds an ultrasonic sensor under the build platform and aligned with the center of the base plate. Ultrasonic signals were measured for different process conditions by varying the current and gas flow rate. Features (indicators) from the radio frequency (RF) signal were used to evaluate the difference in signal clusters to identify and classify different build conditions. Results show that the indicator values of the ultrasonic signals in the region of interest (ROI) changes with different process conditions and can be used to classify them.

The difficulty of no-reference image quality assessment (NR IQA) often lies in the lack of knowledge about the distortion in the image, which makes quality assessment blind and thus inefficient. To tackle such issue, in this article, we propose a novel scheme for precise NR IQA, which includes two successive steps, i.e., distortion identification and targeted quality evaluation. In the first step, we employ the well-known Inception-ResNet-v2 neural network to train a classifier that classifies the possible distortion in the image into the four most common distortion types, i.e., Gaussian white noise (WN), Gaussian blur (GB), jpeg compression (JPEG), and jpeg2000 compression (JP2K). Specifically, the deep neural network is trained on the large-scale Waterloo Exploration database, which ensures the robustness and high performance of distortion classification. In the second step, after determining the distortion type of the image, we then design a specific approach to quantify the image distortion level, which can estimate the image quality specially and more precisely. Extensive experiments performed on LIVE, TID2013, CSIQ, and Waterloo Exploration databases demonstrate that (1) the accuracy of our distortion classification is higher than that of the state-of-the-art distortion classification methods, and (2) the proposed NR IQA method outperforms the state-of-the-art NR IQA methods in quantifying the image quality.
