The multi-agent system paradigm introduces a number of new design/development issues when compared with more traditional approaches to software development and calls for the adoption of new software engineering abstractions. To this end, in this chapter, we elaborate on the potential of analyzing and architecting complex multi-agent systems in terms of computational organizations. Specifically, we identify the appropriate organizational abstractions that are central to the analysis and design of such systems, discuss their role and importance, and show how such abstractions are exploited in the context of the Gaia methodology for multi-agent systems development.

The features of the design, development and functioning of the multi-agent system Navigation are investigated. System architecture and substantiate the choice of language implementation of the system are provided. The functionality of the subsystems of multi-agent systems Navigation is analyzed in detail. The results of multi-agent modelling of pursuit/escape processes by means of the multi-agent system in different modes of its functioning are compared on meaningful example.

The last ten years have seen a marked increase of interest in agent-oriented technology, in several areas of computer science, including both software engineering and artificial intelligence. Agents are being used, and touted, for applications as diverse as personalised information management, electronic commerce, interface design, computer games, and management of complex commercial and industrial processes. Several deployed systems already use agent technology, and many more commercial and industrial applications are in development.
