The role of computational intelligence techniques in applied sciences and engineering is becoming popular today. It is essential because the autonomous engineering applications require intelligent decision in real time in order to achieve the desired goal. This chapter discusses some of the approaches to demonstrate various applications of computational intelligence in dependable networked control systems and a case study of teleoperation over wireless network. The results have shown that computational intelligence algorithms can be successfully implemented on an embedded application to offer an improved online performance. The different approaches have been compared and could be chosen as per application requirements.

Human heart electrophysiology is complex biological phenomenon, which is indirectly assessed by the measured ECG signal. ECG trace is further analyzed to derive interpretable surrogates including QT interval, QRS complex, PR interval, and T wave morphology. QT interval and its modification are the most commonly used surrogates of the drug triggered arrhythmia, but it is known that the QT interval itself is determined by other nondrug related parameters, physiological and pathological. In the current study, we used the computational intelligence algorithms to analyze correlations between various simulated physiological parameters and QT interval. Terfenadine given concomitantly with 8 enzymatic inhibitors was used as an example. The equation developed with the use of genetic programming technique leads to general reasoning about the changes in the prolonged QT. For small changes of the QT interval, the drug-related IKr and ICa currents inhibition potentials have major impact. The physiological parameters such as body surface area, potassium, sodium, and calcium ions concentrations are negligible. The influence of the physiological variables increases gradually with the more pronounced changes in QT. As the significant QT prolongation is associated with the drugs triggered arrhythmia risk, analysis of the role of physiological parameters influencing ECG seems to be advisable.

The purpose of this study was to understand how proactivity can affect the relationship between absorptive capacity and organisational performance. Most previous studies have ignored the role of proactivity in this relationship and have not considered the multidimensional nature of absorptive capacity. A questionnaire was sent to 800 CEOs of Spanish companies from different sectors, procuring a response rate of 38.25%. A structural equation model was applied to test the hypothesis. This study confirms the positive effect that absorptive capacity has on business performance and the moderating role of proactivity in this relationship. Companies that develop their capacity to absorb information from the environment achieve better results. Furthermore, if they engage in proactive behaviour within their company, this relationship is stronger. Future research should include more capacities that are related to knowledge and business performance (i.e., learning capability, innovation capacity, etc.). This study contributes to the understanding of how to manage a company’s knowledge in an appropriate way. It sheds new light on how knowledge management should be conducted, emphasising not only the gathering of information but also the promotion of a proactive attitude on the part of employees to achieve the goal of better performance.

An unanswered question is concerned with the influence of culture of individualism, power distance and uncertainty avoidance in entrepreneurs’ opportunity exploitation of new venture activities in developing economies in the context of societal level. Based on the sample of 130 individual entrepreneurs in Tanzania, this paper analyses how culture of individualism, uncertainty avoidance and power distance influence entrepreneurial opportunity exploitation of new venture activities on societal level.  The results indicated that the culture of individualism contributes highly on entrepreneurs’ opportunity exploitation of new venture activities. The results of uncertainty avoidance imply that the greater the uncertainty avoidance, the less the entrepreneurs’ chance to exploit opportunities of new venture activities. The proactive behaviour that was used as a mediator variable also contributes to the relationship between individualism, uncertainty avoidance and entrepreneurs’ opportunity exploitation of new venture activities. The study has made a contribution to the developing countries literature by focusing on individual entrepreneurs on societal level.

Organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) is important in the organisational behavioural research. OCB contributes significantly to the success of an organisation through proactive behaviour in extra-role activity and active involvement in organisation operation to ensure efficiency and productivity in service delivery. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between work-family conflict as the antecedent of OCB and the role of self-efficacy as the mediating variable. Data were collected from 510 public administrators at Public Service Department, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health in Putrajaya, Malaysia. Data analyses were conducted using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to test the research model hypotheses related to the relationship between work-family conflict, self-efficacy and OCB. The findings confirmed that there is a significant negative relationship between work-family conflict and self-efficacy and there is no relationship between work-family conflict and OCB. Self-efficacy is proven to be a fully mediation variable in the relationship between work-family conflict and OCB. The results suggest that organisations should be aware of individual characteristics and work-family domain to foster participation and engagement in OCB. The findings of this study contribute to the literature especially on OCB and open new avenues for future research by providing new perspective on factors that influence individual behaviour and also the role of personal efficacy on those relationship. Keywords: Mediation analysis, Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB), self-efficacy, SmartPLS, work-family conflict. Cite as: Abdullah, M.
