Purpose The research on causes of economic performance has largely focused on economic factors. However, a simple focus on economic indicators cannot cause sustained equilibrium of economic performance. Social solidarity is of central importance in the fall or rise of a civilization. This study aims to analytically explore and empirically test the relationship of social capital with economic performance of the Muslim world using Islamic perspectives and an inclusive development approach. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a new index of “interpersonal safety and trust” to measure social capital. The empirical analysis is based on both cross-sectional and panel data methods of estimations. Findings The empirical findings of the study show that social capital is an important cause of economic performance in the Muslim world. The findings of the study are shown to be robust to different specifications, additional controls, econometric techniques and outliers. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is first study of its kindly that analytically explores and empirically tests the relationship of social solidarity with economic performance of the Muslim world using Islamic perspectives.

The article investigates the relationship of flows of various types (transport, cargo, information, financial, energy, legal and others) between themselves and elements in the delivery system of foreign trade cargo. A hierarchical scheme of points of interaction of various types of flows is proposed. It is note that optimization of flow control will create more favorable conditions for rhythmic work and coordination of transportation with other modes of transport, and a correctly calculate supply of goods to ports and border crossings will provide an opportunity for the economical use of rolling stock. The solution to this problem at a new level has become possible due to the widespread introduction of digital information technologies. A model of the topology of their interaction has been develop with the definition of an integral quality indicator of a particular route or delivery option. An algorithm for assessing the interdependence of various types of elements, flows, legal ties and the degree of complexity of the structure of the system for the delivery of foreign trade goods.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to see the role of advertising in the middle of sales-price relationship of two entrepreneur brands in India. Design/methodology/approach – Quarterly data on sales (in units), advertising (net of inflation) and price (net of inflation) have been compiled for two entrepreneur brands over a period 2007-2012. First, elasticity of price is estimated by regressing sales on price. Next, the response of price elasticity to advertising is captured using a semi-logarithmic regression model. Findings – Results reveal that price and sales are inversely related and advertising influences price elasticity negatively. Practical implications – Findings suggest that entrepreneurs/managers should allocate more funds to advertising and at the same time should charge a higher price point in order to increase revenue. Originality/value – By showing a new way of how to measure the effectiveness of advertising beyond traditional ones (inform, persuade or remind) of two entrepreneur brands this research definitely adds some value in the literature of marketing.

This chapter traces how the ripple-like effects of territorial fragmentation entirely reconfigured the relationship of Baltic Sea ports with one another and with their respective hinterlands. Whereas many localities across Europe declined as a consequence of the disruption of established trade networks, some, such as the Polish port of Gdynia, experienced an astonishing boom, and others, such as Kaunas and Danzig, were thoroughly transformed. Here one group’s loss was the other group’s gain. The chapter explores how liberals on the one hand and supporters of ‘statism’ on the other negotiated highly specific, state-centred national economies based on cooperative systems that worked almost exclusively through members of the titular nations. It argues that both the construction of Gdynia and the annexation of Klaipėda were crucial and successful components in strategies of what was deemed an ‘emancipation of foreign trade’.
