While linked data has been on the horizon for librarians, archivists, and other curators of cultural memory nearly since it was first expounded fifteen years ago, for many it has remained an abstraction.1 Jones and Seikel present six contributions by those engaged in implementing linked data projects across the cultural heritage landscape, seeking to bridge the gap between the idea of linked data and concrete applications that can be adopted at a local level. The focus is not on the technology of linked data, though each of the chapters discuss some technical issues relevant to the projects, but rather on how the technology can overcome the limits of earlier cultural metadata encoding systems (e.g., MARC) and what new challenges and opportunities it presents. By presenting studies of real-world implementations of linked data, this volume effectively communicates the progress made and a sense of what the technology could do for a local collection.

Andean weavings show patterns with intersecting warps in the textile's top view. These cannot be represented as a rectangular grid-like structure (rectilinear weave). A systematic description is essential for enabling weavers to document and secure intellectual property rights, and for preserving their rich cultural heritage. We present a linked data structure for modelling non-rectilinear as well as rectilinear weaving patterns, different from both a grid and a topological representation. We have implemented two editors using the same data structure for two classes of users (non-weaver users and weavers of warp-faced textiles). We describe the data structure and compare the operator sets of the two editors to access it. We give a first evaluation of the editors by showing how they can be used to model the complex structures of real-world textiles.

The reach and influence of social networks over modern society and its functioning have created new challenges and opportunities to prevent the misuse or tampering of such powerful tools of social interaction. Twitter, a social networking service that specializes in online news and information exchange involving billions of users world-wide, has been infested by bots for several years. In this paper, we analyze both public and private databases from the literature of bot detection on Twitter. We summarize their advantages, disadvantages, and differences, recommending which is more suitable to work with depending on the necessities of the researcher. From this analysis, we present five distinct behaviors in automated accounts exhibited across all the bot datasets analyzed from these databases. We measure their level of presence in each dataset using a radar chart for visual comparison. Finally, we identify four challenges that researchers of bot detection on Twitter have to face when using these databases from the literature.
