This work analyses changes in the content of nutrient components and trace metals and metalloids at three tributaries of the Maritsa River flowing in Southern Bulgaria with catchments affected by mining and agricultural activities. Input data includes information about 14 chemical water quality parameters (N-NH 4 , N-NO 3 , N-NO 2 , N-tot, P-tot, P-PO 4 , Al, As, Fe, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) obtained from the Executive Environment Agency for the period 2015-2018. Two documented methods were used in this work to determine the pollution status of river waters-Heavy metal pollution index (HPI) and CCME Water Quality Index. The results based on the CCME WQI ranked water quality as "Poor" (WQI values range from 31.2 to 39.9). The HPI ratings achieve scores exceeding the critical pollution value of 100 for some of the metals (Al, Cu, Mn, and Zn), which indicates that water is seriously polluted concerning those variables. Therefore, it can be summarized that the river waters are not appropriate for safe drinking , agriculture, and household use because of significant nutrient and metalloids and trace metalscon-tamination.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of mitigation measures adopted in a scheme of EIA follow-up by examining their performance in reducing geo-environmental impacts in earthwork activities during the Rodoanel southern section construction in São Paulo, Brazil. This environment is fragile in terms of affected watersheds because the highway crosses two important reservoirs that supply most of the metropolitan water demand. Therefore, this research also aims at promoting water quality control. Design/methodology/approach – This study combines complementary sources as evidences in the literature and field checks, tests and monitoring. The methodology was supported by criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of mitigation measures in the case study approach. Findings – The EIA follow-up activities contributed to the maintenance of environmental conditions in the majority of the control points at the end of the construction phase. Water quality parameters were not statistically different before and during the construction of the highway. The choice and arrangement of mitigation measures were successful in ensuring water quality control by avoiding siltation. Practical implications – A robust scheme for designing and evaluating mitigation measures contributes to the improvement of their effectiveness and is pivotal to the success of the EIA follow-up. Originality/value – This case study serves as an example for extending EIA follow-up practice in special to the improvement of the design and evaluation of mitigation measures in similar contexts.

The study deals with twelve water quality parameters on twenty-four sampling locations in Kuntaur. Samples were collected from the both surface water and groundwater. Twelve parameters were: temperature, pH, conductivity, acidity, alkalinity, total dissolved solids, turbidity, iron, nitrite, nitrate, sulphate and phosphorus (orthophosphate). Nearly all the measured parameters fell within the standard reference of the various parameters. The standards were: National Environment Agency, NEA, (The Gambia), World Health Organization, WHO and European Union, EU, Standards.

This case study characterizes the drinking water quality by using the multivariate technique. The spatial variation of the physico-chemical and heavy metals parameters toxicity with the drinking water quality based on 28 water treatment plants in Selangor, Malaysia from 2009 to 2012 was evaluated. The objectives of this study are to analyze the physio-chemical activities and heavy metals activities in the collected drinking water samples from the treatment plants, and to detect the source of pollution for the most revealing parameters. The discriminant analysis (DA) and the principal component analysis (PCA) are the chemometric techniques used to investigate the spatial variation of the most significant physico-chemical and heavy metal parameters of the drinking water samples. The classification matrix accuracy for standard mode of DA, forward stepwise and backward stepwise for the physico-chemical and heavy metal parameters are excellent. PCA highlighted 13 significant parameters out of 18 physico-chemical water quality parameters and 14 significant parameters out of 16 heavy metal parameters. PCA was carried out to identify the origin and source of pollution of each water quality parameters. For that reason, this study proves that chemometric method is the principle way to explain the characteristic of the drinking water quality.

The main objective of the research is a complex assessment of the actual ecological status of Salgir River waters based on several methods: visual survey of the watercourse as well as studying spatial and temporal transformation of water quality and determining the degree of water pollution by means of an integral criterion –water pollution index (IES) and bioassay techniques carried on seeds of two test crops (cress salad and wheat), and also zoning a watercourse according to several criteria. The assessment found a tendency to increasing degradation of water quality due to the increase of the anthropogenic load (increase in water abstracted from the river). The typical pollutants in the Salgir river are petroleum products, phosphates, lead, copper, biological oxygen uptake (BOU5). Phosphate content is in the range of 5.5–27.5, lead – 3.06–6.67, copper –1.02–4.52 MPC. The most powerful source of pollution of the river is the treatment facilities of Simferopol. The results of this comprehensive study made it possible not only to reflect the real situation at the water facility, but also to highlight sections of the river where a set of measures aimed at reducing/preventing the consequences of anthropogenic impact should be carried out as a priority.
