The present research activity aims at studying different conditions for the circumferential friction stir welding of cylindrical components in aluminium alloy. Different parameters have been considered, such as the rotational velocity of the tool, the tangential velocity of the cylindrical elements and the number of welding passes. The obtained data have been analysed and the strength of each joint modelled. It has been observed a relevant effect of the combination between the rotational velocity of the tool and the tangential velocity of the cylindrical components on the strength of the joint.

Friction Stir Welding, abbreviated FSW is a new and innovative welding process. This welding process is increasingly required, more than traditional arc welding, in industrial environment such us: aeronautics, shipbuilding, aerospace, automotive, railways, general fabrication, nuclear, military, robotics and computers. FSW, more than traditional arc welding, have a lot of advantages, such us the following: it uses a non-consumable tool, realise the welding process without melting the workpiece material, can be realised in all positions (no weld pool), results of good mechanical properties, can use dissimilar materials and have a low environmental impact. This paper presents the results of experimental investigation of friction stir welding joints to three dissimilar aluminium alloy AA2024, AA6061 and AA7075. For experimenting the value of the input process parameters, the rotation speed and advancing speed were kept the same and the position of plates was variable. The exit date recorded in the time of process and after this, will be compared between them and the influence of position of plate will be identified on the welding seams properties and the best position of plates for this process parameters and materials.

Microstructural characterization and temperature analysis have been performed in friction stir welding (FSW) of A383 and 5052 dissimilar aluminum alloys. Marked difference in microstructure was observed between joints with different arrangements of materials. The temperature at four points on each side of the joint line was measured during FSW in various conditions. In addition, an analytical model assumed that the work generated by the rotation of the tool led to the work for stirring materials and heat generation of the material and the tool. The temperature of the retreating side (RS) for the joint of the advancing side (AS):A383/RS:5052 was about 50K higher than that of AS, while the temperatures of AS and RS for the joint of AS:5052/RS:A383 were almost the same. The experimental temperature could be calculated reasonably by using the model with assumption of the work for stirring the material.
