This chapter surveys various technologies involved in a Web search engine with an emphasis on performance analysis issues. The aspects of a general-purpose search engine covered in this survey include system architectures, information retrieval theories as the basis of Web search, indexing and ranking of Web documents, relevance feedback and machine learning, personalization, and performance measurements. The objectives of the chapter are to review the theories and technologies pertaining to Web search, and help us understand how Web search engines work and how to use the search engines more effectively and efficiently.

Geothermal energy is considered a comparatively abundant renewable energy resource. The geothermal power generation system has negligible environmental impact (approximately 0.015kg-CO2/kWh), and it is expected to help prevent carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. On the other hand, in our institute, we have developed general purpose software (EnergyWin™) to analyze the thermal efficiencies of power generation systems easily and rapidly. Such software can not only analyze the plant performance but also investigate the effect of the performance-deteriorated equipment or air condition change on power output quantitatively. Using this software, we have developed a new plant performance analysis system based on actual operation data for geothermal power plants. Then, applying the system to existing facilities, we have analyzed the plant performance and evaluated the effectiveness of the plant maintenance strategy during periodic inspection for consistency.

The hydrodynamic design optimization and performance analysis of a mixed-flow waterjet pump have been achieved using the validated commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The detailed flow field in the waterjet pump is investigated by the CFD code adopted in the present study. Predicted characteristic curves, including the cavitation performance, agree very well with the test data for a designed mixed-flow waterjet pump over the entire operating conditions. A hydraulically detailed performance analysis with a net positive suction head can be used efficiently as a tool for the practical design optimization and assist in the understanding of the operational characteristics of general purpose mixed-flow pumps.

Distributed computer simulation systems use a general-purpose architecture known as HLA (High Level Architecture). HLA aims to provide common architecture for all types of distributed modeling and simulations by providing interoperability and reusability among simulations. A middleware known as RTI (Run Time Infrastructure) provides distributed simulation services under HLA. RTI offers a communication framework which is necessary for federates to interact during simulation process. Many RTI implementations are available commercially and are open source to achieve reusability and interoperability by implementing HLA. However, functionality and performance of RTI is based on its structure. This review presents the performance analysis of multiple RTI implementations, so that the best suitable RTI can be selected for a given simulation scenario and provides the structural comparison of central and service distributed RTI. It also presents the performance analysis of multiple RTI implementations and provides the structural comparison of CeRTI (Central Run Time Infrastructure) and SDRTI (Service Distributed Run Time Infrastructure). Many simulations use HLA, and RTI as basic part of these simulations. This comparative study describes characteristics of different RTIs, their comparisons and implementations that will help the reader to select suitable RTI according to environment and requirements.
