Drought stress, a major abiotic stress adversely effects crop growth and yield. Tepary bean was identified as one of the drought adapted legumes for arid and semi-arid regions. Drought responsive functional genes in tepary bean were identified through current investigation. The complementary DNAs (cDNAs) prepared from leaf messenger RNA (mRNA) of three genotypes ( #10, #15 and #20) were sequenced using 454, and 54,165 Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) were generated and functionally annotated.

The coagulation protease factor Xa induces cellular responses implicated in cardiovascular and inflammatory disease. Effector-cell protease receptor 1 (EPR-1) is a functionally characterized receptor of factor Xa, and the EPR-1complementary DNA (cDNA) was published. Remarkably, the cDNA encoding an inhibitor of apoptosis, survivin, is reportedly identical to that ofEPR-1 except for a few nucleotide differences and its orientation opposite to EPR-1. To isolate the EPR-1cDNA and gene, we surveyed gene databases for expressed sequence tags (ESTs) that could be derived from EPR-1. All ESTs with strong homology to EPR-1/survivin were derived from survivinand could not encode EPR-1. By polymerase chain reaction and Southern blot hybridization, EPR-1 was not detectable in the human or murine genome, but survivin was. Our data suggest that EPR-1 is either highly cell-specific or the published EPR-1 cDNA includes sequences from clones derived from survivin messenger RNA. The means by which factor Xa mediates its cellular effects requires further evaluation.

Tepary beans (Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray) are considered drought and heat tolerant, desirable characteristics for arid regions. Knowing the genetic distances among tepary lines can indicate both compatibility for intraspecific crosses and potential for Interspecific P. acutifolius × P. vulgaris hybrids. Fifteen tepary lines, including cultivars and landraces, were compared to two pinto bean varieties using random amplified polymorphic DNA's (RAPDs). At the present time polymorphisms have been clearly identified between wild and cultivated teparies and the pinto bean. An ammo acid profile is also being determined using HPLC. More work needs to be completed before relationships among cultivated teparies can be established.

Trenched beds covered with plastic mulch was used to capture and retain precipitation for dryland cantaloupe production. Two trenches were formed in the fall in raised beds. Plastic mulch was laid over the beds and slitted at ca. 1 meter intervals over the trenches. Soil was placed over the slits, conforming the plastic to the shape of the trenches and channeling precipitation into the beds. Cantaloupes were seeded in the spring and grown with no supplemental irrigation. Planting moisture was significantly greater under the capture system than in unmulched beds. Seedling emergence time was reduced from 18 to 6 days and vine growth in the first 6 weeks was almost doubled. Total and marketable yields were doubled and fruit size significantly increased when water was limiting. Elevated soil temperatures under the mulch enhanced plant growth and yield even when moisture was not limiting. Combining a moisture capture system with supplemental irrigation could allow commercial production of cucurbit crops under limited water conditions in semi-arid areas.

The adverse effects of abiotic stresses have always restricted oilseed crop production, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. On the other side, global climate change has led us to adapt planting dates and select tolerant cultivars to encounter the new climatic conditions. To evaluate the effect of late-season drought stress under different planting dates on rapeseed cultivars, an experiment was conducted as a factorial split-plot based on randomized complete block design in Karaj region- Iran, during 2015-2017. Planting date and irrigation treatments were considered in the main plots as factorial and cultivars were placed in subplots. Two planting dates were regular date (October 7) (PD1) and late planting date (November 6) (PD2). Irrigation was also carried out at two levels of normal irrigation (NI) and irrigation interruption from flowering stage onwards (II). Experimental cultivars included ES Hydromel, ES Alonso, ES Darko, ES Lauren, and Ahmadi. According to the results, late-season drought stress and delayed planting date reduced leaf relative water content (LRWC), total chlorophyll content (TCC), proline (LPC), and grain yield (GY), and increased stomatal resistance (SR), canopy temperature (CT), and leaf soluble carbohydrates (CLS) in rapeseed cultivars. The highest grain yield (4505.6 kg ha-1) was obtained in NI conditions and PD1. Significant interactions of planting date, irrigation, and cultivar on LRWC, SR, and CLS traits indicated that the ES Hydromel was the most tolerant hybrid cultivar with the highest LRWC and the lowest SR and CLS levels compared to other ones in unfavorable conditions of late-season drought stress and delayed planting. To confirm these results, cluster analysis led to the formation of two clusters, where ES Darko, Ahmadi, and ES Lauren cultivars were placed in the sensitive cluster and ES Hydromel and ES Alonso cultivars were assigned to the tolerant cluster. Therefore, ES Hydromel can be introduced as a superior cultivar to be selected as a genotype that presents acceptable resistance under drought stress and late sowing in arid and semi-arid regions.
